The other day on the Rose Parade, they mentioned that some of the HT's are grown in coconut coir. I know of a person who roots her cuttings in coconut coir and has great success.

Has anyone else had experience with this method?

I heard the same thing and have tried it now twice. Spring and Fall. Several hundred cuttings. My experience was not good. Not one rooted cutting. I was very disappointed after the first try so I did it twice just to see if it was a fluke on my part. But the second try was a total failure too. I'm trying to figure out what went wrong. So here is one vote for no it does not work well or in my case not at all.

I had excellent results with rooting in coco coir. I mix it with perlite partly because it is expensive partly because I found that if the medium is too wet,the cuttings rot. So far the nest rooting medium I have ever used.

Of course all wiring, power and signal sources and controls should be done while the walls are "open". Is your question which trade (electrician or home theater installer) should do the work? In my experience, the right trade to do the work depends on the complexity of your installation and the experience of the various trades. If you situation is simple, and you can describe what you want to the electrician, s/he can do it as a part of their other work. On the other hand, if you have a complex, mulit-room installation, I'd opt for the experienced home theater specialist. Good luck on your project.

Anne, I had a similar thing happen to me. My Dad was laid off from his job in my high school senior year. I told my parents I wanted an opal ring for graduation. Lo and behold, they got me an opal ring with a big beautiful opal and two small diamond accents. I loved that ring, and especially when I thought of my parents, with four kids, finding the money to buy me that ring. I wore it on special occasions only. I kept it in a separate box inside my jewelry box in my bedroom. I got married, moved 500 miles away from my parents and had two daughters. The only person who had access to my jewelry box was a babysitter who took care of my kids for six years. We fired her when she stole some items from my kitchen, a shot glass and some cookie cutters. Not expensive, but I was creeped out at her stealing from me. Several months later I looked in my jewelry box and the ring (and its' box) were gone. I looked all over, asked my kids if they had played with my jewelry, but no. The only person who had ever been in my house was that baby sitter. I still see her in the neighborhood. I wish I had some evidence, but it's too late now. I've been looking on Ebay to see if I can find a similar ring, but I can't. I'm afraid to tell my Mom the ring is gone (Dad died 10 years ago).

Here's something I'm learning about using coffee grounds -- a thin sprinkle disappears into the ground relatively quickly, an inch or two may form a crust at the surface when it's hot and dry, but more than two inches and the crust cracks and lets water and air through quickly. Have you ever seen the video of the new "water-absorbing" concrete pavement? That's what it looks like when I water with the hose over a thick layer of cracked-crust coffee grounds in Summer -- water goes straight down without even puddling. Whenever I read online articles or studies about using coffee grounds in the garden, they go as far as saying "apply thinly" because they must have observed the crust forming at the 1-2" mark. But I think it's odd that others didn't think to see what happens when they then add even more. Periodically, I dig back the layer of grounds I put down to see what's going on beneath the surface. It's teeming with life -- earthworms, especially, but also mycorrhizae. At this time of year, squirrels are also digging in it to bury their Winter caches. Of course, YMMV, but putting it down thickly is working for me here. :-) ~Christopher

I stand by my earlier complaint while also acknowledging what sleeperblues said. It is indeed a sad fact that for many people, when money gets tight, medical bills get pushed to the back of the line and frequently don't get paid at all. Unfortunately, those doctors still have a practice to run and employees they must pay, regardless of whether someone has paid their bill or not. I suppose I pine for "the old days" myself. For the majority of my adult life, we lived paycheck to paycheck. We could budget to pay you in installments but we just didn't have a lump sum to give you upfront to pay in advance. Hubby and I have managed, over the past 10 years, to work our way out of that lower class (paycheck to paycheck) predicament into a solidly middle class status. Before that, it was (largely) an honor system. We promised we would pay what we could, when we could, until the balance was paid; the doctors took us at our word AND we fulfilled our obligation. Unfortunately, too many have gamed the system for too long and now, an increasing number of doctors and facilities require full upfront payment. Luckily for me, I've established a rapport with my regular physicians and dentists and they KNOW I'm "good for it" and they allow me to get needed services and pay out over time if I need to. I worry for my children though. It has taken years of seeing the same practitioners before we reached a comfortable spot that I could get what I need and they know I won't shaft them. What will my kids do in 15 years if they are just starting out and can't afford 1000 upfront for, say a root canal and crown?

