I wasn't sure what to call this thread, but my goal was to have a place to share photos of plants that you received from someone here on this forum, or plants that you grew from seed that you received from someone on this forum.

This first picture I posted on another thread, but this is Sedum kamtschaticum 'Variegatum' that came from Skybird.

This one, also from Skybird, is Delosperma kelaidis 'Mesa Verde', and then a close up of it

Another Delosperma from Skybird, this one is Delosperma basuticum 'White Nugget'. It was just a tiny cutting this time last year! (Ignore the date stamp on this one, it's the default date)

This Aquilegia chrysantha was wintersowed in '07 with seeds I received from ... you guessed it, Skybird, and this is it's first bloom!

And just so you don't think my whole garden came from Skybird, here is a clump of chives (yes I finally have chives!!!) from Charlene

Oh, and one more. This is lavender, which was wintersown this year, from seed from Skybird, though the tag said it could be Munstead or Hidcote, so I'm not sure which one it is, but I have two clumps of it. If you look at the top of the photo, you can see one of the parsley plants I got from Charlene at the Spring Swap.

I've got some daylillies and a yarrow that came from the swap last fall, that are getting ready to bloom, so I'll add those pics later. Several of my tomato and pepper plants came from seed I received from folks on this forum, but it will be a while before I have any vegetable "bling" to show.

