First Signs of Spring...Anyone got any?

Saw my first daffodils popping through the mulch yesterday. While I know March and April are the snowiest months of the year around here, it still was nice to see signs of life. Makes me want to start some seeds! I've been looking at the winter sowing forum and thinking about giving it a try.

Any other signs that winter will end someday?

Same up here. Bulbs are starting to pop. BUT big temp drop coming. It will be the coldest since our snap in Dec. Also been cruising the w.s. site and got some seeds from Trudi. Got my milk jugs sown and hoping for the best.

Today I saw a very large flock of Canadian Geese flying north toward CO. I saw some roses in my front yard were starting to bud out last week, too bad it got down to 4 f on Saturday night. I'm up in the mountains east of Albuquerque. Also, our horses are starting to shed out.

Yours were not the only weather bones making complaints. I told several people that this was not going to be pleasant. We had a forecast of over 1/4 inch rain today, getting icky tonight. Well, it was about 35F, raining, soaking everything thoroughly after lightning and thunder and a good bit last night. Next thing I know that rain was WHITE! Over half an inch of white rain later, it decided to get "clear" again, and now it's coloring up again. IT IS APRIL darn it! All my daffodils are lying face down in their beds! Now that I think of it, I might go bry my head in my bed too!

What I remember most about San Antonio was sitting on my balcony one night ... it was 2 AM ... and the temp was 102. That wasn't unusual. Humidity was worse than Tulsa or Atlanta. Anybody that lives for any time in SA (and other areas too, I'm sure) understands why siesta's came into being. I'd go to a walking track at night ... but not before 11 PM ... and it was always packed until 2 or 3 in the morning. I will be putting my brugs in the ground this year. Didn't have time to do anything with my yard last year so didn't even try. Wanted time to get a feel for the place (I have 2/3 of an acre) and think about what made sense. The conclusions I came to were to do raised veggie beds, get rid of all the shrubs, crepe myrtles and miscellaneous junk trees the couple that had owned it for 42 years had planted and replace with fruit trees, move the patio from the west side of the house to the south side under a large pecan tree (and install it properly this time LOL), get a Bobcat and slope the area around the house itself so rain would go away instead of puddle around the foundation. It got so bad last spring it actually ran under the house through the crawl space vents. The west side of the house they put in two poorly installed goldfish ponds. One I got rid of last year, the other goes this year ... especially since the pump gave out this fall and I checked the cost of a replacement. Location of the pond is also bad ... hell, the placement of everything on the west side of the house is bad ... which is why most is already gone. I'm going to build a pergola from the door leading out of the garage down the length of the house on the west. It has no shade what-so-ever and just gets blasted in the summer. Going to plant vines on it for shade. Can't do trees, even fast grown trees, as all the sewer pipes are in that area and tree roots and sewer pipes just don't mix. I also have to remodel the house itself ... literally everything. Sigh ... I should be done sometime before I hit retirement. brian

I know that it has been a lot warmer up here this year than in Colorado so this may just be some encouragement for some of you. And, I'm only going to make one more post on this thread because, it really felt like spring here today. The thermometer said 64°F, the warmest day so far this year. It has already started to rain so . . . it isn't all sun and lawn violets. But yes there are, at least 6 lawn violets blooming in my yard! And, in just about the warmest and most sheltered location hereabouts, I discovered the snowberry bushes were leafing out! Steve And life gets more exciting with each passing day And love is either in your heart or on its way. Don't you know that it's worth every treasure on earth To be young at heart. For as rich as you are, it's much better by far To be young at heart. And if you should survive to 105 Look at all you'll derive, out of being alive. Then here is the best part You have a head start If you are among the very young at heart.

Amy, DH is....opinionated :). He has remarkably strong feelings about decor, which is sometimes a blessing and somtimes just difficult, lol! He has been very involved in every decision made about our home and I suppose I should be grateful that he's interested, but sometimes I just want to pick things and not have to field the commentary, you know? I wonder also if it's just the chair fabric or the mental image of the room it came from in his grandparents' apartment. It was a gorgeous room (gold, gray and black - professionally decorated, very classic), but I learned recently that he REALLY didn't like the decor. I have a few swatches pulled out of my F&B swatch deck, don't remember if String is one of them, but it was one of my original considerations for this room. Have you used it? Sky - hmm, that's unfortunate that RH doesn't have swatches available of the Lava. I don't have an RH store in my city (closest one is a 5 hour drive away) and I'd be hesitant to order drapes sight unseen.... I've been trying to figure out from the pictures on the website if the lava is a warm gray or a cool gray. It seems to tend almost towards a slate-ish colour in some of the pics, almost blueish? Is that true in person? Linen was another consideration for drapes either here or in the dining room - what is the quality of the RH linen drapes? Thanks!

Hey, the Crocus are up! and I'm sure my tulips will be showing up pretty soon. My girlfriend who lives up in Evergreen saw a bear!! I think everything is confused, including me!

Heard a redwing blackbird the other day and they lay eggs late spring/early summer.

1 Daff opened today; a beautiful orangey-red little flower close to ground [not crocus, but don't know what since this is our first spring in the house and except for the bulbs I planted in Fall, don't know what's planted].

But best sign yet...calving started 2 days ago in the field next to our house...5 so far and lots more coming I'd imagine!1

We got that "cold snap" that smdmt was talking about back on the 13th. Bulbs had started to show above ground but that put a stop to 'em. It is now warming again and we have flocks of robins!

I'd be absolutely delighted to hear a redwing blackbird . . . now that's a real sign of Spring!

Heard a Flicker tapping on the flashing on my chimney.
Finches have started singing their Spring song.

Its bone dry up here, but the crocus are up and opening, along with a number of rock iris. My first daffs got slimed by the Feb. cold spell, but more are coming to take their place. I SO want to dig in the dirt, which is of course, not frozen, but I'm holding myself back.

Well last week my red velerian and some Iris began to get new growth, but this week we've gotten about 2 feet of new snow, so any signs of spring have now been re-covered. I'm not in Colorado, but I'm in Truckee, CA (Sierras). I'm kind of in forum limbo, but I can still relate to the Rockies post...Maybe next week we'll see some more spring.
