David Austin English Roses Extravanganza part 1

The first flush of blooming austins has finished, and i've only yet to begun sorting through the photos of them.

Here's what I've got so far, hope everyone enjoys!

I still don't see much of this Austin, a fairly new one, it's got the most lovely blooms

Carding Mill, in its 2nd year

Generous Gardener from Chamblees, small plant, struggling to survive. Didn't have the heart to pinch off it's little blooms

Saw a bunch of austins at costco this year, decided to pick up the Abe Darby and Golden Celebration combo

Jude the Obscure doing much better after competing plants around its roots were cleared out

Sweet Juliet needs a trim

The ever charming Katheryn Morely

In the latest French catalogue from Austin, there are three cultivars listed as Alba Hybrids: The Alexandra Rose and Scarborough Fair (as already mentioned by Jeri and Geodave) and also Windflower (more specifically referred to as "Austin's Windflower" for whatever reason). Curiously on the website, it is mentioned that Corvedale belongs in this group but in my catalogue it is included under Old Rose Hybrids, and does not appear to have any Alba at all in its lineage. Cordelia is also described as being "closely related to the old Alba Roses". There may well be others. Apart from the question of classification, I find the semi-double, loose-petalled bloom form to be particularly charming . MayBee

I've grown ALOT of the Romanticas & Generosas since 2000 and the only ones I have left are Eden and Guy de Maupassant. Eden is breathtakingly beautiful, has very long lasting blossoms but a stingy bloomer and basically scentless. English roses have done better for me but alot of them have been shovel pruned too. For those looking for some hardier English roses...I'm in a rural low spot so might as well be Z4 but the following Austins have hung in there and done well for me: Constance Spry (a must have!) Cressida (incredible unique fragrance/might be out of commerce) St. Cecilia (planted next to the house) Geoff Hamilton (planted next to the house) Heritage Leander James Galway Wm. Shakespeare 2000 Note most of these are old Austins. Not sure what that means.

All the plants have buds and Munstead Wood is the first to bloom-- 9 flowers have opened and 9 more developing. I gave them water and nothing else for weeks, then as they started getting bigger, sprinklings of bloodmeal and half-doses of fish emulsion. At some point I tried giving them a bit of diluted potassium with indeterminate results. (Maybe because I got muriate of potash instead of the potassium chloride, sulfide or whatever it is that's supposed to be better?) Once I gave them water left over from cooking beans (no salt) and they seemed to like it fine. Sorry I don't have any pictures of the whole plants yet, but they do seem like they are taking off. Though Munstead Wood, Lady of Shallot, and Jude the Obscure are growing with big open spaces between canes-- I don't know if these are the reported David Austin octopus arms, or pest damage to terminal shoots that would otherwise fill out the center of the bush, or particular growth habit in Houston, TX weather, or if it's just something it'll grow out of after a year and some pruning. The other, younger two plants that I've messed with the least, Lady Emma Hamilton and Brother Cadfael, have much more attractive foliage and look more bushy/shrubby. LEH has sixteen buds already and is nicely rounded, while BC, who has been growing tall thick canes and took the longest to leaf out and bud, looks more like a sturdy column shape. They are all at least two to three and a half feet off the soil level. So far the scent on MW is very sweet, like berry candy and rosewater (rather than dried rose petals), and seems stronger after a fish emulsion feeding. Can't wait for the others! Thanks to everyone for being present on this forum. I've been going through a lot of posts and learning a bunch!

I have a loamy clay here in zone 6. I have tried a number of Austins and I loved them, but I usually ended up with some kind of foliage issue. It's been awhile, so I don't remember what. I keep trying different roses that are thought to be good in a no spray garden and last spring I planted - Savannah and Beverly and Pope John Paul. Savannah is a Kordes - my first. It was enjoyable in it's first season. Pretty foliage and I liked the color and texture of the blooms. It didn't grow too much or produce many flowers, but I didn't expect a lot in it's first year starting off bare root from Palatine. But by the end of the season, it was suddenly showing some problem with one of the canes. Not insects, but disease. I left it alone and just hoped for the best this spring. This spring, it had some leaf buds on it, but they deteriorated as soon as they opened and while the other roses were pushing out more buds and then opening leaves, Savannah did nothing and looked worse. So I decided to cut all the canes back to the ground. And I thought that was the end of it really, but to my surprise, it sprouted new canes - about 3 of them. Right now it's about 6-8" tall and has leafed out and looks okay. Not a great start for a rose though. Beverly is another Kordes and last year it did fine and produced more flowers than Savannah and looked healthy. This year it has filled out with leaves. I usually have roses starting to open by June 1st, so, we'll see how it does this year. The foliage looked clean all season last year and so far this year too. Maybe by the end of this season I'll be able to make a better comparison.

Darn it, I knew I should have gotten Carding Mill.
I think Austin's are my favorites and yours are awesome. Thank you for the photos, they are great.

Ohhh, yummy- can't get enough of the Austins. I love the way some of the Austins seem to glow from inside like Carding Mill shows in your pix.

I recieved my rose mail order today. I wish I ordered Katheryn Morely instead of Sharifa asma. That KM looks stunning.

No, Jumbo Jimmy, you got a great rose! Although they are all great,I think Sharifa is superior repeat bloom and bloom form.

But Heavens to mergatroid, these are all so gorgeous, I would want them all.

Sometimes it pays to have a husband put limits on rose ordering. Otherwise, I would order 2 of every one of these, as they are deliciously beautiful but ordering would be maliciously detrimental to my marriage.

I agree, Sharifa Asma is an excellent rose, w/ the most delicious scent! mine was too weak to survive a bout of powdery mildew unfortunately. next time I'm ordering a 3 cane from DA

Beautiful roses and pictures. I have Golden Celebration and Graham Thomas and love them both. I wamt a pink one but there are sooo many pretty ones I just can't decide.

Violet - those shots were taken with a canon 30D (either cannon 50mm/1.4 or tamron 17-50/2.8 lens)

I also dug up my post from last year featuring some of the same flowers, surprisingly the images are still around, all taken with a canon G2.

Your photos are GLORIOUS! I'm putting an order for seven Austins together. I really love the myrrh scent, and I understand 'Carding Mill' carries it. How stong is the scent?

I agree with Nancy that some of the David Austin roses seem to glow from inside. And yours certainly do ... very nice.

hi Jeffrey, yes Carding Mill is definitely mostly myrrh. It's fairly strong once you get an inch or 2 away from the blooms, and every bloom will have the scent unlike some other austins.

The scent is fairly obvious without being too strong like Constance Spry.
