Blistering heat and blazing colors

After a short break in the 90's last week we're back up to the 100's.

Here is what this NOID red looked like for me in blistering heat:

The center has gold smudges that glitter in the sun:

Gorgeous but small.

Here it is compared to a 3-1/2" NOID cream-colored bloom:

The week of Labor Day the temps dipped a bit and I got more rich oranges in the center:

It's so hard to capture the color, true red with no pink tones:

Here are two NOIDs showing very different foliage. One will definitely grow more compact than the other:

Finally, the second cattleya orchid opened up and they smell heavenly:

Forecast calls for rain maybe next week, but I've heard that too many times before. Wish us luck--we need it!

Everything looks beautiful!!!

I just love the color on the Noids....both the red and especially the cream....what a beauty!!!!

You have asked about the stem on the Maverick. Yes it does have a velvet feel to the stem. I didnt notice it until you had nentioned it..LOL So i had to go and do a feel test..LOL!!!

Everything here is looking good. I wish that you all receive some rain soon. You all really need it badly!!!

The weather here was in the mid 80's and it is to cool down this weekend with highs in the 60's...Yikes!!! That will only last a few days thought!!!

My Black Tiger is blooming...Im so happy!!!! Ill have to post another thread to show them.

I also have a strange split in one of my Guillots Sunset at the soil line that looks like a naturat air layering... i want you to see it and let me know what you think!!!

Beautiful blossoms! ÃÂ Love the cattleya as well! ÃÂ I myself have not had success getting cattleyas to rebloom. ÃÂ I have no problem with Paleanopsis, those guys bloom again and againl. I keep mine in a double pane window box in my kitchen. ÃÂ Any clues as to what I am doing wrong if my Paleanopsis do ok?

I keep waiting for my UH Orange to open it's blossoms. ÃÂ I don't know if ÃÂ it is the heat, they turn brown around the edges and never fully open. ÃÂ I keep waiting, hoping one will fully open. ÃÂ It is a new cutting from this year, has plenty of good sized leaves, so I know it roots are ok.

Good news is a realized this week that my dwarf Singapore, a noid labeled as "yellow" and one labeled as "Weidner's Pink" that I can't find anywhere mentioned. ÃÂ They all have well developed inflos. ÃÂ Yeah! ÃÂ Always exciting to see plants blossom that I haven't seen blossom yet!

In my zone 6b Pennsylvania garden, I grown Gemini, Tamora, Lavaglut and olog. I have a friend in the same zone (near me) who has Cherry Parfait and a DIL who has Frederick Mistral. I'm thinking you might have slightly more humidity than I. My gardens are all day south exposed full sun. Gemini is a wonderful rose and does quite well, even with disease resistance, but like Diane NJ say, it shuts down over the very hottest, most humid part of the summer. Winters, it seems quite strong. Besides being very small, Tamora doesn't do so well in the heat and humidity either and is more prone to black spot. I'm not as thrilled with this rose as I could be and it suffers from winter die back. Frederick Mistral also suffers from winter kill, but not to the extent as Tamora. It is also a larger bush, more heat tolerant but still prone to black spot. Cherry Parfait, olog and Lavaglut are all outstanding in the gardens around here. Cherry Parfait is more prone to black spot, but is winter strong. Olog and lavaglut will get blackspot in my garden toward the end of the season and I do spray, but not as regularily as some of the others. Remember to keep Tamora, olog and Lavaglut toward the front of the bed since all these roses have a tendency to be squatty. Tamora looks more like a miniature except for the leaf and bloom size. The plant is so extremely tiny. This is just my take. All roses act differently in different areas.