This is my second year to WS them, and I did the regular kind, and the garlic chives. Neither one is up so far. Maybe someone can bring an established clump to the plant swap, if I don't get any germination. Most of the things I'm waiting on are perennials, with a few annuals that were just recently sown. Oh, and my wintersown tomatoes. I'm going to wait another week or two, then sow my zinnias and basils, and then I will be officially done wintersowing. Well, I just got caught up on the welcomes on the Whos Here thread, so let me do it here too! Hi Redrockgarden. Oh how I envy you living out in the foothills! Id love it out there! The end of last August I found a private cabin (built in the 30's by the CCC) out in Bailey on a year-round stream and spent a couple days out there. Nothing but pure peace and quiet! It was wonderful! Im not showing anybody real close to you thats checked in yet. The people on the far west side of Denver would probably be the closest. But, who knows, maybe some other Morrison people will find their way here. Meershaum, its nice to meet youeven if you arent too into flowersyet! But, hey, veggies are good too! Im into that too. And, well, veggies have flowers! But youre one of the ones who definitely has to go to the What Does Your Name Mean thread to tell uswhere did your name come from? When I first saw it, I wanted to ask, does a meershaum look anything like a meerkat? :-) So now, whenever I see it, I cant think of anything but meerkats! So maybe youd like to set the record straight on that one. And, chickwit (you MUST tell us where your name comes from too!), I bet youre glad we didnt get the snow yesterday so your tulips didnt get all smooshed down. It looks like there may be more coming on Monday or Tuesday, but if theyre right, the temps will be warm enough that itll be rain instead of snow. We can all use rain. Sorry to hear about the "ghastly development," but if you have 2 trees and 5 bushes, at least its a start for some great perennial beds! And, wow, if youre home all the time to be sure they stay watered, you can even start a lot of your perennials from seedgreat money-saver. Yeah, it takes them a while to grow up, but its a lot of fun to watch the little babies growing too. And, oddidahoian, I think you need to go to that other thread too, to tell us where the "odd" comes from! And, yes, you are definitely on the right forum. You have one other compadre up there in Idaho, digit/Steve, but hes up in the "chimney/panhandle." There are a lot of folks around here with a lot of answers for you, so dont be afraid to come ask as youre getting started in this great addiction. Welcome to each of you, and thank you all for checking in. Whew, presents opened, wrappings picked up, dinner over(shrimp, steak, potatoes, asparagus; it was good), and I'm embarrassed to say I'm already shopping the sales on the internet with my Christmas money. (Body butters at the body shop, good for windwhipped skin.) Paperwhites just fading, amarylis almost in full bloom, Christmas carols playing in the background and the tree didn't fall over this year! Now just waiting for the 40-mph wind to calm down and the snow to begin. All in all a lovely Christmas. Hope everyone's was just as good as ours. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Hi all, I'm back on the eastern side of the mountains again--after a wonderful three weeks on the "other" side! For any swap newbies, or anyone wondering about how something works, here's a copy of the Swap FAQs. Having just gotten back home I'm not at all sure what I'll have this time, but I'll come up with something! See you all Saturday! Skybird . ~~~~~ THE BASIC SWAP FAQ'S! ~~~~~ WHAT TO BRING! Anything that has anything to do with gardening is welcome at the swap! Plants, of course, are our primary "commodity," but people also sometimes bring fresh produce, like cut herbs, rhubarb, or other fresh spring veggies to include in the trading. The Spring Swap plants are usually mostly starts and seedlings of annual bedding plants and veggies, with some perennial divisions and seedlings. The Fall Swap is usually mostly perennial divisions! In addition to garden plants, we also welcome house plants, seeds, pots, books/magazines, tools, rocks, garden art.......... Anything garden related that you don't want or need anymore! . WHAT HAPPENS AT THE SWAP! The Arriving Part! When you arrive, there will be a table with a sign in sheet and name badges. Everybody needs to sign in and make a name badge for themselves and any significant others or guests. The Eating Part! We start out with the pot luck! Your dish can be absolutely anything! Hot dishes, cold dishes, appetizers/finger foods, salads, sweets--anything you think others would enjoy! Homemade dishes, if you have time, are always good and very much appreciated! Please plan to bring a serving spoon if it will be needed for your dish, and also please make some provision for it to be covered--a lid if it's that type of dish, or plastic wrap, or whatever. And a request I've made at the last couple swaps that has worked out pretty well! I love sweets, so I definitely don't want to put too much of a damper on the dessert type things, but at a couple of the early swaps we seemed to wind up with mostly sweets, so if you're trying to decide between that or something else, lean toward the something else! The Swapping Part! During the arriving/eating parts you will have had time to check out the plants people have brought, and now it's time for the swapping! First we make sure anybody who has plants earmarked for others, gets or has already gotten them to the right people. Then we draw numbers for the first TWO rounds of picking what we want. With number in hand, we go around and have everyone briefly describe what they brought so people know for sure what's there and so everyone can decide what they want the most! Then we go around twice in "number order" and each person picks the one thing they want the most in each round. This gives everyone a pretty good chance of getting the two things they really want! After the two "civilized" rounds of picking we open it up to a free-for-all! Everyone just goes around and grabs whatever they want of what's left! (Bring your Body Armor!) NOTE: At the last several swaps, after the first two rounds of picking we’ve been deciding as a group if we want to do more “rounds” of picking before we go to the free-for-all! About the Earmarking! On the day of the swap we don't allow any "early picking," meaning, while you can look and touch all you want, nobody can take any of the plants till we start our first two rounds of picking! BUT we do allow earmarking of plants BEFORE the swap when people post what they plan to bring. When people start posting what they plan to bring they'll say whether or not they'll be willing to earmark plants for people, and if they are, you can ask for dibs on them at that point! In the last couple years I and a couple other people have decided it's more fun to not do dibs--and less complicated, so this is sort of an evolving situation at this point and we'll just play it by ear! . OUR PRIMARY SWAP RULE! And then there's that one Swap Law that everybody needs to know about! Nobody needs to have any plants to be welcome at the swap! If you're new to gardening and don't have anything yet, if you just moved to a new house and don't have anything to give away yet, or if you just don't have anything for any reason at all, that's ok! There are always way, way plenty plants to go around, and we get together as much to swap gardening talk and friendship as to swap plants--so come regardless of how much you do or don't have to bring! (And, yes, you do get to pick plants in the swap part even if you weren't able to bring any!) . HERE'S SOME BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE PLANTS YOU BRING! PLANT THEM – Whether it's divisions or seedlings or whole plants you'll be bringing, please try to get them into their pots AT LEAST a couple weeks before the swap so they have time to "settle in" and start to root out some. If plants are dug up and put into pots, and then taken back out of the pots to be planted in the ground just a couple days later, it's "double trauma" for them! Also, most plants don't do at all well in pots in "garden soil," so if at all possible, use some sort of a store bought potting mix. It doesn't need to be expensive! (But Hyponex brand would probably be worse than garden soil, so if that's the option, stick with the garden soil!) LABEL THEM – Please be sure the plants you bring are labeled one way or another! Here are some of the ways people have labeled their plants in the past: a regular plant tag in the pot – plastic beverage cups cut up into narrow strips – popsicle sticks – old blinds cut up into label size strips – staple or tape a piece of paper with the name onto the pot – write the name of the plant on the pot with a marker or crayon – make up adhesive labels with the plant name and basic information and stick them on the pots. I make up little strips of paper on the computer with the name and other info and include one with each plant. Be creative, but find some way to label them! Anything to ensure the person getting the plant will know what they have when they get home. When we're at the swap, we all think we'll be able to remember the things we're getting to take home, and then we wind up grabbing all kinds of things in the free-for-all, and........... Oops! What is this! WATER THEM – Please plan to thoroughly water the plants you're bringing the DAY BEFORE the swap so they'll have time to drain well enough to be easy to transport, yet be wet enough to not be wilting at the swap or while people are taking them home! TAKE THEM HOME! – It's a really good idea to bring a box/tray or two to carry your booty back home in! If the plants you're bringing are in something, don't let anybody else snag it, and you can use that to refill with the new goodies! We do ask that you please don't use someone else's boxes or trays without asking first if it's ok! MARK YOUR EARMARKED PLANTS -- If you're earmarking something for someone who's requested it, please be sure to clearly mark on the pot somehow who it's for, to be sure it gets to the right person. I use small "pots" (styrofoam cups!) for my plants, and when I’ve earmarked plants in the past I found it worked well to write the screen name of the person on a paper bag and put the plants in the bag. If there was more than one bag for someone I just wrote "1 of 2" on it to be sure nothing got missed! That made it easy for everyone to find the ones that were for them, and it's easier to carry the bags than to carry a bunch of separate pots. Small boxes work well too! There will be an area away from the general swap plants to put things that are earmarked for specific people. . COMMUNICATION ABOUT THE SWAP! ALL swap information is posted here on the Rocky Mountain Gardening Forum! The ONLY email that will be sent directly to the people that are planning to attend the swap, will be one with the address and directions, approximately a week before the swap. [Guess this one is a moot point by now!]