Title: Optimization of transpiration and potential growth rates of 'Kardinal' rose with respect to root-zone physical properties

Abstract: "Physical characteristics of two media were studied concerning water availability to roots, as reflected in specific transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and specific growth rate of very young leaflets of 'Kardinal' rose (RosaXhybrida L.), grafted on Rosa canina L. 'Natal Brier'. Plants were grown in UC mix (42% composted fir bark, 33% peat, and 25% sand (by volume)) or in coconut coir. Water release curves of the media were developed and hydraulic conductivities were calculated. Irrigation pulses were actuated according to predetermined media moisture tensions. Transpiration rate of plants was measured gravimetrically using load cells. Specific transpiration rate (STR) was calculated from these data and leaf area. STR and stomatal conductance were also determined using a steady-state porometer. Specific growth rate (RSG) of young leaflets was calculated from the difference between metabolic heat rate and respiration rate, which served as an indicator for growth potential. Low STR values found at tensions between 0 and 1.5 kPa in UC mix suggest this medium has insufficient free air space for proper root activity within this range. Above 2.3 kPa, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of UC mix was lower than that of coir, possibly lowering STR values of UC mix-grown plants. As a result of these two factors, STR of plants grown in coir was 20% to 30% higher than that of plants grown in UC mix. STR of coir-grown plants started to decline only at tensions around 4.5 kPa. Yield (number of flowers produced) by coir-grown plants was 19% higher than UC mix-grown plants. This study demonstrated the crucial role of reaching sufficient air-filled porosity in the medium shortly after irrigation. It also suggests that hydraulic conductivity is a more representative measure of water availability than tension."

Abstract: "Coconut coir dust, a waste product from coconut fiber processing, has been shown to be a good alternative to peat in growing media. Greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine if coconut coir dust can also suppress soilborne plant pathogens by using tomato damping-off caused by Phytophthora capsici, Phytophthora nicotianae, Pythium aphanidermatum, and Pythium ultimum as model pathosystems. Tomato seeds cv. 'Bonnie Best' were planted into noninfested and infested growing media contained in 5X5, 2.5-ml plastic plug trays. Growing media were infested with two-week-old cultures of the pathogens in V8 juice-peat medium at the rate of 1% (w/w). Stand counts were made when noninfested controls reached complete emergence. Populations of Phytophthora capsici, Phytophthora nicotianae, and Pythium aphanidermatum; and damping-off incidence were significantly reduced by 68-76% and 94-100% respectively in coconut coir dust compared to controls in peat. Results from Pythium ultimum were not conclusive. Autoclaving coconut coir dust had no effect on suppressiveness indicating that the nature of the suppressiveness is not biological."

Abstract: "Using several different ericaceous ornamental species, we compared the growth, mineral nutrition, and composition of plants in response to growing media amended with varying proportions of sphagnum moss peat (peat) or coir dust (coir). Plants were grown for 16 weeks in media consisting of 80% composted Douglas fir bark with 20% peat, 20% coir, or 10% peat and 10% coir. Sixteen weeks after planting, decreases in extractable P were larger in peat-amended medium than the coir-amended medium, while decreases in extractable NH4-N and NO3-N were larger in the coir-amended medium. In general, leaf and stem dry weight, the number of leaves and stems, and total stem length increased with increasing proportion of coir in the medium while root dry weight either increased (Kalmia latifolia), decreased (Rhododendron, Gaultheria), or was not influenced by increasing the proportion of coir in the medium. The composition of the growing medium also influenced aspects of plant marketability and quality including: leaf greenness (SPAD), plant form (e.g., number of leaves per length of stem), and partitioning of biomass (e.g., root to shoot ratio). Nutrient uptake and fertilizer use was significantly different between the media types. Depending on the cultivar, we found that the coir-amended medium resulted in higher uptake or availability of several nutrients than peat-amended medium. Uptake or availability of N, P, K, Ca, and S was enhanced for several cultivars, while uptake or availability of Mg, Fe, and B was similar between media types. Most cultivars/species growing in the coir-amended medium had higher production or accumulation of proteins and amino acids in stems than plants growing in peat-amended medium, while the production of proteins and amino acids in roots was lower in plants growing in coir-amended than in peat-amended medium. For the cultivars/species we tested, coir is a suitable media amendment for growing ericaceous plants and may have beneficial effects on plant quality."

Overall, coir mixed with perlite is the best rooting medium I've used.

Straight coir has worked best for me, with a greater number of fatter roots resulting.
