Landscape business evolution,,, when to take it to the next step?

I'm working at a starbucks in an upscale neighborhood, and lately with the 'grounds for your garden' bucket, I've posted some pics of my garden, and people really respond to them, and I've got many calls asking me to do landscapes for them... all have offered to pay me to do so, and I do some landscape work, but I'm at my limit, maintaining my job at starbucks (for the benefits) and my existing clients. I was wondering when I should take it to the next level, actually saying by to starbucks, and going all out in the landscape business? How do I know when to leave... or is there really no good time... and I should just jump in? I will always be able to work at starbucks, because I would give my two weeks, and all.. but I guess I'm just uncomfortable not having medical benefits. Should I just jump in? I would be able to make way more money long term, or... I could fall flat on my face... I don't know I don't have many bills, and now would be the best time to do it no kids, or anything...

Any help will be apreciated

I can't answer your question ...

and I have worked all my life in the landscape industry ... currently in my home I have a coffee bar ... it's fun and I love coffee .. I sit and drink espesso and dream of openning a coffee shop ! LOL

I dream of getting out of the green industry you at the same time want in LOL ... that's life... very funny.

I don't know anything about you but here are some of my thoughts and reflections that I can offer.

"I could fall flat on my face"

Yes .. you could .. or you could work for a decade or so and then find out you never really made enough money .. maybe enough to pay your bills but not enough to cover retirement .. health care .. a future family.

So ... you say :

"I would be able to make way more money long term"

Are you really sure about this ??? Coffee is BIG business and you already work for one of the biggest companies in the world. Why not coffee ?? Coffee is a huge business.

"Should I just jump in?"

No ... the landscape business is complex ... and a very expensive business to run ... honestly ... if you can't see yourself clearing 100 grand a year in the first three years of your business then given that you are really qualified to be in the business your better off looking for a job in the industry.

Starbucks NEVER just opens a new store ... they know when and where to open the next store .. YOU need the same kind of info before entering the landscape matket in your area ... DON'T JUST WING IT.

Well not really ... in time your personal expenses will most likely grow and if you return to the coffee industry you will have more landscape experience and less coffee experience ... so do you really want to start again at that level ? Jumping ships can get costly .. better to plot a steady course ... one way or the other .. make a choice.

That's a very good place to be BUT you perhaps someday you will have those things and they are expensive ... can YOU make that in the landscape industry ... it can be made but by YOU not just anyone and you have to make it year after year. Even giant companies like Starbucks can't be consistent with profits and when they are look what backing they have behind them ... not just money .. but people power ... expertise ... you included.

Yeah .. dentist love to point to the visa / master card sign when you say " Can I pay monthly ??" ... What about a carreer in landscaping ? Don't underestimate employment .. it has it's benafits too.

Well .. no one knows that but you ... go sit for a while and feel what you want .. don't let fear or dollar signs ( big or small ) run your life. Look ahead .. think "what if?" .. Who are the big money earners in the coffee industry ? In the landscape industry ? How can you fit in to these industries ? There is no shortage of standard landscapers ... believe me ... I don't see anyone at Starbicks complaining about $2 to $5.00 cups of coffee .. but I have heard ALL the complaints about the cost of landscaping.

VERY smart business consultants have said that often we think the best opportunity is elsewhere when often it is where we are at the momement.

Myself ... I'd rather be off to the mountains of Brazil to cup rare coffee .. if I had to do it all over again LOL ... or so I think ? LOL

It's definitely an unusual structure and concealing some of the foundation will help. I see a tree in the ground and a tree in a pot. I think I'd have trees positioned somewhat to either side of the house ... to the left, out of this view, or to the right, in the approximate location of the #4 I've placed on the ground where there is possibly only room for a flowering tree. (There might be room for a larger tree at the left.) But a tree in the ground where you have it ... I just can't see how its ultimate conclusion is a good outcome. It would completely block the windows and diminish the view to a major architectural feature. If the one in the pot is being considered in that location, I'd nix it, too. It's not going to enhance the view to the entrance. 1. At the left side, shrubbery that conceals the bulk of this wall would help the house look nestled in. I'd want something loose and shaggy as opposed to tight and sheared. The green line I drew under the windows represents the tallest I'd want. The drawn shrubs would be the shortest. If it was my house I might even consider something like a grove of sumac. You'd need a plant that topped out at a specific height as you wouldn't want to get involved in regularly trimming the height to keep it in bounds. Also, I think the stone border you have is too tight in that area. You need a plant with height and with that comes width which the border must accommodate. 2. The big brick monolith would look good coming out of a big soft nest so it's screaming Miscanthus to me. Pick the height and style that suits. 3. The shrub you already have in that area looks pretty good to me. Fill in the holes with more of it to create a hedge. It looks like it might be Nandina. That's perfect. Or something like that. 4. Seasonal color--either perennial or annual or a combination--and lots of it. You might want or need more, but this is what I'd consider the basics.

