Thrips control nematodes question

I used to find information about thrips control using beneficial nematodes on a web site called hiredbugs.com. The website doesn't exist anymore in the form that I remember. No nematodes, just organic chemical sprays. Does anyone know/remember a company that has them and the actual name of the neatode that controlled them? If I remember correctly, there were two types of nematodes.

I just came across nematodes at gardensalive.com. There are apparently nematodes for the northern and southern areas.

It's at Natures Control. They have a button that says 'Our Hired Bugs' The 'double death' mix has two varieties of nematode. I put some on last week and I hope they work.

I got them cheaper by ordering them from a local dealer. The shipping is much more expensive if you order direct. They also have a button to find a dealer in your area.

DONT USE SOAP. Soap contains a lot of stuff that is very harmful to plants and the chemical contents can vary considerably. I have given several plants bad burns by using soap. By far and away the best insect control is the organic Neem Oil. There are variety of commercial brands available. Once every 2 months is usually sufficient. Make sure you follow the dilution guidelines. If you use a sprayer, wash with a soap(!)solution every 3 or 4 applications to prevent the oil clogging the jets.

Thank you! Yes, they totally do come in colors: solids, stripes and a wide assortment of sizes! Even different color coded end hooks, plastic and metal. Ones small enough to wrap around your ponytail to keep your hair up. (Yes, I have done this) In my past life I was a vendor on Grateful Dead tour, which evolved into vending my work at various large music festivals all over the country. My whole display was built of bungees, ez-ups and spring clamps! My stockpile of bungees and clamps is huge. They fill at least 2 of those big plastic storage bins you get at the big box stores. I will say I have been know to wear both bungees and clamps. Spring clamps hanging off the tails of my shirts clamped in chains and bungees round my neck at the ready to build the booth. During those said shows I would be found with at least a dozen clothes pins clipped to my fanny pack and shirt tails. Also high fashion. I might not be the best rose gardener (yet, I am still hoping..), but give me a box of bungees, clamps, a couple tarps and a few poles and I could build a shelter that would survive hurricane and snow, and remain standing till the sun came out, for sure. A spare roll of duct tape and some zip ties are always handy, too. With all my past experience I know I could whip up an excellent PVC and plastic Hoop house greenhouse. Unfortunately I have not one square foot of available space to do so or I would have already done it.

I had nothing but a sore back for my efforts spraying for Western Flower Thrips. The big problem for someone with a lot of roses is the life cycle. Quoting from University of Minnesota, emphasis added: "Depending on environmental conditions and nutrient levels, female WFT lay 130Â230 eggs during their lifetime (Robb 1989). The female WFT has an external ovipositor with two opposable serrated blades that are used to cut through the plant epidermis and deposit eggs in the tissues below (Childers and Achor 1995). Eggs are deposited in leaves, bracts, and petals and hatch in 2 to 4 days (Pfleger et al. 1995). The eggs of WFT are fairly well protected and few pesticide sprays are effective against them. "WFT do not overwinter outdoors in the Upper Midwest but overwinter in soil and clover in the Mid-Atlantic states and southern Pennsylvania (Felland et al. 1995). Under greenhouse conditions, WFT probably reproduce continuously throughout the year. "WFT give birth to large numbers of young, have rapid reproductive cycles, and increase their population faster than their predators, so early detection and control is essential (Mound and Teulon 1995). The life cycle of WFT consists of five stages: egg, two feeding larval instars, nonfeeding prepupa and pupa instars, and adult (Figure 1). The development time from egg to adult is 7 to 13 days when temperatures range from 62 to 98F (Robb 1989)." Spinosad works upon contact or feeding on sprayed material. Given the extent of thrips in some environments (like mine), it's can be really tough to get the material on the bugs. I've learned that white roses grown close to the wilder areas of my garden are going to suffer, while darker roses in the same location, filled with thrips, look just fine. Hi, I just spotted your question. There is an easy organic solution to your question which is always 'put down' by those who know everything. For a planter...mix 1 cup of fresh, uncooked coffee grounds with 1 cup of granulated sugar. Work this combination into planter soil surface and water well. Easy. Try it. An old method that was commonly used in the Victory gardening days to treat any plant prone to nematodes. If planting carrots, etc. run this sugar/coffee combination down the planting row then plant and cover seeds.

HI,
I just transplanted lamb's ear to around my roses. It is suppose to contron thrips. I haven't had any changes to post, of course, for I did it yesterday. I've read quite a bit and found several sources recommending this for thrips.

Sweetpea, does it make a difference what kind of lamb's ear you plant? I know of 2 different blooming lamb's ears and recently saw one at the garden center that does not bloom. This sounds interesting.

Kiki - You posting went to me, not sweatpea. I wouldn't plant lambs ears with roses - one is xeric (lambs ears), the other is NOT (roses). I have my roses underplanted with dianthus, creeping phlox, and lavender.

The nematodes recommended on the web sites are to be used in a environment with a humidity of 50-60% HA HA here in Denver. We have about 14% in the summer. Seems like they are more suited for a greenhouse environment.

Back to the Dr. Bonners. It seems to be helping some, but I have to be careful - with the heat, the soap lets the flower petals burn to a crisp.

Could you point me to where you read that the predatory nematodes require high humidity? I was only aware that predator mites required high humidity.

i am putting the nematodes out today. gulf coast biotics. i don't know about the lambs ear. they really can harbor pests if not cleaned out of the dead under lying leaves.. i am moving/sping mine. ill let yall know about the 'todes!
