All your great chili pepper pictures inspired me to try doing more with my photos that just looking at them on my computer screen. Thanks you all....I think. Hopefully, I've got most of the photo stuff figured out now.

Here's a photo of some Wenk's Yellow Hots Peppers in varying stages of ripeness. They were started by a high school horticulture class. When school let out for the summer they ended up in a garden I was tending. Several other varieties also landed there from various sources and are all growing very well, unlike the tomatoes which got hit with blight(I think) and all died in two days.

The chili peppers have captivated me with their beauty and variety. Unfortunately, I can't stand to eat more than tiny nibbles or small amounts in some cooking. I don't know how you can use any number of these, but obviously many of you do :) I've learned to wear gloves or else avoid touching eyes, etc. until my hands have been "decontaminated". Fortunately, that lesson wasn't toooo painful. I've given lots of peppers to people I know and to a couple food pantries. The pantries reported some clients were very surprised and happy to get fresh hot peppers.

Meanwhile I enjoy picking them and looking at them....is that pathetic?

If there were a filter for regional advice only I wouldn't use it. I enjoy hearing from people everywhere on a subject. No, of course, some of the information from CA or FL or TX isn't relevant to me but I still like knowing what their growing conditions and challenges, and their solutions to them, are in comparison to mine. It's how we learn new things about each other and roses. Many a warm climate grower has given me good advice on a variety of subjects. And during this past scorching hot drought of a summer I did use some of their tactics in keeping my roses hydrated. You never know when a piece of information you previously thought didn't pertain to you will come in handy! Knowledge of any kind is always a good thing! The wisdom to know what is usable for you and what isn't comes with time and experience. But if you never receive the knowledge in the first place you've already lost out. To all my warm climate rose friends, please feel free to give me your advice, help and answers on any of my posts! And I hope that you don't mind my sharing my cold climate experiences on yours. If so, my apologies in advance.

this is a very low maintenance bed. I cut back with a weed whacker in the fall. I mulch in the spring every other year. I might even weed in the spring, but I don't always get around to it. That's all. these are super tough plants they don't need coddling. Also they're so crowded there's not much room for weeds. (although there are weeds . . . .) I don't deadhead, no time for that. I wish I could afford a gardener!

I've made this suggestion in the past, but I still think it's a valid one (although not to me at this point in my life). When we are on the main page of the cooking forum, there is a link for related forums. I think if "kitchens" was considered related and you could navigate back and forth with the two forums, that would make life easier for many people. Many people migrate from "kitchens" to "cooking" and still go back to give advice once their new kitchen is done. Also, I think it would be helpful if a thread indicated if anybody posted to it since you last visited. I know the new email notification helps that now, but there may be a thread that I am following but haven't added my two cents yet; however I would still like to know others' contributions. On the Pinterest/FB issue, I am totally addicted to Pinterest. I use it for many things, including recipes. However, I use a completely different identity because I don't want to connect it to FB. None of my friends or family need to know I just copy others' ideas and I'm really not that creative ;) I have posted so much personal information on here at a very difficult time in my life. I knew it would always be out there for the world, but it wasn't something my friends/family could easily stumble upon, so I was a little more free with my thoughts. I think of the conversation side of this as a place to b*tch out my sister when I'm mad at her or just cry with my cyber friends. I don't want that to link up to FB. Those are some of the people I'm b*tching about or am mad at. ;)

You did an amazing job - I think most pool builders could learn a thing or two from what you have accomplished here. As someone who has plumbed hundreds of pools with similar configurations I just want to provide you with a little bit of insight into your underground plumbing chase. While it is clear that you took a ton of care to have a clean raceway to run the lines it, you made a few key errors that anyone looking to reproduce your results should avoid. In the areas where you have needed to raise one pipe over another you used double 45's to create a saddle. While this is the right choice from a system efficiency and friction loss standpoint, having underground 45's like that can be a problem. You will not be able to sufficiently compact under the saddle and as a result the top pipe will sink over time as the ground settles. Even a tiny movement of the pipe with rigid lines can cause a failure - and the 45 saddle is a weak point for a failure. As much as having back to back 90 fittings is bad, they are able to take the compression of ground movement better than an unsupported 45. Again, amazing job...just want to lend some experience. One more thing worth mentioning is that when you have a pipe penetration through the shell it can be a good idea to 90 down immediately. If the rigid pipe comes straight out, again it has to endure the force of the ground settling around it. By turning the pipe down with a 90 you do increase the friction losses in he system but relieve this leverage point which is a known failure point in swimming pool design. I look at my pepper pods every day to see how they are doing and see if any are ready to pick or not... they are just as enjoyable to look at as they are to eat, so you are only missing out on 50% by not eating them!!
Keep up the photos, Ill post some come harvest time too :)

Very nicely done! I like the corking on the serranos and jalapeÃ±os.

Start by eating the very tip of the blossom ends and slowly work your way up from there as you get more heat tolerant over the weeks. The tips of jals can be very sweet if you let ripen to full red. When I slice jals for powder making or sauce I eat nearly every tip.

when i first started growing peppers, i did it because i loved the plant and flowers of the plant, not because i was such a pepper fan and wanted the heat. i grew up in a family where the only thing spicy was when my dad would get drunk and start pouring tabasco sauce into moms spaghetti sauce. i don't know where he kept the bottle hid(tobasco, not pearl beer--that was obvious), but it always came out on saturday nights at said time. we ALWAYS had spaghetti on saturday night. anyway, after starting to grow peppers for the fun of it, i decided that if i was going to grow the darn things, i was going to at least try them. now after growing peppers for the last 5 years...i can take the heat, or at least much more than before. my wife, who used to be really wimpy about heat, is now saying about peppers she could and would not eat before, "that wasn't so hot, we need hotter?"
it just goes to show that you can build up your heat tolerance and will be glad you do. not only that, once you quit anticipating HOW ITS GUNNA BURN.....maybe then you will realize how each different type of pepper has its own unique flavor, and start enjoying peppers more and more. they really are yummy........PLUS, they are great for your health....go for it naturegirl and welcome to the yummy world of peppers---enough said----peas and peppers---bob
