New Rugosa - He's Not Very Happy - Help!

Hi,

I just purchased a Rugosa hybrid shrub rose (Magnifica) two weeks ago. In the past 5 days or so, I've noticed that it does not look very happy. Any advice you can give would be most appreciated.

There are no new flowers, and the existing buds/flowers have started to droop very sadly. In addition, the leaves are starting to curl slightly on the edges, and feel "crisp" along the edges as well. HOWEVER, the leaves are not turning brown. They are still green.

At first I thought it simply wasn't getting enough water. But we have an irrigation system, which has been on daily. None of our other plants seem to have issue. In addition to that, the extra waterings we have given the rose over the past 3-4 days have not made it look any happier. So I'm not sure what to do.

If it dies, of course, I will get my money back from the greenhouse I purchased it from... but I would prefer that it lives. I am a working mother with two small children, and Rugosas are about the only type of roses that I have time to care for and enjoy. They are wonderful. Even in the harsh winters of Minneapolis, they seem to require little care. We just moved to this house, and I've had a hard time even finding any Rugosas available to purchase. Most greenhouses only have those "Carefree Wonder" shrub roses--which, at least in my case, are anything but carefree.

Hi,
I should have added to my initial posting--I do not see any obvious insects on this Rugosa. Is it possible that I missed any? Yes, I'm sure it's possible... I examined the underside of the leaves, but didn't turn the plant upside down in my search either.

Also--the reason I am seeking advice from the Organic Rose forum is because I am not a big fan of chemicals. In addition to that, the Rugosa in particular does not like chemicals of any kind that I am aware of.

I really do not know whether this is at all the same problem you are having, so I'll describe for you my rose problem, what I've learned and how I am responding.

An unnamed rugosa inherited with my house has suffered yearly with yellow chlorosis (yellow with green veining) followed by scorching of leaves and then entire branches.

One possiblity is that there is an iron deficiency; the other possibility is that it is a different deficiency such as magnesium. I tried to correct for iron deficiency. If that doesn't work, I'll runs a soil test to shee what's going on.

I have found information indicating that only chelated iron with EDDHA in it does any good for soils above 7.5 PH and that it is directly due to the alkaline soils we have that causes the chlorosis. If you are on clay as I am west of Mpls, the clay will keep the soil alkaline as it continues to break down. I severly pruned my rose, pruning out ANY evidence of damage, an then added a fertilizer with EDDHA iron chelate around the rose. So far it looks good with plenty of new growth. Hopefully that is all that will be required.

Some site suggest spraying. Rugosas do not like being sprayed, I found out the hard way! Another site suggested Old antique roses (I have one-Rugosa rugosa alba) that is probably the strongest, heaviest blooming rose in my harshly exposed MN garden.

I hope this is all that is required - for both of us!!!

I just posted on another thread, but had to throw my 2 cents in ... I'm also delighted with my Bluestar. Some of the concerns I had turned out to be completely unfounded, and while I had a few start-up issues (as with just about everything!), Bluestar and Eurostoves addressed them promptly and professionally. In my experience, the weird issues raised on these Bluestar threads (ovens not sealing, doors flopping open, doors too hot) are completely bogus. Cleaning the top is a challenge ... one needs to not be too compulsive about that. But wow does it cook great!!! A few things in addition to the great burners ... I had read about long preheat times on the oven: I have the 48" and the small oven preheats in just a few minutes, the large in only a few more. I've never had ovens preheat so fast (my Bluestar was a replacement for a Viking). I consider myself an accomplished cook and baker, but my baking has improved dramatically with this oven (I've never had a gas oven before and was very concerned about how it would work for baking), my griddle is fabulous and, while it does need some time to have the temp even out across the surface, it preheats much faster than contributors to these threads would lead one to believe. I just turn it on before I start prepping the food to cook and it's perfectly heated in time to cook. I did tons of research before purchasing and was scared to buy something so costly sight unseen, but what a great purchase! Matt at Bluestar ... if you read these threads thanks for all your help! LOL larsi, that's funny, but actually it's pretty true. Walmart is a store that values its shelf space. If it's not producing profit, the product mix is changed. Not all Walmarts will carry the same product mix either since some things sell well enough in one area to justify keeping it where others it won't. Few grocery stores here carry much powder at all. Many carry none. I was surprised to see Home Depot start carrying Ariel about 6 months ago. First I've seen it in this area. Mara, FYI Woolite and Cheer are both P&G products. Cheer Free has been used by a lot of people at least who used to hang around the forum and found it to be a very effective and low-sudsing product. They highly recommended it for FLs. A detergent does not have to have an HE symbol on it to be used in an HE machine. Actually, many detergents have been "HE compatible" and not true HE detergents, for example Charlie's Soap. I suspect that part of the issue of not updating the website is that they'll wait until it's rolled out. As I recall the liquid compaction conversion, the country was divided into something like 5 zones and introduced over the course of something like a year. It could be a similar situation here. I don't know how people keep saying powders are so much cheaper than liquids. The cheapest powder I've found that works acceptably is much more than the liquids I've bought. Let's see, I've bought Tide for 36ÃÂ¢ per 32 load bottle, ProWash paid me 75ÃÂ¢ to buy it, A&H was free, Xtra 32 load was $1.75, and I just bought 110 load Ajax for $5 and 150 oz Era for less than $7. A 40 load Great Value powder cost me something like $10 last time I bought it and it's not performing as well as the other detergents unless I use additives so I won't be bothering with it anymore. And yes, I probably have 2-3 years worth of detergent so I won't be buying any more. Just hope my washer keeps a chugging away!

When an assailant is believed & a victim is disbelieved simply because the guy is a guy & the girl is a girl (& this is almost always the case, especially in sexual assault), there's something terribly terribly terribly wrong. It's especially distressing to hear the "victim is guilty until proven innocent" in the year 2010; Barbara was assaulted in 1969, & attitudes have supposedly become more rational, enlightened, & accurate in the intervening 41 years.

Why did you sign anything after the fact? That they hit rock would have been their own stupidity. Now it's costing you. If they dug too deep, the damage is on them. Play hard ball. They are. The broken decking should have been realized as a likely event, IMHO, you should have seen that one coming. That they would only make you pay for the 20% of undamaged is almost reasonable except they only left 20%. They should have covered it all. You can't leave 20%. That's ridiculous. The irrigation is normally toasted during this process. These guys will not pussy foot around when digging. If there is no Due Date for the delivery of the finished pool, you have no control over when they show because you have no leverage. Like I said, play hard ball. They are. Scott

The other possibility is just plain old transplant shock, which occurs with some roses when they are moved. It doesn't matter if they are moved from pot to ground, pot to pot or ground to ground, some roses just sulk for a couple of weeks after being moved. Keep watering, that's the best response for transplant shock.

Thank you, both BKoopman and Diane_NJ, for your advice. I will probably take both tips and work simultaneously, as this rose is looking a little sadder each day and I'm worried about running out of time. I'll probably look for a fertilzer with EDDHA, as well as watering the crap out of it... Our soil is very weird; it's a mixture of both sand AND clay. Seems odd, but maybe it's not that uncommon.

My question to BKoopman is... where do I go to find a product with EDDHA in it? Do any particular brand names come to mind? If you don't know, don't worry about it, but I thought I'd at least ask... otherwise I'm at the mercy of the sales person I run into at the local greenhouse, and lately I haven't had much luck with them. The other week I asked a sales lady at Malmborg's if they had any Rugosa roses, and she didn't even know what I was talking about.
