Question re: awful foliage scent

I have a question for you (I only have one or two different salvias). I THINK what I planted from seed in June 2005 was Blue Bedder. This year it bloomed and I love the almost periwinkle colored blooms. The plant looks very healthy, but it (the foliage?) smells awful, like cat urine! Is this typical? Or could it possibly be that one of my kitties sprayed the plant when they were roaming around outside (and I never knew it?) >^..^Oh, another question....I assumed that it was a perennial because it never bloomed til this year, but read somewhere that it is an annual in my zone...anyone know? Thanks! Phyl
