Yellow Rose at the Zoo

Does anyone know what this rose is? We saw it at the Bronx Zoo. It was growing through the trees near one of the displays. I love the way it looks and would like to buy it for my garden. Thank you.

Would there be a way to find out from someone at the zoo what the variety name is?

It is a good-looking rose, and the foliage is unusual. I wonder if it could be Topaz Jewel, a yellow hybrid rugosa -- I'll put a link to some photos below.

I should have asked when I was there. I live about an hour away so I won't be back to the zoo again for awhile. I forgot to mention that I noticed that this bush was very thorny too.

susan, I was over there today, she wanted me to see how the Harisons are loaded with buds. They are, but the blooms aren't quite as spectacular yet, but it is early for our zone. You should have seen that scene today. In just one year, that group of Harisons has almost enclosed that azalea, hard to believe the several bigger plants put out so much new growth in one year. In time, she may have to prune it, but she doesn't like to; I'm inclined to let them go their way myself. Even the leggy one wasn't noticeable with all the new growth. Yes, they are wonderful! You should see my spindly little thing with two buds on it. I'll try to find the rose id forum but probably won't know what the other one is.

I would recommend any of the early oriental yellows. They will bloom in Early April or even earlier for you. The whole month before all other roses. They are fragrant, absolutely disease resistant, last long in a vase if you cut the whole branch, bloom for weeks and look absolutely breathtaking. They also have beautiful color of canes in winter, fern like foliage and bright red cherry-like hips in summer. In addition r Primula leaves has terrific fragrance, that is why it is called "incense rose". Best unfading pink rose and yellow rose

Hi Sue I'm trying to think of a pink that doesn't fade in Melbourne, but there are few. Probably Flamingo and Queen Elizabeth are closest, but both grow very tall in my garden. The Childrens Rose is a pale pink to begin with, but doesn't fade. Gertrude Jeckyll doesn't fade and has a great perfume, but she''s not to everyone's taste. Gold Bunny and Friesia are very popular yellows here, but I can't vouch for their colourfastness. All those are readily available in Eastern Australia. Isn't our limited range of roses a pain? Sue

What did you use for the Aphids? Leaves turn yellow, exhibit chlorosis, for many reasons and sometimes people spray inappropriate things on plants to eliminate Aphids that cause the plants leaves to die, which yours are doing. If something was sprayed on those leaves that restricted that leafs ability to breath or photosynthesize the plant will cut off nutrient flow to that leaf and it will die.

Do you think it looks like the photos of Topaz Jewel in the link I posted? That is also very thorny like the rose you saw.

I e-mailed someone who does landscaping at the zoo, so if she gets back to me I'll let you know.

It does look a lot like the photos of Topaz Jewel but not as dark of a yellow and no pink on the tips. At least I didn't notice any pink tips on the flowers at the zoo. Thank you for asking your friend about the rose. That would be great if she knows what it is. It was such an odd thing to turn the corner and see all those roses in bloom climbing through the trees. Thank you for your help with this.
