He got a job, I got bulbs and bare roots!!!

I was so bad yesterday! We went down to the Springs and I got lots of Spring bulbs/bare roots! Almost 200.00 worth. So... my question is, when will be the best time to plant most of these in 6" pots to get a jump start until I can plant them in the yard??? I got: Cinnamon and Lady Fern for the shady places under the pine trees. Pink and white Bleeding Hearts to plant with some Lady's mantle (Wintersown) in the front shaded bed. Stargazer Lillies, Stella de' Oro's and Oriental Lilies to go into a bit sunnier area... plus some dwarf canna's and tuberose to use in pots with other annuals that are being winter sown. Should I plant the peonies in pots or just wait for the real spring to get here since I know they don't like their roots messed with! We'll be making a couple of raised beds (with hoop houses if I can push my luck, for the asparagus and strawberry plants. I have had so much fun this winter just looking over my yard and dreaming of what will look good where. I also have a lot of plants on order from Michigan bulbs that will get here in April, such as Ostrich fern for some really blah areas that need something big!

This year is going to be a real learning experience for me and I can't wait!!

Hi Glo,

ThisÂll be shortÂfor meÂbut I thought IÂd reply before I leave again!

Did you get these all in bare root (the ones that arenÂt bulbs)? I think this may be one of those that everybody will have a different take on, but if it were me, IÂd just keep them in a cool/cold dark place until they could be planted directly outside. I donÂt think youÂd gain much by sticking them in pots firstÂand waiting will save you some work. (I know! I know! You want to do something NOW!!!)

This, again, is just me, but if you stick the ferns and bleeding hearts (are they "old fashioned" Dicentra spectabilis?) in a COLD place or the fridge for a week or two to get them acclimated, I think you could plant them out now already (My bleeding heart is coming up already, and the ferns will stay dormant until it gets warm enough). With the warm weather weÂve been having this year, they should be fine, and if youÂre gonna worry about them, mulch them over for a while with non-cottonwood leaves or (weed seed free) straw or wood/bark mulch. Same thing with the lilies, Stellas, and peonies. Assuming your soil is workable already, IÂd be inclined to just harden them off and plant them! Even better if you do it during a week when you know weÂre into one of our warm stretchesÂjust to give them a little bit of "settling in" time before they get hit with more cold. When you plant the peonies, be sure you bury them with the eyes only about an inch below the surface of the soil. TheyÂre kind of like Iris! Too deep and they may not bloom for you. And the Peonies will take a few years to develop into the big, beautiful plants you see in pictures, so donÂt be disappointed the first couple yearsÂand by about year 3, buy a peony ring to put around them to help support the flowers when they get rained on!

The Cannas and, IÂve never grown them but, I think the tuberoses, need to be protected from frost, so that sounds like something that might be good to stick in pots to give you a head start.

I hope youÂre happy with your order from Michigan Bulb when you get it. Back when I was at PaulinoÂs, that always seemed to be the mail order company most people complained aboutÂquality, size, etc. Let us know what you think when you get your stuff. IÂd be interested to hear if maybe theyÂve improved in the last 9 years!

Thanks, Skybird, sounds like a plan to me! I was planning to do most of the digging and leveling myself, but last night my wonderful dh said he's going to hire a landscape company to do the really heavy work for me. There is a lot that I want to do and I figured it would be a few years before I could get it done doing a little at a time. The old back ain't what it used to be. Most stuff that I got, I plan to put into a holding bed and then move as I go. I know peonies do not like to be disturbed, so their spot will be the first area to revamp so they can go where I want them right away.

Well, I sure hope what I ordered from Mich. Bulb is ok... they had a $20.00 off $50. plus some things, buy 1 get 1 going on at the same time so I ordered quite a few things in the perennial area. Will let you know.

Just stopping in with a long overdue hello and howdy do? After settling into our new home and my new nursing job two years ago now, Chase and I are relocating to San Jose CA! The gypsy in my blood is very happy! I'm in MA still organizing the move and handling the real estate joy, Chase is already there since the beginning of august and loving it. I'm stuck in MA until our home here sells. Update on plants...most cannot come with me, very sad about that :( but its a chance to start anew I guess. The majority of my hippy bulbs did not do well and are about the size of a golf ball, they just did not like the home we moved into two years ago! I'm probably going to trim, clean up and ship them to myself. Other than that I'm only going to take a few of my older plants with me, and I'll have to get certificates to cross into CA with them. Hope everyone is doing great and I'm hoping to fall off the hippy wagon and start fresh again out west. Hopefully I'll be able to grow them out doors year round? Peace to all, Chaz