Here's a hypothesis for you. I'm guessing that you get some wind from time to time. Not saying full blown Santa Ana, but perhaps you do. But it wouldn't have to be high wind. Being in California your dew points are generally no higher than 50-55 degrees, and if you get an east wind, much lower than that. Point is that very little wind, with dew points that low or lower, and temps even in the 80's will be VERY drying. So this establishes some extra water stress. Now for the tree part. When deciduous tress sense the fast shorting days, and cooling temperatures, they prepare for leaf drop and winter long before you see any signs. One of the things they do is start sealing off the vascular system in preparation of the severing of the leaf from the truck to prevent water and nutrient lose. So while the leaf is still attached, it flow of water is already greatly reduced. Now along comes a day or two 80+ degrees with 15 mph winds, and you have a formula for dry toasty leaves just like your seeing. Whats more you would not get this earlier in summer, as the vascular system is open full bore then. It's only when nearing leaf drop that the flow is impeded enough to cause scorching. FWIW, I life in NW Arkansas where we have rain throughout the year. Dewpoints can easily be 70 at any time in September with temps in mid 80's, but we are nearing leaf fall. If we get a few sunny warm days with some strong wind, exposed trees can sometimes get the same leaf burn. Especially if the tree is not at all drought resistant like Sugar Maple which are very common here. So in short, I think it's tree physiology combined with dry California air and sunny skies. If I'm right you can try stepping up the water on warmer/windier days, but even that may not help. Arktrees

I have not seen any yet this year, but I am sort of halfway hoping they will show up here at some point..... Not because I am crazy, but because they eat grasshopper eggs. It doesn't matter to me in a normal year when the grasshopper population is only average, but this isn't a normal year. We have tons of grasshoppers, so we need for the blister beetles to show up at some point to eat up a lot of the grasshopper eggs. If you start fighting the blister beetles when they first show up, they are fairly easy to kill by spraying them with insecticidal soap or by spraying the plants they are eating with a product containing Spinosad (which is organic). The brand of Spinosad I usually have in my shed in made by Monterey and I believe it is labeled as Monterey Garden Insect Spray, but there are several different Spinosad products on the market now. The longer you let the beetles stay around and reproduce, the harder it is to get rid of them and, as you no doubt have noticed, they can strip plants down to naked stems in no time at all. Sometimes, here on the internet I see people advising you can handpick them. Well, maybe some folks can handpick them where they live, but when they show up here, they generally reproduce so quickly that you don't have one here or one there or a dozen here or a dozen there....you have hundreds and hundreds of them, as Larry's photo illustrated so well. And, if you choose to make any contact with them, wear gloves or they'll make you break out in blisters. I can think of at least 1,000 things I'd rather do on a hot summer's day than to stand out there in the heat hand-picking blister beetles. If I had them present in small enough numbers that I could handpick them, I'd leave them alone anyhow, knowing they'll eat a lot of grasshopper eggs and knowing their population is so small that they cannot eat all my plants. (But, my garden is really big. Even a fairly small number can devastate a small garden.) If I had them present in large numbers, I'd probably spray Spinosad on plants I didn't want eaten....which would be perennial flowers, herbs or veggies, or any annual veggie or herb plants that still are producing and which I want to continue harvesting. If my garden was pretty much through producing for the year, I'd let them have it. It is very frustrating to have them devouring plants, but then, on the other hand, in a state like ours where grasshoppers can become a huge problem some years, I hate to kill off one of the few predatory insects we have that do help control grasshoppers. When we lived in Texas before moving here, I don't think I ever saw a single blister beetle once in my life, and I lived there for almost 40 years. The first time I saw them here, they showed up and totally devoured a beautiful Sweet Autumn Clematis vine that was about 5 years old. Then they disappeared and never touched the veggie garden. It was a couple of years later that they began showing up in the garden, but I think the first year that they damaged it enough that I sprayed them with insecticidal soap was 2010, and we had been here since 1999. So, they really haven't been a persistent problem here....just a periodic one. Some types of birds will eat blister beetles, and there is at least one kind of predatory blister beetle that eats the eggs of the striped blister beetle. HippyBKC, I am sorry to hear they devastated your garden like that. If they were here and were devastating my jalapeno peppers, I'd be out there in the garden killing every beetle I found. Jalapenos are one of my favorite crops and I can many, many pints of them every year so I'd hate to have anything destroying my crop. If you need to spray Spinosad and cannot find it in a local store, I've ordered it online before and had it arrive pretty quickly. One of the products containing Spinosad is Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew, which is a reference to how and where spinosad was discovered.

