I just had a soil analysis for my main bed. It found 4.6% oranic matter. Not bad but of course could be better. But everything else seems to be OK. For a time I thought the problem was drainage but yesterday I dug a hole filled it with water and waited for it to drain. I thought this could be awhile but lo and behold it drained in less than three hours. Now as to organic matter. This spring I applied alfalfa meal and cow manure, then I mulched with newspapers and grass clippings that are worn out now with a lot of paper showing. Somewhere along in summer I put some Rosetone. I've meant to put some horse manure but didn't get around to it. I've been wondering how that works on top of my "mulch", I suppose just put in on there. Pictures? Despite being somewhat computer literate a few years ago I still don't know how to do that. Besides most of my rose gardens are a mess. I've been thinking seriously about giving up on roses. Either that or to drastically cut back on the numbers as I can't take care of the ones I have. That may be the best solution what with being 80 years old now. But I have so much invested in trying to grow roses! I have tons of books and I spend hours poring over them. The DK book by the Quest-Risons I have nearly memorized. And then there is all that work, planting, pruning,etc. So meanwhile back at the ranch one has black spot, Japanese beetles, winter kill, poor choices, the wrong rose and all those infernal weeds that manage to tolerate much better the conditions that the roses find not to there liking. Now and then there is a rose that inspires. Lately that has been Baltimore Belle. Hardy, fragrant, vigorous and profuse blooming in Spring. It grows with what I have to give it. Currently has many new 10' canes. Just like that. No intense inspection to see if you can determine what ails a failing rose. Of course you can't.

(9b v. 10a, Sunset Zones probably between 18 and 19 for you, 20 to 21 for me) It seems your soil is quite a bit different in origin from what I've seen on line, being more of a deeper alluvium. Mine is the white shale layer of the Santa Monica Mountain formations. I water enough to keep plants alive, but not "thriving", particularly during the worst of the heat. I don't fertilize with anything other than prunings I shred and throw back on the soil surface as "mulch". I don't amend using anything, period. I avoid "organic" fertilizers due to the legions of moles, gophers, skunks, opossums, raccoons, coyotes, rabbits, rats, etc., all of which are either attracted by the organics themselves or to those which they attract. I don't need, nor wish to encounter any more "wildlife" that close to the house. Sometimes, it's a "witch" living this close to the "urban wilderness". I don't fertilize those in the ground with inorganic fertilizers, either. The soil is quite 'salty', as is the irrigation water. There has been no rain to flush the accumulated salts from the soil. Adding inorganics would only serve to intensify the "salts". I do use light, infrequent applications of inorganic fertilizer (always water soluble) to newly propagated, potted plants to replace the nitrogen they lose to watering. Being in an "extreme heat, extreme fire danger" area, I am allotted a relatively high level of "Tier 1" water use. I use, and have been using a quarter of that allotment, both to conserve the resource itself as well as to conserve the ever increasing cost of it. The areas I would normally irrigate show the reduced water consumption. I recently removed sixty feet of forty-plus year old escalonia hedge which had begun dying at one end and continued crisping and browning by the foot from the southern toward the northern end. Increasing the water to it had little positive effect, so eliminating the need, as I have done with all other plantings proving themselves "too needy", helps reduce the danger of combustion as well as need to increase the water bill. Just a couple of more thoughts after reviewing the new photo....I'd like to see a small (4-5') pyramid shaped evergreen (hinoki cypress - feathery, very slow growing) in the right corner up near the fence. It would repeat the window dormer and door overhange that is triangle shape. You also have to think of what will look good in the winter - hence the recommendations for traditional evergreens. Outside the fence, right corner, I would like to see a flowering tree of some kind. I think what bothers me is that the left side of the house is tall and heavy and the right needs something of substance to balance it. Since $ is a problem for now, see if you can find some of the flag stone like your outside walk way is and put them in a sitting area. Set them around, then take a knife and cut an outline, dig down the depth of the stone plus 1 inch, put 1 inch of sand, put stone back in, grass seed the remainder area (makes it easy to run a lawnmower over the stones. That area looks rather small, so I would opt for just a few evergreens to 'ground' the perimeter, then use containers of difference sizes/shapes in between the evergreens. Consider items to put outside the fence area but closer than your lilac. Just a few items that will 'extend' the view of your yard. I can't see from the photo but it looks like the left side out beyond the fence could have a nice gentle curve of shrubs making the lawn area where the chairs are and the inside of the fenced area appear as if one large circle. The curve (or line if you prefer) would feel like gathering arms enclosing the whole area, create a boundry, so as people come in the driveway they have a sense of direction. As for under the small lump out window, get some cinder blocks with holes, stack them up, and plant some annuals for now. (Or build a bench like used at a picnic table.) They are easy to move around and you will get a better feel for height, shape, etc. this year. As others have stated, you want to be able to see things from inside your house as well as the outside. Go for blocks of color but keep colors to just 2-3. Too much variety and color becomes busy and confusing to the eye. While you may appreciate the variety up close, from a distance it can look muddied and bland. But you may like the cottage look......IMHO, I think the house calls for firm shapes and colors and simplicity. Brightly painted chairs could provide the accent color you need to give it punch (like the chairs by the maple tree, but painted a bright yellow, and placed on your new 'patio/sitting area.' Finally, just take your time. Remember it all takes maintenance!
