RSVP Rose Detectives - What Kind Of Rose Is This?

I found a picture of roses that I am interested in knowing more about. However, the name of them is not mentioned with the picture (the writer preferred to not know their names).

So, if anyone wants to be Sherlock Holmes or Nancy Drew for me, here is how to get to the picture:

DO YOU THINK it's the same rose as the first picture on the page?

The third one may be perhaps Chihuly, which is sometimes striped and sometimes not. Or Cabana? Beth may know, she has so many striped ones.

Fun he's a inet buddy of Niles, who is cupshapedroses on the antique forum.

Probably the third pic is Oranges N Lemons. It has really dark foliage like that. Don't know if it's the same as depicted in the first picture. I doubt it.

The problem is that there are many bees and wasps that will use canes as homes for their babies. Plus there are other insects as well i.e. raspberry cane borers and others. It is not that bad for me since my winters tend to kill the canes anyway. There are more than 500 species of carpenter bees. So more than likely mine guys would not be the same as yours. In most cases the bee does not enter the canes as far as I know. It drills into the cane places a lump of food for the kids. Then deposits her eggs and seals the hole up. They love to use my phlox. At the beginning of October which is early for many. I cut them back then have to cut diagonally into cane till I find the bores. These are mostly the white wormlike ones. It is a pain for sure but it has to be killed or there will be even more of them. If I wait to long these types will enter the crown and eat all winter. My point is it would be all most impossible for us to find your culprit and you won't find the actual bee etc. in the cane. I have found them before by watching mommy bee continuing to return to the same plant. So I got up by the plant sat down on the ground and watched her work. That was interesting.

Henry, A dead rat looks realistic for the condition it is in, too. Many of the Earth-Kind roses are, and this is my OPINION only (please don't beat me over the head with a rose cane as Chris, from New Flora, likes to do when I express my opinion/personal experience), not very disease resistant, and certainly not in the least winter hardy in Portland, Maine. Any novice rose gardener would know about winter hardiness, especially in Portland, ME. Where is/was the local ARS Chapter/ Rose Club to help out? Who ever was in charge of the whole idea of devoting an entire public rose garden, capable of holding 600 roses, to a years long test of just 61 bushes (3 each of 21 Earth-Kind varieties), did not make a wise move. Test the E-K roses in a secluded spot, and plant annuals in the rose beds for the duration of the test. At least the public will have something beautiful to stroll through. The Karl Switzer Rose Circle, I am certain, used to be a magnificent sight. Now look at it, pitiful. I think it has fallen victim to one or all of the following: political correctness, green-earthers, decision by committee, or the creeping laziness many Americans are exhibiting more and more. Expecting even tough roses to thrive and flourish with no: dead heading, annual pruning, watering, fertilizing, etc., is a Utopian's dream, not reality. When you give little, get get little. I am approaching the Karl Switzer Rose Circle from the standpoint of a visitor to the garden today. I am willing to bet that 99 visitors out of 100 visitors to the garden would call it, "dismal," too. The one visitor who would have no negative comment to voice would be someone's Poodle, on a leash, of course. Moses

Thank you both. It’s doing very well where it is but it is hidden among others and I want to give it more room to spread. I bought it with a Mr. Lincoln and a mystery climbing roses and it’s the only one of the three that’s thriving after 3 years.

That's 'Dr. Huey' alright. If the temperatures rise suddenly during its bloom period, we often see much more cherry red hues than its usual dark maroon coloring. No amount of pruning or feeding or watering will coax it to rebloom. It's used in the industry as an understock variety to graft more desirable roses onto. That's why you see so many examples of this everywhere: the graft has died and the good doctor has taken over. Many growers consider it little better than an invasive weed, but if your Dad likes, it there's no reason to destroy it.

My question is about the roses in the 6th picture down the page. (As an aside, am also wondering if they are the same roses as in the first picture or not?)

It could be the same rose as the first one. Hard to tell for sure. Why don't you just leave a message there and inquire about it? If the writer doesn't know the names of the roses, maybe he can find out?

I came across your questions while examining my stats on my blog site. I appreciate whoever it was who visited being curious enough to explore my little realm of pain. The 6th picture down is definitely not the same as the first picture, although the species could - I suppose - be the same. But these were in different locations, so I would suggest different species. It is also one of the reasons I am not 'all that' at Rose names. I respect how many varieties there are far too much. I have enough on my plate at the best of times,....roses I love to look at, but that's as far as it goes. ;-) Typically, at that Rose Garden, they clump a few varieties of each together, making what ends up being a more effective and, probably healthier showing in general. I know they sure look good, lol.

Missmary, I was delighted you went there. More than, actually. In no way did I mind that or any other future pages you want to "borrow" for ID or any other reasons. It just means they might visit my site. I am more of a rhododendron fan than roses, the truth is. There are numerous rhodie pictures there as well. I like to try and make my site picture rich. Man, I hear you on the "at this time of year.........." thingy. Ugh.
