Fall Planting of Snow-On-The-Mountain?

I would like to plant some snow-on-the-mountain (Aegopodium podagraria 'Variegatum') ground cover, but I don't know if this can be done at this time of year. I am in Atlanta, GA, so it will be quite a while until we have consistent, freezing temperatures. Any information and advice will be greatly appreciated.

I think you'll have success if you really want to grow this. You can't kill it so I don't see how there could be a wrong time of the year to mess with it. Give it a spot of its' own because it forms a carpet like grass, and become completely enmeshed with any other plants you try to grow with it.

i dont understand.. are you dividing plants.. or trying to root them ...

presuming dividing.. just do it.. if you figure out a way to kill the stuff.. lets us know ...

wait a minute.. there are multiple plants with this common name.. care to ID the one you are talking about??? .. i am going to bet its not the one i am thinking about ....

oh come on.. next time start with the picture it is not bishops weed . of which i agree with all the dittos above.. and it is not what i know as snow on the mountain ... which is not really all that big a problem .... which i now find out what i had was snow in the summer.. go figure on that ...Cerastium tomentosum .. so ignore all that part. . lol .. but your pic looks like a vinca .... and not bishops weed ... which in about a hundred years might be invasive.. but i doubt it.. though i wouldnt leave it on the edge of the grass ... you know how it goes.. cant get it to thrive anywhere.. then it gets in the grass and goes nuts.. lol ... ken

Invasive seems to be a discovery word and over used. If you tend to your yard or garden one would be so surprised by what beauty so-called invasive plants can be with just a little care. Plants normally can be trained to be a beautiful sight no matters what kind. I like to stay away from cactus and thorn type plants yet they are even trainable and beauties. I have a pasture behind my house full of native and non-native plants and it is interesting what you can gather to make your yard/garden gorgeous. Store bought can be more tragic and pricey even though there are some beautiful plants. I am in West Texas and plants not only survive to live but struggle due to the wild swings in winds, droughts and excessive temperature swings. So where you might live is more of a blessing than you might realize. Go on the wild side and enjoy your gardening efforts don't be afraid but love. Make Love not War!!

cjsm, thank you so much for the follow-up. I am hearing rather conflicting messages from different people though - my local nursery people told me to keep on watering, since this is a new tree and the root system is not well-developed yet. On the other hand, I hear what you are saying and the overwatering theory in clay soil (which I also have) definitely makes sense! I think I am going to stop watering it for a few days and see what happens. You know, it's hard when you see the leaves drooping in the strong afternoon sun and still not water it! At least it is getting cooler around here these days... BTW, cjsm, my tree was planted in a big planting hole on a slope, and I had plenty of cow manure and things amending the local clay soil, so I think I don't need to take it out to raise it more. I hope this does the trick! Thank you again for your info.

In general, peas can go 2 week after the first frost. So get you to about Nov. 10. You are very tight if planting now. Two or three weeks of harvest the most?

From what I've read, it's very invasive. I'm wanting to plant it under a tree where grass barely grows. You think I'll have success getting it to root this time of year and come back in the spring?

OMG .. one of the worst invasive weeds i have ever had the pleasure of trying to kill.. bishops weed ...

buy it.. run it over with the car.. leave it one the driveway for a month.. then sweep it up and plant whats left.. and in a few years.. you will be wishing you never saw the stuff before in your life ... lol ...

you better have a very independent.. confined space .. as this is not a plant friendly to inter-planting with other things ....

at the old house.. i would have paid you .... to come dig it out..

regardless.. what ever makes you happy.. good for you.. knock yourself out .. i cant believe the prices they are asking for it ...

do you have any garden friends who would be willing to give you a wheelbarrow full??? ... and pay you ...

you might want to flip over to the perennial forum.. and ask about other peeps thoughts about the plant.. if you desire some additional information ...

but no matter what you hear .. you go for it .. if that is your wish ... dont let the nattering nabobs of negativity [i do include myself in that group for this plant] ... distract you from your goal .... just go after that goal with full knowledge ...

When someone says Aegopodium podagraria 'Variegatum', there's no question there's a bandit in our midst. In addition to what I said, I wanted to say what Ken did, but I held back...

If the tree is not surrounded by concrete or asphalt, I wouldn't use this as my grass-won't-grow solution. Would love to offer some better alternatives if you'd like to hear them, now that I know more about what's going on.

What kind of tree is it? Is there any kind of barrier between the no-grass space under the tree and the good part of the lawn? Is there enough space to walk around under the tree, or are there low limbs?
