Does anyone have Grande Dame rose?
Comments (39)My 2 yr. old, own root Grand Dame was not cane hardy this year, however, this was one of the worst winters we've had. She had black canes to the ground. I pruned her so severely (literally to the ground) that I wasn't expecting her to come back. It took awhile, but she's back, still small, but has buds and looks healthy - deep green, glossy, perfect foliage. I think with normal z5 winters, she will be fine. I will add that I usually lose hybrid teas to winter, but sometimes, you just gotta try. This is a rose I'm willing to pamper and coddle and do whatever it takes to make her happy. Carol, I've never seen a Grand Dame as perfectly shaped as yours. Desertgarden, those are magnificent blooms! Comments (12)If you look at the description of the rose in Edmunds catalog you will note that they mention the nodding blooms. It's just the nature of this rose to have large blooms and weak stems. Some might find a certain charm in that.....Lovely picture Mossy......Maryl Here is a link that might be useful: Edmunds-Grande Dame description...See MoreMy Grande Dame is not so grand
Comments (9)Jannike, I planted it in a very large and deep hole but couldn't amend the entire bed since other roses and plants were already in situ. I wish I'd known this before I put the first rose in the ground about 8 years ago, but it's too late now. Yes, my other roses are almost all putting out new growth, even Rhodologue Jules Gravereaux, which is in even more shade but already has several buds on it. Kingcobb, I bought this rose on January 12, but six roses that were own-root in 2-gallon pots that were purchased on January 29 are actively growing and had buds, most of which I've pinched off. However, it may just be that this rose is slower to develop or that it needs more sun than it has at present. Two of the roses that I bought on 1/29, Gruss an Aachen and Pink Gruss an Aachen are in an area of low light and both have already bloomed. I think I'll just adopt a wait-and-see attitude until we're closer to summer and this rose has a longer exposure to the sun. I might try a fish fertilizer solution and see if that helps it along....See MoreGrande Dame
Comments (31)Carol, I hope that you will get a chance to try it. I will get you a pic when it blooms this spring. This rose has been through alot and I am surprised that it is still alive. I planted it as a bareroot in late May when the weather was like mid 80F. Not a great start for it but it grew modestly and gave me a few blooms. Then it started leafing out early this spring and the foliage got zapped by the freeze. I thought it was a goner but four new basal breaks appeared in April and it is now showing 4 buds. I remember the blooms were very colorfast and unaffected by heat. I will have to see how it performs this year and compare it to its parent with respect to flower production, its repeat and get back to you with that info....See Morevabyvlue