Thank you, everyone! I wish I could take credit--all I did was keep her alive, LOL. I was very surprised the man was willing to give her up but he had to thin his collection very dramatically and this was maybe a shy bloomer for him, too. Peg, the cutting of the grape-scented flowering seedling came from him, too, and I'm still waiting for any sign of an inflo on that one. At least it's very compact. Dave, at the rate this one grows and branches I'll be able to take cuttings in 2020 or so :) But thank you for your confidence! Joan, we still have a seedling cutting deal, my friend! How are you? It's been a long time! And I couldn't go to the sales this summer. Hope your patch is doing awesomely!

Love the orchids also! Can almost smell them just looking at the picture!

Jen/labland: Hope your UH Orange opens soon! I'm dying to see a picture. When we were at the S.D. SCPS sale, my hubby saw a large one in the courtyard outside with flowers and loved it, and sent me looking for it while he stayed in the line, but by the time I got there I guess somebody had bought it. So once we got inside, we bought a smaller one with no flowers. It had 2 tips with leaves, looked like a fully rooted plant, but when I took it home and transplanted it into a larger pot, I was surprised to see no roots, except for 1 tiny 1/2" piece which quickly broke off :-( So I am now treating it as a cutting (stripped all the leaves). It will be a while before I see any flowers. In the meantime, if your flowers open, I'll just enjoy yours thru the pictures!

Everytime i look at that Noid yellow, it reminds me of a Lemon Meringe Pie...or even "Lemon Cream Tart" it is just a natural beauty as is the red! They are both so unique and lovely!! Quite the "special Noids" that we talk about!!!

Gack, we hit 104 the last two days and my thermometer read 106 yesterday. Records falling left and right.

Laura, thanks! Can't wait to see your Black Tiger pics! I've read that it has super-thick petals. The Maverick is cool with the velvety stem but I wonder if it's also a slow grower. Mine is kinda "sleepy" while the others I picked up at the show are putting out a lot of new growth. Hope to see blooms next year.

The cream color is getting better with age, thankfully, because the first blooms were pretty "meh." The smell is vanilla and lemon. It's gonna be a tall tree, too. Yikes. My Intense Rainbow split, too, and I'm now trying to air-layer since it's unsightly and not looking like it will heal over completely. Maybe your GS split is from all the recent rain?

Jennifer, the cattleyas are outside and the person I got them from also kept them outside in the hot Texas summers, under shade trees. I lucked out with blooms this year; they were such a happy surprise! They are much more tolerant of our conditions outdoors here and seem to need more light than the phalaenopsis do. My phala. stay indoors and bloom well in a north/east facing window only. I'm also looking forward to seeing your UH Orange bloom!

Sun, thank you--I feel very fortunate to have that stunning red. I wonder if under cooler conditions it will be dark pink or dark orange instead of red. You know how I feel about orange!

Love your flowers, they're beautiful! I'm wondering about your noID red, if you had any inkling that you were buying a plant that would flower that color? Red is the last color I would expect from a "mystery plant," even if there were a red blush to the claws (many of my named, more pastel-blooming plants have that red blush as well). Was it a surprise?

Sun--if you read this--thanks for your kind comments on my flower (singular LOL). Yes, proud addict here--I am SO out of space!! Oh boy!

Greg and Bill, thanks for the comments. Wish I could take credit for spotting the red, but unfortunately nothing that unique would ever make it into a nursery where I live.

It was actually a seedling from a friend who was "reducing inventory", and I'm lucky to have gotten it. I believe it was grown from a pack of mixed mystery seeds, probably Thai. It does have reddish new claws and tips but not as dark as you'd expect for such a deep red flower.
