Help! Horrible plant-devouring caterpillars on the loose!!

Okay, I'm a total newbie gardener and yesterday early evening I went out to admire my xeriscape garden, when I saw my yellow broom plant completely covered in hideous small yellow caterpillars - the plant is nearly brown and shredded of leaves and I think this all happened fairly quickly... I nuked the heck out of them with some bug-killer (for roses) that the previous owner had left in the shed -- haven't gone back out today yet to see the outcome. Last week I noticed severe round bites being taken out of the western redbud leaves, but didn't see any bugs or larvae on the leaves themselves -- could this be done by the same caterpillars? I want to spray everything with pyrethins this weekend but my work schedule is so tight it's nearly impossible to do any gardening during the week.

Anyway -- what the heck are these nasty creatures and how do I get rid of them? Help!