Hey, I'm glad to see this thread pop up again. I've got a couple more to add:

Here is my 'Black Cherry' Tomato grown from Margaretmontana's seeds. I also had a couple extra plants that I gave to my neighbor down the street.

... and here is Achillea 'Paprika' from last fall's swap. I'm not sure who it was from though, but Skybird delivered it to me.

I've been waiting to post to this message for a while now. Bonnie, I have the same beautiful columbine from Skybird but mine is very unhappy because of vole damage and some kind of webbing insect. I have tons of other great plants from people here but they weren't cooperating and blooming when I had a camera handy. They have since reformed:

This is a perennial sweetpea stowaway that I got from the spring swap last year from bloomingamaryllis along with some gorgeous mountain bluet. I had been coveting mountain bluet and it reseeded itself last year and its offspring bloomed last month. I was warned that its a thug and it is indeed taking over the lawn a bit but I adore its cheerful abandon.

These are sedum mostly from Skybird and hens and chicks from an anonymous swapper. I thought the angelina sedum didnt survive the winter but here it is, small and happy. There is a type of sedum that I bought mixed in there and also a bit of irish moss but the rest is due to the generosity of rocky mountain garden swappers. Thank you Bonnie for a great post idea and thank you, fellow swappers, for all the great plants.

Azura, I love the little bird with the Hens & Chicks in it! Will you leave that out through the winter? I have been seeing a lot of shallow concrete planters with Hens & Chicks in them at the local nurseries, and was tempted to buy one, but I thought they would crack when the temps got below freezing.

Here is my first Daylily to bloom from Catladysgarden. It's 'Pardon Me'.

I also have 'Merle Kent' and 'Principal Wife', but they haven't started to bloom yet. I think I may need to move them to a sunnier spot.

The lavender I grew from Skybird's seeds is blooming now, and looks great next to my Agastache 'Apache Sunset'. I'll try and get a picture of that soon.

What a great idea Bonnie. Here are mine. All from the Fall swap unless noted.

Tall phlox from unknown swapper:

Variegated sedum (must be from Skybird):

Avilda daylily from Karen. I just love this one. I also got the "Pardon Me". It didn't bloom for me, but I'm looking forward to next year, as yours is so pretty Bonnie.

Hibiscus "Disco Belle". I got the seeds from Skybird, and they sprouted pretty well, but the plants are doing much. I'm guessing next year they will take off.

Malva Zebrina - seeds from Skybird. This is very cute. Germinated quite well. I will start more from seed next year.

Unknown sedum that I think came from the fall swap. It's one of those that seems to be popping up everywhere! Little yellow flowers.

Calendula "Sherbert Fizz". I think these seeds came from Bonnie.

I got some of the yellow columbine seeds from Skybird. Just baby plants this year - hopefully they will bloom next year.

Azura, I love your drift of flowers with the sweet pea. That's the look I want to have!

