A quick question about hips/seeds

When trying to start a new plant from seeds, I always thought I would have to open the hip and take the seeds out. However I have also read that the hip itself can be planted? Could someone set me straight?

If you leave the seeds in the hip, there are germination inhibitors in the flesh of the hip that will delay germination until they decay through fungal/bacterial action. That will delay germination by months, or even a full year.

Remove and wash the seeds before sowing. Germination will occur in as little as three weeks, or as much as about 12 weeks, although four weeks is pretty average.

Thanks so much. Right now, they are in the fridge since last night. They were cut yesterday, plant is dormant here in zone 5. Do you think it's too early to get the seeds out?

Thanks for all the input - I have both Louise Odier and Bonica - but neither is very big yet - so perhaps they will make better hips as they get more estabished? I don't recall the Bonica hips being all that noticeable last year. I will definitely check out the Vintage website and look into some of the others mentioned. Ann, I mostly use a fungicide drench on my HTs (no fertilizer or insecticide included). I also spray some mancozeb in the spring when it's very rainy and damp out. However, with the shrub roses, so far I've done one drench in the spring before they leaf out, lime-sulfur in the winter, and let it go after that. The BS doesn't seem to bother them much. I'm in Maryville, just south of Knoxville. I actually have been lusting after Tuscany Superb and think I have a place to put it, if eastern exposure with afternoon shade is good for it, and if it isn't too disease prone. I have my shrub/polyantha/floribunda roses (all unidentified except Bonica) on a south-facing slope in a ring around a flowering cherry. Trying to keep them out far enough that shade won't become an issue. I have space for a couple more shrubs that don't get too big there. Plus I have 4 of one type that doesn't excite me me, so I could replace some or all of them. I would love to have some fall color and winter itnerest in that area. Most of my roses were inherited with the house, and I've been learning over the past three years. Aside from the fungicide, I put on slow-release rose food in the spring and a couple applications of epsom salts during the growing season. Plus I'll water them with compost tea or seaweed when I'm doing other plants and the mood strikes. I don't have enough of them to be much of a burden right now, as far as the spraying and fertilizing goes, but I don't want to add too many more that aren't low maintenance.

Dumb Question about rose seed

The rose hip needs to be opened up to the "seeds" that are inside... in my expirience they do best when planted fresh before it gets really cold, on top of the dirt, and for some reason they crack open and grow during that time. Which is weird since the parent plant is asleep but the seeds are alive and growing in the bitter cold (20-30 here in California). Hope this helps???

Many people on this list use more than one year old seed. I have seen posts claiming 7+ year seed germination. I think someone posted a while back that they found a partial packet of pepper seeds in a drawer that were at least that old an they germinated fine. The key is to make sure they are good and dry before storing them. They are commonly stored in small envelopes at room temp. Some refrigerate them. But I think the biggest issue is ensuring they stay dry or you might experience a mold problem or them may try to germinate while in storage. I have used two year old seed with no problems at all but I have only been growing peppers for a few years. I started out storing mine in small envelopes but now I store mine in capped test tubes with a small pack of desiccant to control moisture. I then keep them in the dark at room temp or slightly cooler temps. I am sure others will be able to provide their experiences as well. But you should be able to store seed for several years with little effort. Bruce

Eyes of the wolf I would not like to see you go through what many of us did in our early years of growing tomatoes that is why I would not use soil for seedlings - fungus like that causing damping off and many other diseases fusarium etc are in soil - a good seed starting mix is the way to go even when you pot up you shouldn't use soil not even jiffy soil unless you want to take the risk of losing your seedlings - when they go into the ground they already have a rooting system established particularly if you use a mix like pro-mix pgx plug grade starting mix for plug trays and pro-mix bx for potting up - you can use the biofungacide version of both and add mychorrizae ie plant success - how many plants are we talking about ? There are several good seed starting and potting up mixes from not that expensive to moderste plus like I use Just hold off and wait to see how many people advise against SOIL Dennis

If you plan on planting them in the next few months, I would shell them, remove them from the hips, and clean them well with something like Comet or Ajax to remove the remaining flesh and any bacteria and fungi. I take a small wire strainer, mix up a paste of the cleanser then, using my finger, I rub them around in the cleanser paste in the strainer as the wire sits in the bottom of a small bowl or on a plate. You can rinse the paste off under the faucet and let them air dry on a paper towel. Dampen a paper towel, I mean DAMP, not drippy, fold it, place the seeds on it in a zip lock bag, press out the excess air, label the bag and put it in your refrigerator. You may have a few germinate in the bag. Those you may plant as they sprout.

Once you're ready, carefully remove them from the baggie and plant as usual. You can find good instructions several places, but the Rose Hybridizers Association has several articles and threads about stratifying (holding seeds in both cold and warm storage) at the link below. Kim

What class of rose have you collected seed from? Seeds of Hybrid Tea/Floribubnda types generally do not survive exposure to temps much below 10F, if that. Your zone 5 listing makes me wonder whether the seeds you have gathered are going to be viable at all, considering how much freezing they have likely been exposed to by now. Just something to think about before you spend any effort in prepping a lot of seeds.

Thanks very much, I was actually worried about somehow hanging onto my roses because I had to move so I was thinking about trying seeds, but in the end I just dug all of them up and moved them. So far everyone is surviving. Thank you for your help, and sorry it took me so long to thank you, between moving and computer issues, I haven't been able to get on!

I'm glad you dug them up and moved them. Saving seeds from them would not have given you the roses you had. Each seed germinates with a new mix of genes to become its own new variety. If they were self pollinated there's a good chance they would have been similar but just a little different and could have been quite different too. Growing roses from seed is a lot of fun though and you should still give it a try!
