Reg, I have used the plastic bag technique for midge here in the Az desert and it works. In one of my rose beds where I had 65 roses, there was an area were midge attacked 3 rose bushes. I took some black plastic trash bags and opened them up and layed them down under the rose bush, I then finished by securing the plastic into the ground with some fabric mulch pins. You have to make sure the ground is completely covered around the rose. It works as ann said above, the larvae can not live in the plastic it needs the dirt. I had to leave the plastic bags down for approximately 6 weeks until the leaves grew in and the rose looked healthy again. It works very well, I found that it worked better then any sprays and was easier and safer. With a spray you have to spray every 7 to 10 days, with the plastic you lay it down and you are done.I like to go organic as much as I can because I like to cut bouquets and bring them into the house, and who wants a bouquet full of pesticides on them when you put your nose down into the roses to take a smell. I would try this first before spraying. Now it does not look pretty but you have to keep in mind it is only temporary. Good luck and if you try it let us know. Carrie (rose forum member since 1998)

The problem is that if it is a once blooming rose it will only bloom on OLD wood or LAST YEARS growth. If you keep cutting off the new growth off it will never bloom. Without seeing a bloom it would be impossible to ID it for you. Is there anyway you can put a trellis behind it and let it grow on that so it doesn't touch the house?

I had thought that as well, Diane, but didn't see the orange tinge in the pics. So last night/early morning I did some sleuthing and found this company, Windmill, is out of Canada and is a part of PanAmerican Nurseries. Looking through their catalogue, I suspect they are the source for many roses sold at both Palatine and Hortico. They sell the roses you bought in two sizes. I looked through their catalogue with no luck finding these exact roses, but suspect they are one of the various Canadian offerings from AgCanada. Calling would be the only way to truly ID them, but I presume they are off-patent or there is some reason they don't use the true name. The hardy roses start on page 26 and the reference to yours are on page 54/55 listed as Showpot and Showtainers. Looking through these pics again, I wonder if the red one might not beEmily Carr, (p.28) one of the Canadian Artist Series, although it is listed for Z3 and yours is Z4. Morden Sunrise (p. 30) is also listed as Z3. Perhaps that info could help find yours. Of course you could always solve the mystery by just calling! LOL! : -D P.S.
