Moonstone devoured by bugs

I don’t spray, or at least I spray rarely and only use “organic” sprays like Captain Jack’s. Still, none of my roses here have problems like Moonstone’s.
Here’s another example:
Is it chili thrips? Because whatever it is, my other roses don’t seem affected.
This is Burling’s Flamingo Dancer. Love it! growing just the other side of the wall from Moonstone.

Comments (2)Rose slugs. Turn over the leaves and squint at the underside as you look for tiny, tiny green wormlike critters. Squish with your fingers -- or toss into the lawn if your stomach is quesy. Usually all one has to do is WAIT a couple weeks--for the good bugs to show up and gobble up the rose slugs, but they usually arrive before that much damage gets done. Have you been spraying the roses with insecticides in the past? They will kill off the good bugs also. If so, you may have to wait until next year for the good bugs to return. The manual method is the only way I know to keep them under control while you wait for the good bugs. Maybe some other posters will have some other suggestions. Good luck. Comments (15)What is the Rose Slugs life cycle and how many generations will there be in a year? Female sawflies (the adult life stage of rose slugs) lay individual eggs in slits along the margins of leaves. When the larvae hatch they begin feeding on the leaf. Once they are fully grown, they drop to the ground and pupate in cocoonlike chambers in the soil, then emerge as sawflies. Depending on the species, there can be one to many generations each year -- one for the European rose slug, at least two for the curled rose slug, and six for the bristly rose slug. ----------------------------------------------------------- I noticed some wasps and birds here trying to kill rose slugs but not to a great extent though... ----------------------------------------------------------- Last year I sprayed for rose slugs as they were really bad using safers insecticide soap and I tried Monterey Garden Insect Spray (Spinosad)... Comments (11)I just did a quick search - broom caterpillar -. There were a few hits, one recently in the Butterfly Garden forum had a nice picture of the bug. Other hits had some more advice on how to treat pest caterpillars. This site is great. I would search here, google if need more info to form a plan of action. Or not, I mostly just watch. Except for snails and slugs. They must die. Off topic but I moved an oak leaved hydrangea that was plagued with snail damage, now it has none. The slugs in that area don't know how yummy hydrangea leaves are? The shade in the new spot is better for the plant? Hope it survives its new nemesis, dogs chasing squirrels. Oh, I searched for leaf cutter bees, one article did say they can be a problem if they remove a lot of leaf area. Spraying doesn't work against them as they don't eat the leaves but use it for nesting material, must cover the affected plant. One poster wrote a bee kept putting leaves into her husband's gardening shirt pocket. Think I will have to sit out with my binoculars next spring to try to see one in action.
