Name That Rose!

Yellowish white/off white and light pink HT roses for ID

Hi,

Need help ID'ing these florist roses.

The first one is pale yellowish white (or off-white) while the second one is a pale pink. Both are slightly scented (tea) with the pink one having more scent than the white. Colors are accurate to the photo. Both roses have few/little thorns.

What are their names?

I believe that florists order cut roses by name, so you might want to ask your question where the roses were purchased.

Florists sell greenhouse-grown roses. Even if you can identify a variety, there is a good chance it will not look the same growing in a home garden as it does when grown inside a greenhouse under controlled conditions.

Many florist varieties have issues with disease resistance and have smaller blooms when grown outdoors.

If I were you, I would consult local rose experts and visit public rose gardens to find varieties of hybrid tea roses that have the look you want and thrive in your particular climate in the Phillipines.

Thanks petaloid. These roses were actually sold by a small sidewalk vendor who bought them from a friend who bought them from a florist who bought them from one of the cut flower farmers somewhere in Baguio City, Philippines. As you can see, the vendor herself or her friend or the florist or the contract farmers don't have any idea. She just calls them big 'pink'roses and big 'white' roses.

I would really appreciate an ID from others even just a guess as I like to know the names of the roses I buy. I buy these same roses for my vases 1 to 2 times a week so I would really like to know what their names are, having lived with them for years.

When I started this thread, I said I didn't have many whites. Well, now I have one more, and is she a beauty--but it is really hard to get a decent photo of her. There she sits in the garden looking pristine white, but put a camera in front of her, and a faint brown edge begins to appear--as though she suffered from thrips. I think these pics largely overcame that that problem, but shame on my camera for revealing a lady's blemishes! Memoire/Ice Cream--new rose, first two blooms on it. Can you see that irritating faint brown edging? And such a big, full beautiful bloom otherwise. Another view of Memoire/Ice Cream--shot at a longer range (so the faint brown edging won't be so apparent--hee, hee!) That's it for my whites. Anyone else have any? Kate

Thanks for these suggestions! One of my problems has been that there are simply so many roses that it's hard to narrow things down. Gemini seems a lot darker than my rose has ever gotten, so I don't think it's that one, but Moonstone seems possible. Sheer Bliss says it's a pink center with white outer while mine's the other way around... I think Moonstone's the closest so far, though I'm not completely convinced. And yeah, I've thought of trying to cut away the red one. The very first blooming I didn't realize it was there because of a sucker, I just couldn't figure out where there were two bushes... I'm new to rose-tending. And it was pretty. Knowing that now, I'm leery because of how incredibly thorny the cultivated one is and how intertwined they are. But I'm going to try. :)

Yeah, my Eden gets a bit of BS, but nothing it doesn't shake off fine here. I have him in really good sun now, because that also helped with the re-bloom. Mine looks so pretty right now! Last year he didn't even bloom because he got zapped so short by the polar vortex. I was afraid he might be Dr Huey. But no :) He's better than ever! I have Red Eden, too, and we're definitely humid here. Mine doesn't really ball, exactly, but his petals may need help opening. The thing is, the petals stay fresh and pretty, but he can just take forever to open. My Cinderella Fairytale and Cl Clotilde Soupert both have some real balling right now, where the petals turn icky in the ball shape, but my Red Eden just needed a little loosening with my fingers and he looks great :) I do believe he really balls in lots of places, no doubt. But for me, the freshness of the petals makes a huge difference here. I do love globular roses, though. He's about as globular as it gets, and that's part of his problem for some folks, I think! Without help opening, he can tend to look like a bunch of Christmas ornaments :D

Good Off-white/milk colored rose?

Polar Express has a pale lemon tint to the bud & the center of the opening flower here before it disappears into a uniform cream. The blooms easily lasted two weeks before dropping their many petals cleanly, even in high heat & humidity. Two new last year as gallon own roots from Chamblee's grew on into 5 gallons to plant out this Spring. Very nice medium perfume to the blooms & a lovely old-world look with canes that arch gently as they gain height. No troubles no spray & considerably shade tolerant with 2-3 hours of full sun in some of the spots I trialed them. Really wanted to bloom - kept pinching most buds & shoots for shaping, but got ahead of me several times. http://newflora.com/product/polar-express-rose/ Honeymoon showed a pale apricot blush in the hearts of the creamy blooms which gives them depth & is known as Vanilla in Europe. Palatine calls this an upright climber, and it may be when grafted or more mature, but the own roots that arrived last year have flexible & gracefully arching canes unsupported. Great health so far, grew well in pots from 18" to 5' & green to the tips this season in my warmer zone. The off-white could be Vendela. The pink could be anything, maybe Candy Bianca (or Bianca Candy).

Three sites that I like to look at for florist roses are California Pajarosa (their site shrinks the browser window, just expand it), Eufloria, and the grandaddy of them all OMNIFLORA (scroll down to see the list). But, not all of the florist varieties are named, there are so many of them.

The 2 most popular pink or white roses sold at florists in the USA are "Bridal Pink" and "Bridal White". Don't know about over seas though. There are so many florist rose coming from South America now that alot of the old standards have been replaced. That could possible be the case with your roses.
