Where to buy Autumn Purple Ash in Denver

My son & daughter-in-law are closing on a home in Brighton mid June and they'd like to buy an Autumn Purple Ash. Any recommendations on where to look? We are driving up from Phoenix to help move and would love to get them set up with one. Thanks.

We're having trouble with lilac ash borer and we expect emerald ash borer here within 10 years. There are a number of suitable replacements. Nonetheless, Timberline is the best closest, then next would be Paulino's.

You can also check with Cherry Creek Tree Farms or Picadilly Nursery in Brighton if you want to go local. Dave Rock (Jr.) and Lisa at Picadilly have been very helpful to me. Be sure to ask about the replacement policy. I had to purchase a starter amendment and fertilizer from Picadilly to get the warranty on 2 trees I purchased in April. I'm generally not a fan of that. However I have to say that these trees have started better than any I have planted on my own, so it's something to consider. I got such a good deal on the trees, less than half price, so I just did it. Dan's right about the borers. The nursery staff may be able to steer you towards something less disease prone and more hardy here. Good luck!

The first thing I'd investigate is drainage in the area where the tree was planted. Soaked soil plus high temperatures with direct sun can really stress plants, especially new transplants. Ash trees are susceptible to some fungal diseases and borers - more information here.

Ken - yes, I have been planting other trees on the assumption that sooner-or-later (likely sooner!) the ash will die - either from old age or EAB. DH insisted on treating it; I was prepared to let 'nature take its course'. What will be interesting to see is how much longer the ash survives after the green ashes succumb - they certainly seem to be going first! There is a reasonable-sized red oak in the backyard and two middle-aged white pines, so the loss of the ash won't totally remove the shade canopy, but it will certainly affect the scene, particularly in the fall, for a long time! The trees I've been planting so far are all smaller ornamental types as a substitute 'generational' tree needs to go roughly in the area where the ash is now so can't be planted until the ash dies. At that point I may reasses the design for the backyard as a whole so may not want another tree in that spot. We shall see.......

I'm no expert but I'd leave it alone. As long as the bark is intact without there being a break all the way around the trunk, they should be fine If I'm correct, the shallower cracks are a result of the tree trunk growing thicker. The soft wood should harden off and shouldn't compromise the tree. Keep an eye on them until they do. You don't want insect infestation or any weird growths of mold or fungus or something. I know the first instinct might be to wrap over the cracks to protect them, don't do that. The wraps tend to hold in moisture and provide a fort for insects.

I agree with bpgreen. I've heard that it takes a year per diameter of trunk to re-establish the roots. I can't recommend a local shop because I have purchased all of my trees from Harmony Gardens in Fort Collins - well worth the delivery charge IMO. I have purchased about 50 trees from them and never lost a single one. When I lived in Longmont, I bought 5' CO blue spruce - maybe 6 of them. Feeling like they were too small, I bought a few 8 footers. The 8' trees never really adapted before I moved. The 5' trees at least caught up, if not surpassed the big ones. The extra cost for the big ones was never realized. My current yard is 6 years old and have many maples (recommend Autumn Blaze) and a purple ash. They are finally taking off, planted 4 or 5 years ago. They were about 2.5" in diameter at planting and have at least doubled. I started with decent looking trees (had to be placed in the holes with a trolley) and deep root water them monthly - all year. In the spring, I pound those tree food spikes around the roots. I must say the neighbors ask why my trees are so much bigger then theirs, when our landscaping was done at the same time. Food and water!! I also prune religiously, to direct/improve the growth. It must be an OCD because I cannot look at most trees without imagining how they would look pruned!!

I just planted a Gymnocladus dioecious to replace the dying honey locust in the treelawn. In the back yard to replace the dead ash we are either going with Chinkapin oak, TX red oak, or bur oak in that preference order, my preference being TX red oak. We'd do Shumard oak if it was a tad warmer here.

There's a beautiful example of TX red oak near the little cafÃ© in DBG, which is stunning in the alpine rock gardens right now, and Panayoti did a really nice job with a new display of Colo ecosystems...