I recently had a neighbor approach me as I was fixing some rotted siding on my garage. This is the neighbor whose lawn is saturated with creeping charlie. He asked, hey with all the money you are putting into this house, are you planning on staying here awhile? First, the repairs we were making weren't for cosmetic purposes, they were more functional. I'd assumed, "all the money" meant all the landscaping we've done ourselves. I love my yard, and I regret not getting started on it sooner when we purchased our home in 2004, we waited a few years and focused on the interior, with no relaxing, private, soothing patio to relax on. But, oh, today, we can enjoy sitting on our patio on our very small lot, with privacy from our neighbors. It's nice, and would I love to purchase a home with the landscaping already done? You bet, but I don't regret that I had to do it myself, because now I'm hooked and I love what I've learned - gardening and landscaping is very therapeutic to me. I've also wondered how much is too much, but I've been told by neighbors that I'm their inspiration, and we have people stopping at the front of our house to view our property from time to time, so we are heading in the right direction, especially as plants begin to mature. I have a small back yard, and yet in my rear yard I have a poplar tree (soon to be replaced), a mature lilac shrub, a hedge of privets, 2 smokebush trees/shrubs, a green giant thuja, an emerald green thuja, 5 purple leaf sand cherries, a serviceberry, a red japanese maple, a heptacodium, and a katsura willow tree, among various perennials, vines, and evergreen and deciduous shrubs. I'm thinking of adding a degroots spire and replacing the poplar with a dogwood or magnolia. The placement for each works, and creates a nice lush private space for us. I have run out of planting space, but I don't intend to lose more lawn, so now it's just waiting for everything to reach maturity and a matter of enjoying what we created. As long as you are comfortable in your own space, that's all that matters. There are a couple homes that we see on our walks in the neighborhood, with the front lawn completely over done in an awkward cottage style. There's nothing wrong with the style, but I think when homes like that are wedged between other homes with more open or formal landscaping, it looks odd and out of place. I feel sorry for the immediate neighbors. In my opinion when all you see is the landscaping from the curb and not the house, that's when you've gone overboard. I dread the day we sell our home and someone who doesn't appreciate what we've done lives here. We joke about it sometimes. But, I've recently heard from some new owners in the neighborhood that others talk about the work we've done on the house with the "striped awnings", so it's nice to hear when you've invested so much sweat into improving it and making it your own. I don't care if anyone thinks we've put too much money into our house. We didn't buy to flip it, and I don't ask everyone else how they spend their money.

Zoning and the Township Solicitor (attorney) are the ones to pursue this situation not you with a private attorney. The landscaper as the business owner is responsible for compliance including but not limited to Land Use (residential, commercial) compliance. We had the same thing happen to us. Landscaper moved in next door seven years ago. He immediately erected a 10'W 24'L 14.5' H shed with an overhead garage door next to his house abutting our property. He turned it into a small engine repair shop and stored his equipment there out of season as well as all over his lawn during the season. Trucks, trailers, employees in and out all the time, shaping shrubbery, dumping containers, brush, debris, snow plow, etc in the rear yard. Had large tree trunks delivered in a two-story dump truck and slices of tree trunks delivered by a tree service where he would cut them up with a chain saw and log splitter then created a fence 25' long and seven feet high in front of our living room window and threw wood all over our property. The neighbors on the other side complained and when their home was unfortunately foreclosed, landscaper went all out with full-blown operation of the business. Because the "shed" required a variance and could not be located within 20' of another structure, we were able to appear before the Zoning Board with our attorney and present our evidence of commercial activities which put a stop to it. We had to hire an attorney because the snake neighbor scheduled the variance hearing during our January vacation. I would band together with other neighbors and document the landscaper's activities then approach the Zoning Officer again. You can all also simply show up at the Zoning Board meeting and state your concerns and case during the public comment period at the end of each meeting. There is usually a time limit of five minutes per person. Best wishes and keep us updated.

