Name That Rose!

ID & beginner help request

Hello! IÂm a beginning gardener with a very hardy bunch of bushes. They have probably not seen adequate care for several years. I am trying to get aquainted w/ general rose info Â but there is so much It would be a great help to know what I've got. Could anyone help identify from the attached pictures, or point me to a good source of very general, beginner info on old roses?

Facts:

Blooms are light pink aprox. 3" in diameter

I did see a little re-bloom last year, I think.

Foliage is medium green, 1.5 Â 2" leaves

Canes are arching, fast growing (or so it seems to me)

They are extremely thorny!

House is c. 1875 Â could be older.

Climate Â zone 5 southern NH, moist yard in full sun locations.

I have to confess my biggest fear is that someone will tell me these are the ÂweedÂ of the rose world & I should do away with them. I wouldnÂt have chosen roses, or pink, but they are here & they seem to belong.

Howdy,
You will be pleased to know that what you have is anything but a "weed of the rose world", but rather an Antique Rose (aka: Old Garden Rose) of value and great merit.

This is indeed a Moss variety, as you have skillfully noted. Unfortunately, what is less easy to determine is precisely which variety it is. A most important identifying feature is one that you are unsure of: whether it reblooms later in the season or not. That one feature alone will narrow down the possibilities. If it does not rebloom later in the year, then the possibilities are numerous. There are dozens of double pink Mosses, many of which are often collectively (and not always correctly) called "Old Pink Moss", or R. centifolia muscosa. What you have might be that rose, but it could easily be others. Judging by its shrub habit, I am expecting that you will find it is not a repeat bloomer. However, if it does rebloom, there are three most common varieties of reblooming Mosses. (Also known as "Mossy Remontants") They are: 'Rene d'Anjou', 'Salet', and 'Soupert et Notting'. All are double pinks with some late season rebloom. But as I say, judging by your specimen's growth habit, I expect this is one of the non-repeating OGR Mosses.

In either case, you have a worthwhile rose of historical value. Most of the Mosses were bred in the mid to late 1800's in Europe (ostensibly France) and were Victorian favorites. The ones we still find in our modern gardens are born survivors and likely the best of the lot. Most of them have very good disease resistance and most are Winter hardy and survive on relative neglect. Sounds like good qualities for a garden shrub, yes?

Thank you so much for the information and the link. I am so excited to have a jumping off place to learn about these roses! I will be keeping a close eye on how and when they bloom this year and reading when I get the chance. I see there's a forum here for antique roses, so that should be a good place to check in, also.
Again, thanks for taking the time to point me in the right direction.

The larger problem is the varying size of the plants. While all are buh types Pic n Pic is early and compact, The scallops are larger, but pretty well behaved. Black beauty is larger but tyical for a zuke, Ronde de Nice/Tonda di Nizza is twice the size of the the others and tends to sprawl.

Here is a second rambler, threaded through an eleagnus. Though its growing conditions are unfavorable, this rose remains cheerful at all times, though it has really grown vigorously this year with the spring rain. It has bright green foliage with evergreen tendencies, flowers are a bit pinker than in the photo, keeping most of their color through their life, with no fragrance to speak of; the rose has at times had a few fall blooms, doesn't get disease that I recall, doesn't form hips that I remember.

Yes, Jeff (regarding the ternstoemia). Me, too. It's one of the plants that I would like to see another picture of. Any chance of a couple of close-ups of #18 (Japanese Cleyera), ljbrandt? Same with #1. I've wondered about that one being a Helleri. Say....does anyone think that #1 might be Abelia? All of those long little stems.... Ljbrandt, I'm going to suggest that you leave the Crape myrtle alone. It was a very bad specimen to begin with; more like a nursery cull if you ask me. It 'might' have been salvageable as a teensy weensy youngster. However, though it is almost always suggested that crossing and rubbing branches be eliminated, I would hesitate to do so on this tree. What you'd be left with would be very awkward looking, indeed. To say nothing about how stressful the removal of that much mass is to the overall health of the tree. I'd like to see the upper branches of this tree. Have the original owners topped it (whacked it down) at any time? If not, it might not be bad looking, after all! Don't go crazy with your pruners! The worst thing you can do is whack things off before understanding how, when, and why...and IF something should be pruned. For now, go ahead and remove all of the growth coming from the bottom of that Ligustrum (#5). You want to maintain a trunk just like a pretty tree. Remove any stems that have died, too. A pair of sharp hand pruners for this job. Looks like about a 5 minute project. Same goes for that ornamental whatever-it-is. The pretty pink flowered tree you mistook for a dogwood on your photo album. ALL of those long stems coming from the base of the plant need to be removed. The wrap holding the stake to the main trunk MUST be removed. Poor little thing. That long line of Euonymus needs to be sheared. I hate what gas powered or electric shears do to plants, and would get a good pair of long handled shears to keep on hand. Good job on the grass! Keep us up to date on your progress! Before and after pictures are fun.
