Any kinds of "cylindrical" leaf Sansevieria grow well low light?

Glad I found this forum on GardenWeb.

I would like to choose a "cylindrical" leaf-type Sansevieria as a gift for someone who was admiring photos of various kinds.

Would you know if any of these can be happy in low light, like the more common snake-plants? My limited reading (and limited understanding) suggests these are desert-types that really want more and brighter light.

I believe that the marketing of Sansevieria isn't entirely truthful. While they will survive in low-light, they won't necessarily thrive (there is a difference between tolerating something and loving it).

The "common snake plant" that's heavily marketed as a low light plant, thrives in bright light/sun. The same goes for S. cylindrica.

Thanks Planto.

I know none of the possible locations there are brightly lit - and of course would prefer something that would grow (even slowly) or at least maintain it's form under those conditions.

Guess I assumed there might be an origin "hint" for particular Sans' dark tolerance - an open-to-the-desert-sky vs shaded-under-a-dense-tree-canopy sort of thing.

Stuart - it's kind of difficult to provide adequate light if the plant is tall unless you use very intense lighting like HPS or metal halide. These lights produce enough light that you can keep them at a distance from the plant and 'bathe' the plant in their light. The problem is, they're expensive, expensive to operate, give off a lot of heat, and are noisy. Photo intensity (brightness) diminishes by the square of the distance from the light source. This means that light measured 3 ft away from the bulb is only 1/9 as bright as it is at 1 ft. That's why it's hard to light a tall plant with CFLs or other types of lights. Usually, you'll end up with the top of the plant fairly well lit, and the lower part of the plant getting very little help. There is a saying, 'The right plant for the right spot ....' that is used frequently and carries a lot of weight with experienced gardeners. It's often used in praise when a plant is doing exceptionally well, or as a gentle reminder that the spot chosen for a particular plant is what is causing it to struggle. The right spot has a lot of influence on how well the plant does, and by that your degree of success. If you decide to try it, maybe one of those spring loaded light trees (someone help me out with what they're called?) with multiple CFL bulbs would be the ticket if you can find them. You might try the 'Growing Under Lights' forum. There have been a lot of advancements in using LED lighting that I'm not up on, and you may get some help there. I have 64 sq ft under fluorescent lights, but the bulbs are very close to the foliage. I cycle them on timers at very close to what Toni mentioned - 16 on/8 off. Sharara..Which directions do your windows face? Are they obstructed by neighboring buildings, trees, curtains or blinds? Don't judge your thumb or light by a Mini Rose. They are very very difficult, if not impossible thriving indoors. Most who buy them either, 1. toss after flowering or 2. plant in their garden, if hardy. So, you're looking for a plant that has color? Other than green? Are you searching for tropicals or will succulents do? Or does it not matter? There are several ways to increase humidity..First and best choice is to buy a humidifer. They're helpful to plants, people and pets. There are several types of humidifers on the market..Consoles and smaller, 2-3 gallon filter-less types. Walgreens and Walmart sell humidifers, and now that winter is over most are on sale. Costs begin at 14.99 up to 200.00 depending on the type. Or if you're into name brands. I'm not into brand names, my concern is whether or not it does the job. Misting and showering plants increase humidity. For those with a large number of plants, grouping together. Humidity trays work fine, especially with plants growing in containers under 10" diameters. You don't have to buy anything special other than a bag of stones/pebbles for these trays. I bought a bag of pebbles at Home Depot..40 or 50 lbs for 2.50. Since you won't be needing that much, HD sells smaller bags of stones, including decorative, different colors. Heck some dollar stores sell them. 1 bag is enough for one tray. I save all types of containers, from frozen dinners to cake pans. As long as they're strong and don't crack, they work. I even have family members and friends save usable trays..lol I prefer brighter colors like silver, but any color works. Of course boiling water will humidify a house, but I doubt you'll want to boil water 8 hours per day. lol. What type of heat do you have? If you have space heaters or radiators, placing a pan of water on top works somewhat, but depending on the plant if it required a lot of humidity, a pan on the heater won't be enough. I have my Sans in glazed ceramic pots but like Inna mentioned with watering with those, I'm really careful how I water. What works for me is sticking a toothpick in the soil. If you pull it out and you see any soil stuck to the toothpick, it's still moist. Kind of like cooking brownies! Also, at what point the soil sticks to the toothpick is an indicator as to how far down the pot moisture is still present. That works for me, I usually wait until I don't see any soil appear on the stick (or in the case of one of my Sans whose pot is too deep to go all the way to the bottom of the pot with the toothpick, I just go as far as I can if if I even see a small glimpse of soil on the tip, I wait another week... you might have to wait longer than a week, it all depends on how deep your pot is... for me it's waiting another week because my pot is only about 5 inches deep) before watering again. Others may suggest methods of watering that works for them, perhaps they will be better or easier for you to do, but this works for me. Planto

I would wait 2 weeks & then fertilize with a half dose of a soluble 3:1:2 ratio fertilizer. I won't go into details about RATIO vs NPK %s now, because you've prolly run up on the information in your reading. You'll go a long way before you'll beat Foliage-Pro 9-3-6 (a 3:1:2 ratio) as your 'go to' fertilizer. I use it for almost every single plant I grow, and have, for at least 3 years now. A good second choice would be any of the other 3:1:2 ratio soluble fertilizers, like Miracle-Gro 24-8-16 0r 12-4-8. Several other manufacturers also make a 24-8-16 equal to Miracle-Gro. I like the Foliage-Pro 9-3-6 because unlike most soluble fertilizers, it also provides Ca & Mg in a favorable ratio. Another plus it offers is in the fact that it also provides most of its N in Nitrate form, which helps keep plants from stretching out in low light - helps to keep them bushy/stout/compact. I would screen or rinse the fines from the perlite & use a wick in the bottom of the container. just to be sure there isn't any perched water to speak of. The cool thing about the wick is it will also serve as a 'tell'. When the wick feels dry where it exits the pot, it's time to water. Don't worry about the confidence thing. That will come - especially since you have so many here willing to help you knock all the t's off the can'ts. Al

I understand. I can't say that I know the origins of any of the species of Sansevieria, but from my personal experiences, having them in bright light/sun, they are much happier and healthier.

I grew a handful of them last year in a location about five feet from the nearest window, no direct sunlight, barely anything indirect. They never really thrived and upon looking at their root systems, most of their roots were not healthy looking or dead. This year I've been growing one in the windowsill. Direct sun and very bright light (when it's not sunny for part of the year). I've never seen such plump, healthy roots and it hasn't stopped growing since I bought it a few months ago.

I also have a 'Pothos' that's receiving a good bit of direct sun (granted, I have my plants in a Southeast window that acts more like an East window... West or South would burn it). It has exploded and I've only had it for about three or four months. My Mother has the same cultivar of 'Pothos' and she's had it for about a year and a half now. It's about the same size as mine.

I'm sorry that it sounds like Sans may not be the right option for your friend. I hope you are able to find something for them that does well.

Some of the large flat leafed Sansevieria species are shady forest growing plants in nature, but these are not the plants you will find in a Home Depot.
Species with thickened leaves or terate (round in cross section) leaves are plants that grow in bright light/full sun.

The best plant I have found for low light is the ZZ plant but even then it will not have a nice upright form without some light, even if it's diffused or indirect light.

Those species of sansevieria grow in open sunny locations. They will survive in low light for quite some time, but certainly will not grow as they should In proper lighting.
