What Kind of Rose is This? (Pics)

I just inherited my neighbors rosebush? which has been terribly neglected. I'd like to take care of it but first I need to know if it is a climber, shrub, hybrid tea or what?

The name of the rose would be 'icing on the cake'

Mostly, I just need to know what I have and some tips on how to take care of it. It looks kind of scraggly.

I've taken a couple of pics so you can see it. It has red roses growing in the centre and huge pink blooms but not many of them. Thank you.

'Dr. Huey'. Used by growers as a rootstock.

Thanks bboy. Should I be removing the red roses or just leave them. Is it a hybrid tea?

I came across your questions while examining my stats on my blog site. I appreciate whoever it was who visited being curious enough to explore my little realm of pain. The 6th picture down is definitely not the same as the first picture, although the species could - I suppose - be the same. But these were in different locations, so I would suggest different species. It is also one of the reasons I am not 'all that' at Rose names. I respect how many varieties there are far too much. I have enough on my plate at the best of times,....roses I love to look at, but that's as far as it goes. ;-) Typically, at that Rose Garden, they clump a few varieties of each together, making what ends up being a more effective and, probably healthier showing in general. If you want to move the several roses which are too close to your house, you can do that - just cut them back by at least half, if you haven't just done that. That is because when your transplant them, it will damage their roots, and while the roots recuperate, they will not be able to support much top growth. Try to dig up as much of the root ball as you can. After you have re-planted them, DO NOT feet them. Be sure and give them lots of water, because as I said their roots will be damaged. Then just let them alone - they may not look as if they are doing anything for a while. What they will really be doing is growing new roots under the ground where you cannot see them. When they start to put out new top growth you can feed them - follow the directions. Re the one that looks dead - I would just cut off all the dead canes and water it, and since it has green growth at the bottom already you could feed it too. Then WAIT for the new growth to grow and bloom. Then you will find out if you have the same rose you had last year, or if that one is dead and what you have is the rootstock growing up. Definitely put pictures on here of both kinds of roses when they bloom (blooms and full bush shots, and shots showing the leaves clearly), and someone will be able to identify them for you. Does Rosa virginiana produce hips worth using? Oh, and the York Rose, Rosa x alba semi-plena produces hips that could be used. Its white is tinged with peach-pink, so it looks more milky white than pure white, but it's lovely in bloom! Some people don't care for the colors of Rosa rugosa's later flowers against the color of the ripening hips. If you're sensitive to such things you'll have to consider whether you like the idea of scarlet/tomato red hips adorned with lavender-pink roses. If the idea of that color pair bothers you, go with Rosa rugosa alba. Then you'll have scarlet against pure white.

There are two culprits here -- 1) yes, sawfly larvae (aka rose slugs) are chewing the leaves, and will continue to munch them down until they leave the bare mid-vein, and 2) the round holes at the edges, looking like they were made with a hole-puncher, were done by leaf-cutter bees -- they don't eat the leaves, and tend to have just one period of activity when they cut foliage to line their nests. :-) ~Christopher

Do I have a choice on which rose to keep? The pink or the red? Should I cut it back?

From the look of your photos, especially the last one, it seems as if the original pink rose is being overtaken by rootstock suckers. All of those longer canes look like Dr. Huey to me. (Dr Huey is a once-blooming climbing rose that blooms on canes produced the previous year, so first year canes get very long and they don't terminate with a flower bud.) It may be too late, since the rootstock suckers have such a good head start, but there's no harm in trying to reverse Dr. Huey's onslaught.

Follow each cane to its base to see where it originates on the plant. If it is below the bud union (the swollen, knobby area where the pink rose canes come from) tear the cane off completely. If you cut them, it leaves behind tissue that will produce more new rootstock canes, and you don't want that. You can cut the rootstock suckers down a bit to make it easier to see the base of the plant, but don't rely on cutting to solve the problem.

I'm sorry that I can't help with the ID of your pink rose.

Okay, so you're saying get rid of dr. huey and keep the pink rose. So, does this mean that the pink rose was grafted onto the dr. huey rose?

What kind of rose would this be? A climber, hybrid tea?

Exactly!

Can't tell you what type of rose this is based on the info here. Once you get the good Dr. out of the picture and the rose has a chance to grow some more, you can post some photos of flowers, leaves, buds, etc., and maybe someone here will recognize it.