Bonnie, I love the Achillea "Paprika". What a pretty red!

And I thought I saw someone posting a picture of an Iris from an "unknown swapper". I brought iris to the fall swap and if that's one of mine, I'm jealous, because I dug up a ton of old iris and replanted some. Some bloomed this year, but not all, and I didn't see that color - which is very cool!

Alice, everything looks terrific! I especially like that daylily next to the dark red flower, the colour combo is awesome.

I think it is my iris that came from you! I grabbed the iris at the end of the fall swap and never expected it to bloom this year. I only had one stalk of flowers but they all looked so pretty and frilly. Ya know, it split a ton and I can always dig one up...

by the way, that unknown campanula next to my garden gnome is gone. It looked more like a thistle to me and I popped open one of the blooms and it was a thistle!! Must have blown in from the creek.

I haven't downloaded any pictures lately (haven't actually taken very many this year), so I don't have pics to post, but I've been wanting to take a minute to post, for Alice, that the unknown sedum with yellow flowers you have is Sedum acre. And, yes, it will root absolutely anywhere a piece falls. It's considered aggressive and invasive, so keep an eye on it!

And you're right about the Hibiscus! Next year you'll have flowers, and the following year you'll have a big plant. Remember it comes up very late in spring, so be sure you mark where it is and just wait for it.

And Bonnie, next year keep an eye out for the lavender seedlings you'll have coming up all over the place. Move them before they get very big if you want them somewhere else.

Here's one more!

Well, the plant is only about 12" tall, but I finally got a bloom. They were just tiny little sprouts when I planted them out, and I'm hoping it will grow to it's full size next year. It's Rudbeckia 'Irish Eyes' and I believe it came from Dafygardenut.

Wow Bonnie - that looks great! Mine stayed tiny little sprouts and have done nothing. I'm hoping roots are growing like crazy since the seedling leaves are still green and will do something next year.

Dafy, I divided the sprouts into two clumps, and my other one doesn't look like it will bloom this year either, but now that I've seen what they will look like, I'm really looking forward to next year's blooms.

I FINALLY got blooms on the Crocosmia 'Lucifer' that Skybird brought me last fall! The first bloom stalk it sent up, got completely eaten off by some critter, so I didn't think I would see blooms on it this year, but thankfully, it sent up another one. I LOVE IT! It is so elegant, and a nice true red color, though in this photo it looks more orange than it does in real life.

I was working in my garden last weekend, and lyric kept playing through my head. My wife and older daughter and I saw "Wicked" in NYC this summer. It's the "back story" of the Wizard of Oz -- a tremendous musical. Anyway, there's a song sung by the two "witches" (they were actually friends if you didn't know ), and it has a verse that goes like this:

Like a seed dropped by a skybird
In a distant wood
Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good

It's really a beautiful song and an emotional wrap up for the play. There's a link to all the verses below.

Anyway, doesn't that make you think about our Skybird? Looking at all these photos of plants that came from Skybird in everyone's gardens made me think of the connection. Thanks for being so good to everyone, Skybird!

You guys are gonna make me cry! But thank you for the kind words. I think gardening changes everybody for the better! I just wish I had more time to post these days. I always manage to read the posts, and thereÂs often something I want to say to respond, but when IÂm not too tired IÂm running around trying to get all kinds of stuff done before I leave again. Today IÂm running in and out all day trying to get everything watered well again before I leave for 3 more days tomorrow! And IÂm trying to get things ready for the swapÂand for my vacation, since IÂm leaving just three days after the swap. And I still have to iron a blouse for tomorrow, and make sandwiches to take with me tomorrow, etc, etc, etc...........

But IÂve been wanting to get back to this thread again to tell you, HighAlt, that the Crocosmia you showed in the picture must be the one that was left over from somebody elseÂdonÂt know whoÂafter last yearÂs swap. The one I brought for you was way too tiny to be that big this year! So somebody else gets credit for that oneÂbut itÂs sure lookinÂ good!

Steve, I havenÂt seen any SLC layovers lately, and donÂt even know if DEN has any right now, so maybe some day IÂll need to just hop on a plane and come out there and you can meet me at the airport for lunch or something, and IÂll come right back. IÂd love to meet you! Just donÂt ask me when! You wouldnÂt want to drive on down to Capitol Reef Natl. Park and come with me on my return trek to The Tanks, would ya!!!

Gotta go! I want to try to get the swap email done yet tonite before I leave again.
