Oakes Daylilies

I ordered from Oakes for the first time this year. I was amazed at the number of fans I received. Each daylily had at least 4-5 fans. I also received 2 free daylilies. All were in excellent condition. I will, most certainly, order from them again. I was very pleased.

I think Oakes is one of the best sources for gardeners who are not hard-core daylily collectors but want large healthy plants of tried & true varieties. It is not the place to go for the latest in hybridization, but they really do send the biggest plants.

Their customer service is great, too. Last year I decided I wanted to identify all the daylilies I had purchased over the years, some of which I had lost the tags to. I wrote them, and they were able to tell me everything I had bought from them 6-8 years ago!

Natalie, I have a pretty long list and have been very happy with all of the ones I'm listing. Some are better than others about responding to e-mails but I've never been disappointed in the plants. Sheep Run, Valley of the Daylilies, Cheryl's Daylilies, His Glories, Daylilies by the Pond, Farmhouse, Marietta's, Earlybird, Soules, Joiners, Sunshine Hollow, Crossborder Daylilies, Hoot Owl Hollow, Peace on Earth, Tranquil Lake, Sunset Meadows, Ashwood, Wynn's. I have some dls coming this spring from some I've never ordered from before but the communication has been absolutely great and I have no doubt the plants will be the same. They are Cottage Gardens, Daylilies, Etc., Blue Ridge, Shady Rest, Moon Shadow Gardens, Seawrights, Slightly Different Nursery and gary Schabens (senior moment - I can' think of the name). There are a couple of smaller hybridizers I've ordered from who seem to be terrific and generous people. I plan to try Dancing Daylilies later. There are a couple I haven't been pleased with because of communication problems but I'll try to be kind and not mention names. If I had bunches of money I'd be ordering more from some of the better known hybridizers this spring but retirement income only goes so far. Hope this helps. DD

I don't know of a pink one off hand, but I've ordered from Vivaces Nordiques last year and was very happy with their daylilies. They have a huge selection and are out of Quebec so they should be quite hardy too. Good luck, Laurie Here is a link that might be useful: Vivaces Nordiques

Daveinva , Sounds like you are really pleased with your purchases and that is as it should be . Your pics are lovely. I have not always been pleased with purchases and now always research different websites for the best price on a daylily and I am always astounded when I see a seller asking $30 for daylily like El Desperado that is 35 years old. Most daylilies that age are no more than $8 here in Canada . It is not so hard to lose an $8 daylily although that irks me enough but to pay huge bucks only to have the daylily not be quite what it was made out to be really really irks me . When I started out I did pay what to me was really big bucks for 2 daylilies . Ange'ls Smile cost me the most, I dont even want to say how much. I still have it but it is just a so so daylily here . Mapping Carolina the next top dollar amount . Loved it and had to have it . Paid way too much for it and It is toast now, gone the way of the dodo bird. Don't get me wrong , I am always tempted but I simply refuse to pay big bucks for something that may or may not live, not anymore. I have discovered a few sites that are asking really unreasonable prices for different older cultivars. Those sites I just move on from because I know that I can find it elsewhere for much less and I seem to always find other cultivars on that same site that I would like to add to my gardens so placing a decent order is not a problem . All that being said though, if you have found a site that has daylilies that please you and can provide the plants you want at a price you are willing to pay , that is worth it's weight in gold.

Being a South Florida transplant myself, I didn't know much about daylilies when I placed an order with Oakes last year. They were very helpful by guiding me to choose evergreen and/or semi-evergreen varieties that would perform well in Central Florida. The plants were *large*, and I had a nice show of flowers that first summer. They continue to do well, and I wouldn't hesitate to order from Oakes again.

This place is wonderful when it comes to lilies. I have ordered from them several times and each time the lilies each had five or six fans. Have also visited them for the festival twice and it was great. If you live anywhere near Corryton Tenn. you need to visit them. Their customer service is also great. They are extremely friendly people.

I previously ordered from Wild, and after seeing a photo of the size of plants on the Oakes website, ordered from them. Imagine my surprise when the plants that arrived were small. I did, however, get four fans comprising each "plant" and a bonus of equal size. I was a bit disappointed as I passed over a sale on those very daylilies at Wilds to buy what I thought would be big, more expensive plants from Oakes - I'm not that patient a gardener and prefer having big impact quickly, rather than letting something grow for years before seeing results. That said, all the plants have taken off and are growing beautifully. Honestly, I'm undecided on whether or not to buy from this company again. If I do, it will probably be during a sale and with lower expectations.

I have generally gotten very large plants from Oakes. I will say that size varies somewhat with the cultivar. For one, some plants just have bigger fans than others, and for another, some probably increase faster than others, thus they are able to send more fans. I have gotten anywhere from 4 to 8 fans on individual plants. Plus they always send bonus plants.