thank you for that. I've got things saved people have written about inside, outside and misting. I wasn't set up to do that, have way overspent, am low on energy. It was all I could do to make myself turn back to my plants from other things going on. In due course, I'll try out your method, I'm not set up with any fluorescent light except on my kitchen ceiling, was going to work on that over the winter. Now I looked at the few gallon pots I had, was wondering where to get more, and decided the heck with it, went and bought some plastic half-gallon terra cotta colored pots at the hardware store (no they look like almost a gallon). If roots start growing through the bottom holes of those, I'll deal with it then. I know gallon pots would be better, they are too heavy, take too much potting soil, and have huge holes in the bottom, and I did not feel like looking for any more rocks to plug them. My cuttings have all these roots but no new leaves, so I wasn't sure if I should pot them up. Think I should, and am thinking of even potting up the ones that have bare stems and covering with soda bottles, and see what happens. But pot them in what soil? I've got contingency plans and shelves ready to move them to the west wall of my bedroom that gets only reflected light from the house next door (close), shut the register as far as it will go, and get a humidifier when I start to wean them out of the bottles. If I get to that point. Thank you for sharing your experience. I don't know if I should use pure potting soil or mix some peat and vermiculite in with it, been reading about H2O2, wonder if that will work instead of capstan when I start seedlings next spring inside, wonder if I should use it on my cuttings, tried some with one that is growing white moldy stuff on it, nothing happened with that, people talk about ml, how do I measure that? I read 1 tbsp then fill a cup with water. What H2O2? The regular kind you buy in the brown bottle at the drugstore? This aimed at anyone who may happen to read, not you, Angel. I've been following michelle_co's posts, and everything different ones write when they've had success, she has to bring hers in now, too, my situation is just a little bit different. I'm at a critical point now. I will watch them carefully and may have to wing it on some of it. I think every cutting but one that looks iffy in the medium George Mander recommended to me has rooted, 8 of those. Maybe that rose just roots easily. I had it going earlier, didn't see roots but it (and another kind) was growing new leaves, then the heat got them all. My rooted ones I stuck August 13, not quite two months, the temps outside were up and down like a yoyo but not like the heat wave we had earlier. It was the medium, the pop bottles, and luck I guess so far. I'm really scared to get any sun on them too soon. They were getting just a little sun outside, but it was cooler by then. I'll take the caps off the bottles for a few days before I take the bottles off, and then only for maybe about 4 hours a day for a week or so, it's so darn confusing, don't want to jostle those delicate leaves by too much off and on.

Thanks ronbre, for all your thoughts, there are some good ones in there! I love my house, but there are some things that were not well thought out by us, but that was because we were living in a FEMA trailer and wanted out of it in a hurry, so we found this houseplan and built it pretty much as is from the plan. The back door and the breakfast nook and the fireplace could have used some tweaking in where they were placed, but we were in such a hurry we didn't catch that. Weren't even in the house 2 years, when we got hit by another hurricane, and flooded with 3 ft of water, so again, we were in a hurry to get it fixed and get back "home" rather than living somewhere temporarily. I have always wanted a fireplace with a mantel to decorate, and so I think it needs to be a focal point, but obviously the big tv is also a focal point. My recliners are both actually a chestnut colored leather, one is just darker than the other, as we didn't decide we wanted two when we purchased the first one, therefore they are obviously from different dye lots. =( Again, my mistake, that's what I get for being in a hurry! But I definitely want to add more seating in this room, not just move around the chairs that I have now. I need a conversation area and so that is why I am thinking two club style chairs for either side of the entertainment center or adding a loveseat. Then I could make the reading nook like you are talking about by the window!!! The ceilings are great to look at and to have "mood lighting"(DH calls it nude lighting in the bedroom...ha) but it also makes me think things have to be centered off of the ceiling, like the entertainment center or our bed for example. You answered one question about the art with the red in it. I figured it was too big for that wall, but just wanted to see what others thought. It would only have about an inch clearance around it. I am also looking for some kind of chest or demilune table for that little wall. Trying to make that DH landing spot for keys, wallet etc, instead of the bar in the kitchen. The nightstands in the bedroom are the same height, the lamp on the left is a little shorter than the one on the right, I just thought they probably shouldn't be taller than the headboard of the bed. It's not real easy to reach the lamp to turn it off from bed. I need a console/buffet, more seating, coffee table, end table, lamps, rug, artwork, drapes. Accessories, I'll worry about later. I just want to get my big pieces set first. I have "hurricane fatigue" and just want this done and pray that we will have a quiet season this year, so we can actually relax and actually enjoy our home.

Oh Anja, don't give up hope!! I can't remember whether mine took a long time to grow or not!! I put Green & Saturn on both papilio flowers so if the cross takes, I will have plenty of seeds to go around. Not a special cross as aulicum and papilio would be but if it takes it should be good enough!! I'm looking at all the possibilities for Jungle Star and have decided just to try a couple and if they don't take then I do have a second scape on the way. I've got to control myself this season as I am really inundated with seedlings from past years, some of them are quite large and cybister and papilio crosses. I just have to get them to bloom!! I also don't want to stress out my new bulb as unless they offer this again next year, this might be my only bulb of this clone. I will definitely try one with Madame Butterfly and some old Santos pollen. Listen to me, I actually almost believe myself Ha! I do have another Jungle Star from a Dear Friend that has yet to bloom and expecting it to be slightly different in appearance. It's doing well but still a few years away from flowering. I thought I had another one but it turned out to be a Sumatra cross or maybe even a full fledged Sumatra, I couldn't really tell from the first flowering. J L Your bulbs from WFF look great!! We all look forward to seeing them all bloom! Luckily the weather hasn't been all that cold and as long as the boxes don't sit out in a cold truck during the evening we should be good to order for another few weeks! I'm just waiting for a Bogota to arrive from WFF; I struck out with ETBG so I thought I might as well give them a try. If I get another papilio then I'll live with it!! Donna

Oh, my gosh! Glo, please send the landscapers over when they are done at your place! I have work for them to do!

All those plants sound wonderful. I really wanted to try a peony but the dogs did something to it; I think they chewed off the eye(s) and that was that.

What a sweet DH to support your gardening! What are they going to do? Tiers? I'd love to see before and after pics if you take any.

I'll take lots of pics. We'll be doing a retaining type wall at the top, and then most of the rest will be tiered in small spaces for different plants. The small stuff like rock cress, alyssum, and edelweiss will be at the top and then we'll just go down with bigger stuff until I get it filled in. Thank God and Trudi for winter sowing!

As soon as they get done with my yard, I'll send 'em right to ya!
Off to w/s more stuff! It's 63 degrees out right now! I wanna dig!
