Please diagnose (includes picture)

The leaves on my sweet banana plants are turning yellow, developing brown spots, curling, and falling off. The problem is primarily affecting the lower leaves. Despite this, the new leaves look normal, and there are some flowers on the plants. This problem is also affecting my hot banana plants but to a lesser extent. All the other pepper plants in the garden appear healthy so I don't think the problem is related to fertilizing or watering. Please help me diagnose the problem and decide how to treat it. I'd prefer to pull out these plants than to have the problem affect all my other plants.

Your link to the pic gives an error message 'Page Cannot Be Displayed"

I get normal yellow/drop on oldest lower leaves too...a normal process.

Sorry to hear about your BER problem. That's alot of rot on one tomato. I have a bunch of tomato plants this year and they all have set fruit. I do have one plant that is getting BER. As soon as I notice it, I get rid of the tomato.......don't want to waste any plant energy on bad tomatoes. As soon as I see a little spot of BER I yank it. So far on my one bad plant, every tomato has had a BER problem. Funny, I can't figure out why, and I haven't had a BER problem in the past. I added 'a little' lime and some gypsum to the soil, and I'm not going to water it until it really needs it, and let's see what happens. I do have one plant in a two 5 gal bucket SWC, and that plant is doing really well. It's really big, with dark green super leaves, and has a few tomatoes on it. The reservoir probably holds about a gallon, and it needs filling every couple of days due to the plants size, and all the hot dry weather we have been having lately.

Pruning for noobies - help/advice please. Pictures Included

I like the sprawling shape also. It's something few landscapes have and it does fit in its spot. Banker74, when pruning there are considerations about branches with a tight "V" like crotch angle compared to the trunk. In the midwest Bradford Pears get those in groups of 3 and split apart when full of leaves in our thunderstorms. Another thing to look for are two branches which seriously rub together. Eventually funny things will happen with their bark either rubbing through, the branches no longer being able to sway in the wind, or just one out competing the other. Really I like your tree. As you do I also I would leave it alone for the most part. Like Ken said, put up a close up of the leaves and bark and someone on here will figure out exactly what kind of tree you have. Try to get a few leaves or buds in the picture so folks can see if they're arranged opposite or alternate and all that.

As the dried out leaf tips are concentrated in one part of the leaf, it probably was sun damage. Dried leaf tips all over a frond usually mean the roots went too dry for a period, and can be trimmed off, as it looks like all the other leaf tips have been trimmed off to groom it at some point. This species loves lots of water, in general, and will accomodate to full sun here in California conditions if done slowly by degrees to avoid burning the foliage.

I'm not an expert, but I'm afraid it's bacterial leaf spot. Unfortunately, none of the stores in my area carries Serenade. Unless someone has a better idea, I think I'll try copper.

i still cant see the link i had a recent bout with bls so i could tell ya i picked all of the infected leaves off (it was only on two plants but one had it on almost every leaf) it has medium spots with dark eges heres a pick

heres what i did for it hope this plant comes back

Bacterial leaf spot to be sure. I've become an expert on it this year. D0 not give up hope. I've finally started winning the battle after beginning a schedule of spraying with copper every 6 days on the dot. Spray right after the sun quits shining on them and the leaves have cooled off. Make sure you completely drench the bottom and top of the leaves, stems and blossoms. Heck, I ever spray the dirt around them. I pick off all of the leaves that begin to turn yellow, or that will come of with an easy pull. I'm going to continue for another month like this and then see how they do. I've been trying to find Maneb to go with it locally but I think I'll end up ordering it.

What ever you do, do not mess with the leaves when they are wet with dew or rain. Do not touch any non-diseased plants after you mess with the BLS. I think this contributed to the rapid spread that I had.

3-4 weeks ago I had no blossoms and most of the plants were in their death throws. I'm now picking sweet and hot bananas, jalepenos, chilies, etc. The only things that I don't think will make it are my red, yellow and green bells. I planted all of my peppers about 3 weeks too early and the bells have suffered the worst with stunting and the disease.
