I'm sad about my beautiful New Dawn !!! PICS

Last year and this she developed RRD-----DH just chopped most of it down---Ann said it is possible it could be something else---luckily there is still one green cane so maybe it will grow back healthy----

Thank goodness I do have other ND bushed--I hope they stay healthy !!!

I can understand that you are sad, because one ND rose got sick. I once had a small New Dawn in a container on a roof top terrace in Germany and loved it. Here in SoCa I have been told that it doesn't perform well because it needs more winter chill, so I didn't even try to grow it again :-(.

Hopefully your ND rose will recover! Good luck!

Hi vlodom, I was just going through some similar decisions recently and rhonda in upstate SC convinced me to go with Crepuscle. She posted a picture of it growing at one year old that is incredibly enticing. Plus, it will do that well in less than ideal sunlight. And it has few thorns. Just a really nice rose, I think. I've been interested in New Dawn too. Someone has been working on me towards one of New Dawn's seedlings: Penny Lane. That one has really good shade tolerance, she said, and she loved its fragrance. I assume it will grow as well in the Piedmont as New Dawn will, though she was writing from Kansas. Some other rambling or climbing roses you might take an interest in: Madame Alfred Carriere, Dublin Bay, Red Fountain, Quadra, Laguna, Reve d'Or, Jaune Desprez, William Allen Richardson, Sympathie, Goldfinch, Creme de la Creme, Climbing Pinkie (especially the cultivar at the Antique Rose Emporium). If you'd really like a lot of bushiness as well as the ability to put out some long canes, then take a look at Ghislaine de Feligonde. It ought to mix well with Crepuscle too. Avoid Iceberg, including climbing Iceberg, if you want to try to avoid having to spray for blackspot on the east coast. I wanted Iceberg so much that I decided to give it a try anyway... but sure enough, all I'd read about it being more of a problem on this side of the country turned out to be correct. Thanks everybody! I'm pretty tickled as these are my first roses. The trellis' are 3/8" thick steel and they are the scrap pieces left when smaller squares of steel plate were cut from it. I have a local metal worker who after paying the bills with boring stuff is a found object artist and he had the pieces lying around. He simply welded the side rails on them and we stuck them over 3 feet deep into the ground. They are about 8" from the wall which it concrete hardi-board. So it's about as sturdy and indestructible as you can make something. I hope. If anybody is in the area (Mid TN) I'd be happy to send you his contact--these are one of a kinds but he's brilliant, creative and pretty affordable. The roses are now about 7'. I have almost 35 feet from side to side for them to spread, 12 feet from the ground to the top of the roofs and the range for them I've read is 10-20 feet. Surely that's enough space? If it isn't and I'm lucky enough that the RRD doesn't get them first I guess I'll chalk it up to a learning experience and whack her back! So my plan will be to let the big new canes work themselves on up toward the roofs, let the older canes fill out the top of the trellis and keep tucking the strays back on to the trellis. Perfect. Fortunately the doors are not heavy traffic ones so maybe we can keep the shredded clothes to a minimum. She does have some serious thorns and a bit of an attitude! ;-) Any suggestions for gloves? Thanks to everybody here. I'd have never figured out any of this without the pointers and advice. I've got 8 bands in pots out in the kitchen garden so I'm counting on you!!

Allison, I love your laundry room! I wish I had a bigger laundry room but just having one across from my bedroom and not in a tiny little closet and not having to go to the laundry mat is one of the nice features that sold me on the townhouse I bought a little less than 11 years ago. Where are your hampers? I just love your taste of knowing where everything should be in a room to create rooms with both class and beauty. I just bought two white wicker hampers with two compartments at Fran's Wicker & Rattan Furniture Store and were amazed at the just about no smell. They have velcro cotton drawstring bags inside and are very well sealed. I aired them out for a week so they will have no smell at all. I am glad I went with such pretty hampers that were reasonably priced for the quality. Now I have to take the suggestions I got from others on making the rest of the room nice when I have time.

Thanks everyone! Thanks for the information on the dormer, that gives me something else to research. We had toyed around with the idea of razing the 2nd floor altogether and completely redesigning it but nixed that idea (for now anyway). The kitchen is down to the studs right now, I hope to have a working kichen by the end of January :) I posted a thread on the kitchen forum with pictures of all my ideas and linked it below if you're interested. I have also changed the landscaping to more of a cottage garden. I love continuous color all season and various textures so I'll work on adding some of those pictures as well. I have considered naming the house but haven't really come up with anything yet. I'll have to give it some more thought :) I'll see what other pictures I can get off the external hard drive this weekend to give you some other images of the house. I truly enjoy this house and we love giving it our own personal touch!

I am so sad for you! What an amazingly beautiful bush it was growing and blooming so magically for so long. Obviously it responded to your love for it, to grow so huge and lovely. I'll bet it will recover and will come back for you. I love the picture of you with it. You look very much like my beloved Aunt Juliet (my mom's sister). She was a beautiful, kind-hearted woman just like you.

Oh, Florence--that New Dawn is gorgeous! I do hope it recovers.

Just a possibility--last summer my new floribunda started putting out strange growth. I worried a lot that it might be RRD--cut the cane out as low as I could go, etc. Kept on worrying--until someone else posted a pic with the identical strange growth. That poster was also worried it might be RRD. However, someone from Florida posted an response identifying the strange growth as caused by chili thrips. So maybe (I'm trying to be hopeful) that was your problem rather than RRD.

I've been watching that floribunda closely this spring to see if there is any more strange growth. Everything is fine so far. I figure the chili thrips were imported along with the new floribunda last spring cuz I don't believe they could survive our winter temps here. In fact, I'm hoping those chili thrips froze their little butts off this past winter and will never return to my garden!

Just a thought.
