looking for unusual looking HTs for my plant zoo

Can anyone recommend a striking or unusual rose for my plant zoo? I only plant very fragrant roses or unusual HTs. I dedicate most of the space to OGRs and ERs.

Any takers?

Glad now that I brought this subject up...sounds like you have interesting views and questions as well. Veilchen-what you're saying about the shorter the canes, the more damage possibility...good point. That is what I was wondering about. Harry-interesting idea about increased hardiness over the years...sounds plausible Digger-had never thought of that (insects on larger bushes). I just know I would love to start with a little bigger plants in April than I usually do. Donna-I forgot, where in NYS are you!? All I know is that it was kinda nice not to spend time I didn't have anyway last fall, cutting down and carrying away all that extra growth...if I knew I'd be doing it all in April anyway. We haven't had that many ice storms (big one about 8 years ago), but yesterday the ice was AWFUL. I FELL down HARD coming out of my house...very thankful I didn't break my wrist as it slammed backwards in Abe Darby's rose bed!! And to think, I was on my way to the doctor's office anyway. Well, bluegirl, I am a heretic. I don't feed...anything. The soil and water are already too salty, so I don't use inorganic food. There are too many moles and gophers. I haven't amended and the only "mulch" is what I shred from the other trees and shrubbery (mostly creeping fig, bamboo and bougainvillea). The soil has been fallow for thirty-plus years and I'm not doing anything to increase earthworms so I don't use any organics to provide the moles more of them to burrow for. There are many rabbits, squirrels, chaparral rats, coyotes and probably a stray bob cat or two, so I'm not using anything they can consider "food". I let the weeds grow because they literally mask the new rose shoots from the vermin who are determined to eat them. The hill is mostly natural, though cleared for fire and we back up to native chaparral hillsides, so preventing the "wild life" is virtually impossible. The roses which perform well with these conditions have earned their places here. Those which don't, go away. I agree with you, though. Blue for You is drop dead gorgeous, healthy, vigorous and intensely fragrant. Because it is patented, I presume Heirloom obtained it in the batch of Euro Desert stock they received from Vintage, and is working on licensing. Though, I have no first hand information to that effect, it seems the most logical to me. I hope someone finally releases it again. It is head and shoulders better than Rhapsody in Blue in my climate. Kim

If it is actually a conifer, Widdringtonia is as good a guess as any, but I think it's not a conifer. I have had people think that one of my Banksias is a conifer (and some of them were real coneheads) due to the foliage, and I've had others think that another Banksia's dried seed pods were cones. So I wonder if this is an Australian angiosperm? I think that someone else suggested that as well.

I don't have it but have seen it. That would have to be the rose called "Wedding Cake" It's unusual, not fragrant though. How they came up with that name I have no idea.

I would recommend any of the early oriental yellows.
They will bloom in Early April or even earlier for you. The whole month before all other roses. They are fragrant, absolutely disease resistant, last long in a vase if you cut the whole branch, bloom for weeks and look absolutely breathtaking. They also have beautiful color of canes in winter, fern like foliage and bright red cherry-like hips in summer. In addition r Primula leaves has terrific fragrance, that is why it is called "incense rose".

Well, there are the stripes and the brown/tan/russets.

And Table Mountain, which can be white, pink, green or all of the above.

Abracadabra is my most unusual looking rose with dark red petals and yellow stripes. Imperatrice Farah often has green in the petals which can make it look rather unusual. Distant Drums has an odd color combination of tan and violet. There's spotted roses too like Spanish Rhapsody. I don't have any spotted ones yet. There's brown roses and grey roses - if you do a search you should find some discussions on those.

'Honey Dijon' is the color of honey dijon mustard. It is also fragrant.

'Purple Tiger' is a truly stunning and unusual rose but it takes TLC because it is not an overly vigorous plant. It has some fragrance, not a huge amount.

'Red Intuition' is red-on-red stripes, very cool. It has a little fragrance, not much.

'Climbing Butterscotch' is an interesting greyish yellow and a nice climbing rose too.
