Kapalua Changing Colors.. Again!!! YEA!!!

Just wanted to show you another picture from my Kapalua!!

Yes, Barb!! Lol.. I was careful!!! Thought of you!!!

Had to take another picture., its more orange than the last pic and especially from the one last year.. It just keeps changing with the different color in each bloom that opens...

Worth the climb... ;-). Always careful!!!!

tomplum & mownie-Thanks for your insight and I'm pleased for several reasons. 1. It just may be something I'll manage. 2. It tells me that I was on the right track and didn't turn something I shouldn't have-which obviously could give me an entirely new group of things to blog about.....and the queue is HUGH already :):) Yes, that little brass threaded knob, both outside and inside, is almost impossible to both get my hand or a tool into and then I can only turn the knob 'maybe' 1/12 of a turn. 3. That the comment regarding disassembling the obstructions around the area would be both a last resort as well as cumbersome. I have a few times after 'sailor speaking' to the Jr JD have considered that option, but have keep at my original attempts in hopes of success. All who have responded have been great, ALL :). And thanks for pulling up the blog site to take a peek at the photos. For those of you who are mechanically literate I hope you will find that while reading it shaking your head and saying 'new meaning to the word stupid' as well be assumed when I succeed. Again, Thanks and I'll report if I am successful.

Larissa, the time for Hippeastrum seeds to sprout varies considerably! As an example, I planted an entire 72 cell flat last spring with a variety of seeds. Each row had a different selfing or cross. I noticed sprouts on some within a few weeks, while others took over a month to finally begin. Be patient! If you're floating the seeds in water, don't dump them until at least 2 or 3 months have passed without seeing any sprouts... maybe longer! Due to the delicate nature of the tiny sprouts, and the necessary transition from water to soil, I've abandoned the flotation method of sprouting Hippeastrum seeds. I find it much easier to start them in a regular peat based potting mix, and then move them into a more porous medium after they've outgrown their cell packs and require a bump in container size. For me, this just works better and is easier. In spring, I've got a ton of seeds to start and plants to move around and bump to larger pots... so, for me, starting a flat of Hippeastrum seeds along with all the other flats of seeds I start just makes more sense. For those who have the time and space, the flotation method might be easier. It is a good way to test for viable seeds, though.

Tom, those are beautiful!!!it is filling the arbor really nice. Bernie, I see that you master the photobucket and I can see some beautiful tomatoes. I already divided the tomatoes by taste, Willy likes black tomatoes and I made him black tomato salsa. Cheryl likes the fruity ones and I made her yellow and orange tomato salsa. And me, I like them all except very few. The jetsetters that I have were in the middle of the garden. About sun dry tomatoes in the sun I don't think is a good idea because of the humidity and the bugs, I used to do that in Arizona with apricots. You can roast them in the oven at the lowest temperatures for a few hours and they are even better, you can also add anything you like like spices, salt, pepper, herbs, olive oil, balsamic vinegar. Direct sunlight would indeed be too much right now, but start with full shade or overcast days, eventually dappled sunlight and then short periods of direct sun, under your supervision. There are too many variables to tell you how often to water exactly, but for that plant and container size, every 24h sound like too much. What is important is that you have drainage holes and that the potting mix itself drains well and fast. It is best to water infrequently, but deeply. Ok, I'll venture a guess anyway and say every 4-5 days or so in your case. You'll get a feel for it soon enough. It's OK if the plant starts to slightly wilt from thirst, but no more and the top of the mix should be fairly dry.

Absolutely beautiful Laura! I can only imagine how pretty it is in person. I especially love the orange plumeria. Thankfully JJ Orange will bloom soon :)

Love that color. I haven't seen that one before, not even in Hawaii! I'd love to get a cutting if you can spare it. I'm going to be in VA Beach in early October when my daughter has her baby. So I may have to come visit you.

Hi Doug.. It's only for Kapalua.. I wouldn't t be dragging the ladder back and forth.. ;-). The other day, I asked my son to set up the ladder again.
He is starting to get the same " eye roll" as my hubby.. Guess ill have to buy him some eye drops too!! ;-)

You have a great eye , yes there is another inflo behind the one blooming . I had to really look hard to see that one in the picture. Great eyes!! Lol!!! I knew it was there, but i am so surprised it was visible...
