How much space for an elementary school garden?

My son's elementary school (K-6) is moving to a brand new location to be ready for attendance this fall.

Today I asked the new principal and school board for some land and water access to be put aside for a children's garden and have volunteered to head up the project and fundraising (gulp). They haven't said yes yet but I have a feeling they are going to ask me how much space I would need. ??

At my son's previous school (in Calif.) there was a woman who designed the beautiful children's garden but I can't remember how big it was.

It was designed in quadrants with:

1) a small seating area w/ fruit trees, berry vines and benches

2) a shed & two large potting/project tables (possibly green house if we can get one donated or raise funds)

3) raised garden boxes: one for each grade and one for charity

4) a butterfly perennial garden with worm/compost bins.

Or if anyone has a better idea for a children's garden, I'd love to hear.

Thanks...

Charlene
