'Moonstone'

The incomparable 'Moonstone' taken this evening at dusk. There is just nothing approaching the perfection of this flower. However, in my garden, the bush has the most blackspot of any, even with spraying. It just puts out new leaves and blooms. I have to coddle the plant, but worth it. I intend to get a few more even. -Paul

Know what you mean about pampering this rose.Mine has BS really bad too and very few leaves on it,but 2 nice,but smaller blooms on it right now.Its my favorite rose out of the 100 or so that I have.Thanks for sharing yours.I never tire of seeing this rose.

I would be willing to trade leaves for any African varieties you might have. I’m newer to the hobby but I have many different ones I’ve obtained by purchasing online. Many are still small so not quite at the point to cut leaves on most but I could some of them. I would love to have more optimara AV’s if you have others. I have “my delight” and “margit/margit II,” and both of those are strong growers and flower beautifully. Optimara AV’s are very expensive online and I haven’t ordered any from the company directly so not sure how they’d be packaged or arriving at the price most are around $15 a piece that I want. Thanks

I've been growing Moonstone for quite a while. I like it a LOT. I think I might have a pure white sport of it. 1/2 of one of my bush's has been putting out pure white blooms all growing season. I'll mark that bush and see what it does next year. I know there is a pure white spot of Cagun Moon called Miss Kitty but I haven't seen any pure white sports of Moonstone.

I would guess that Optimara Little Pink Moonstone is a sport of an Opt. Little Moonstone which has a blue eye, not pink. In this case it is a plant on a right with round scalloped leaves, it is a mini and it grows in a more tight way. Kentucky is a semi-mini and has elongated leaves. The plant is more vigorous and has a loose growth habit. Both plants are excellent, and as any mini or semi - require to be repotted more often. I would prefer to keep true bloomers, not sports if space is of an issue.

I don't think much can be done at this point--but I'm no expert. I have used a granular insecticide on specific roses at times. You sprinkle it around the base of the plant and scratch it in. It's systemic, and it takes time for the rose to take the stuff up. I don't think it's very effective, though. It certainly doesn't seem to affect beneficials in my garden. They remain abundant. But my usage is very limited, mainly to four or so plants (the following ones). I also have certain roses that are always afflicted by bug infestations. For years and years, Evelyn has had eaten out buds each season, as does The Prince--lots of thrips on them, too. Other roses never have such problems or just light bug problems. I don't think it's the coloration at all. Does Moonstone have a nice scent? Sometimes that is an attractant. These pests will probably leave your garden soon. Your Flamingo Dancer is gorgeous. Diane

Oh my!!! They are so romantic looking with the deep pink in the center and the edge of pink on the petals. I can see why you love this rose!!

Is it cold hardy at all for you? It's a favorite of mine as well. Here it gets rust pretty bad

I've tried growing it in the ground, without much luck. Made it thru one winter, lost it the next. Now I have it in a pot as an own-root. I have about 30 - 40 roses in pots which I overwinter in my small barn. -Paul

Mine is a strong grower on its own roots.

It is currently ranked number 1 of the exhibition roses for winning the most rose shows. Exhibition roses, often don't make great garden roses. It would be one to keep in the back and just use it for cutting terrific bouquets...

Yes, exhibitors must love this one. A great attribute is that the flowers, besides being big and fat, open sloooooooooowly, keeping that perfect spiral center for a long time, even in extreme heat. I am beginning to appreciate that "slow-opening" quality that certain roses have. -Paul

I agree, this is a gorgeous rose. I've got one in a pot and another in the ground and fortunately neither of them have blackspot