Jackie, your photos and suggestions are wonderful, however I fear that I have neither the space or the funds for a fence anywhere close to as lovely as yours. I have about a 13 ft. deep space between the sidewalk and a non-paved walking path that runs parallel to my house & the sidewalk, which I use daily to get from the driveway to the front door & to go from my front to the back yard. Also, my house is on a corner lot, and so if I added fencing to this area I would have to do the whole front and side as well, which is just too much of an expense for me to take on. A yard and fence like yours is one I dream of having at some point in my life, but right now it seems I'll have to get creative with my 13 ft deep yard and my non-fence. I have a little more space in the back yard, so I will be planting further back from the sidewalk there, and I'm thinking I might have to save my bigger teas for that space and find something a little easier to control for this area, maybe some of the Kordes roses I joust ordered would do nicely there.. ( I'm awful, I order roses not when I know where they will go, but when I find nice healthy types I like, so not what I should do!) Here is a photo from another angle, excuse the mess, I'm currently in the middle of adding a river rock boarder to my flower beds, and the bed in the is photo is in desperate need of weeding as well..

Thanks for the input... I'm thinking I'll do two things, Stay at *$s, and... raise my landscaping prices (for new customers) that way I limit my customer base, make more money, be more 'comfortable' all that with my 'perks' so to speak from my job... who knows... maybe I'll be retiring a starbucks employee? I don't think they could really ever pay me as much as I want to make ultimately though... so I'll have to start some part time business...

Well, I'm not a professional landscaper but I'm a designer and I work with companies to develop their Corporate Identity, website, marketing plan, and such to get their business off the ground. I started my own company from the ground up and I had to deal with much of the same circumstances as you. Here's my advice:

1) Use your current job to leverage your next one - you're already doing that, but I'm sure you can take it to the next level. If you don't have a website, get one immediately. It is the cheapest and most cost effective way to market yourself. It DOES NOT need to be fancy. But it needs to be informative and professional. It immediately says to potential clients that you are not someone who does this on the side (even if that's the case).

2) Get business cards. With your website up, you now have a passive way to market yourself (ie - people can view your site on their own time, without you "selling" to them). Give them a business card and they can remember it much better and once again enforces the fact that you don't just do this on the side (even though you might).

3) Testimonials - Call or email all your old clients and get a testimonial from them. Put these up on your website. If one or two REALLY like what you've done, ask if you can use them as a reference. Word of mouth is essential in my opinion for a startup company. Testimonials (from real people!) are a close second.

4) Photography - if you are shooting your work yourself (and you're not a photographer) get a professional to do it. It will make a world of difference. Give them free coffee if you can't afford it. Landscape their house for free. Use this technique for a professional site. You can tell people you do great work, but you don't have to say anything if they can see it.

You mention that you want to raise your rates and I agree with that if you have too much work/too little time. By having business cards printed, a website built, professional photos, etc. you will appear more professional hopefully justifying a rate increase. It will also greatly help spread your services around by word of mouth if someone can say "oh this guy did my yard - go to www.whatever.com".

Now, because I do this for a living I would always recommend getting these services done by a professional agency, not your cousin, not your friend who knows how do do a site. It will be money well spent. THEY DO THIS FOR A LIVING. Besides, you should be able to get that money BACK in one or two jobs. That said, I also know how little money someone wants to spend when starting out. So they go to their cousin or friend. That decision is up to you...

Now the landscape part is up to you...

Landscape Evolution,,, I like that.

One image comes to mind. It is that one showing the line of our ancestors from ape to modern man. I believe that where you are standing in that line at the time you take the plunge is going to have a lot to do with how far you will likely further evolve (in the landscape world).

It is very easy to move latterally to perform for yourself in the same manner which you performed for others. If you mow lawns, deal with customers, and maintain the equipment, you can probably do fairly well in the mowing business. If you dig holes and labor all day, it might not translate well to designing and selling landscapes.

It is like climbing up a sky scraper. You can take the stairs on your own, or you can ride up the elevator with someone. Whatever floor you step off on, you can walk around on with little effort and not have to do any climbing. If you want to be on a higher floor, you could have ridden the elevator longer, but now you have to take the stairs the rest of the way. Don't leave yourself too much climbing when you get off the elevator. No one is telling you that one niche is less worthy than another, but that when you go on your own, it is hard to change from the niche you enter into. So, be secure with the niche you enter into, or wait until your ready for the one you really want.
