Curious about different S. cylindrica type leaf growth patterns

Came to this forum the other day to ask a newbie question about Sansevieria; then started reading older posts (many with pictures), then elsewhere online, and now find myself intrigued by all the variations out there.

Curious about photos attributed as cylindrica or skyline or stuckyi - some look random, some fanned out like a hand with fingers spread, and some like a single line of pencils stuck into the container mix (example pics below).

Are the in-line "soldiers" separate, one leaf plants, arranged and maintained that way? Or are they coming from one plant with the common origin point obscured by the medium, and the leaves trained vertically? Or simply different varieties? Or something else?

I know - it's another Sans newbie question...

Thanks.
