This rookie grew four this year. Keep in mind I started late, June, leading to poor plant size and harvest.

Mariachi and Sweet Banana... from seed, still waiting for them to ripen in the garage. Not much flavor green/yellow.
Carmen... from plant, one pod, but I did like it. Spose to be prolific???
Gypsy... from plant,didn't care for the taste, nothing. Then found out they need to be all red first.

Carmen, Sweet Banana and Mariachi are being over-wintered and will get another chance next year. I know I will be starting new seeds months earlier.

Ive grown carmen, gypsy, sweet banana, and super cayenne. im convinced that taste is NOT a criterium for judgement during AAS trials.

October17, The pole beans would be all of the greasy beans, any runner or half runner. There are also several that have pole in their name, making those pretty easy to spot. Bean, Big & Early White Greasy Bean, Blue Coco Bean, Brown Striped Greasy Bean, Brown Tobacco Worm Bean, Haricot Dolique Bean, Ideal Market Bean, Lazy Housewife Pole Bean, Maxibel Bean, Missouri Brown Bean, Mountaineer Half Runner Bean, Pencil Pod Bean, Rattlesnake Pole Bean, Riggins Stick Bean, Small White Greasy Bean, Spartan Runner Bean, Sunset Runner Bean, White Half Runner I think that is about all of the pole beans. What varieties of tomatoes do you have available? I looked at your trade list, but it doesnt have any tomatoes listed as being available.

Just a guess - 300-400 over 40+ years. Have my tried and true regulars each year but usually plant at least 20-25 varieties and an average of 100-150 plants each year so each year has room for several new (to me) varieties. why I grow so many different kinds Because we do a lot of canning and canned tomato products, in any form, taste best when made with mixed varieties. We also do a lot of our own taste tests so summer meals commonly feature a big plate of mixed variety slices. Even a BLT with 2 or 3 different varieties on it tastes better than the same sandwich with only 1 variety on it. ;) Dave

For the first year I am trying homemade self-watering eboxes, with about a half-dozen different varieties. All are doing well, starting to pick some fruit already. I am really impressed with this method of growing tomatoes. See the container gardening forum for instructions on how to build. I have tried quite a few different varieties in 15 gal pots with varying success. Even supply of water has been my biggest problem and the eboxes solve this problem completely. Of all the varieties I have tried in pots, Crimson Fancy has been the most reliable. Large fruited types have been the worst, but that may be attributed to my cool weather. Gary

Kimberly I think is very tasty and was one of my earliest this season, 105 days from seed. Stupice is almost the same, 110 days from seed, but I don't think quite as tasty but still very good for an early one. Moskvich is pretty good large but at 132 days from seed. But a Henderson's Pink Ponderosa, very seedy at 116 days is even better! So is Black Prince at 115 days, My overall winner. This is based on my taste preferences and earliness. Other notable early types, Uralskiy Rainny at 110days from seed I found to be tasty. Hope that helps a bit.

I have grown all the peppers on the list except the following 1937 PEPPER Windsor A V
1935 PEPPER Asgrow King V
1940 PEPPER Fordhook V
1938 PEPPER Rocky Ford V
1952 PEPPER Vinedale V

As for taste being part of the judging, it is one of the factors that the entries are judged on.
There have been several articles in various newspapers and gardening magazine since the aas was set detailing the basics about how varieties are tested and the methods used to judge prospective aas varieties.

It surprised me that I have grown many of these varieties over the years and still grow a few, although many have long been surpassed by more outstanding varieties with similar characteristics. For instance, Gypsy was one of the first thick fleshed peppers.

The point I think is worth noting is that taste is not that important a trait when you mention peppers, especially ornamentals. All ripe bells, no matter what their final color tend to have a similar sweet taste. The 2000 AAS selection Blushing Beauty is probably hardly ever allowed to fully ripen, at least on my plants, as it is most appealing at the immature stage.

Banana peppers are almost always selected for performance at the "Yellow" stage of color development because most consumers think... banana....yellow. I've eaten a number of red ripe bananas this year that I believe surpassed the red bells for flavor but since they become prone to many disorders to reach that all red stage I will keep that secret out of the marketplace.

There are many that believe that the AAS judging is biased. I often wonder how much consideration goes into the process. I've seen many selections of other vegetables that fell out of production after just a few years because the variety failed to repeat expectations. The glory of the process is that anyone can test these varieties for themselves and then draw their own conclusions. If taste is important to you then let that criteria decide your future choices.

I have grown Chilly Chili and Giant Marconi. I was not really impressed with Chilly Chili as individual ornamental; it may look better in mass planting.

Giant Marconi is one of my favorite sweet peppers. It produces well and fruits are huge, crisp and sweet.
