Trees - deciduous and evergreen $$$

Well I'm shocked at how much trees cost at the nurseries. $300 is a bit much for a tree. I don't know how many gallons it was but I could haul it home in our truck. Do I just need to buy them really small and wait for them to grow? I bought a $40 Baby Blue Eyes Spruce. It's little. I have about a quarter acre lot. I don't want trees that will get too huge, but I'd like to buy a few christmas like trees and or some that are at least 6 ft tall right now. Any suggestions for a medium sized inexpensive pine trees for a sloping river rock space? I'm also thinking of a Serviceberry tree for another side of the yard. Any other suggestions for nice small-med size yard. Or some great shrubs which are budget friendly? How much should I expect to pay per tree? Thanks.
