How do windmills transplant bare root?

I am considering ordering a windmill palm through the mail, but I've been told by the seller that it is shipped bare root. I know that for some palms bare root is very risky. Is it as risky with windmill palms? Would I be able to plant it directly in the ground when I receive it or should I plant it in a pot for a season after recieving it? Does it matter? Robustas and palmettos do ok bare root, just curious if anybody knows about windmills. Thanks

I have bought Trachycarpus bare root- and have not had any problems- just put in a good soil mix immediately-and keep moist the first month or so.

I think the biggest problem would be cold weather during shiping,otherwise some root stimulator or superthrive should do the trick and the warmer the roots are after planting the better.I think going in the ground now would shock it.

So actually I have 3 to plant and I just took a look at the roots of each. One was so root bound that the roots were a solid mass of very fine hairs. The plant looked like it came out of a pot 4" wide and about 10" deep, almost like a tube of roots. I had to break up the mass a little and chunks of the stuff came off in my hand. I'm assuming that's a good thing. So I broke off a bunch of the stuff and reduced the mass of roots to about 1/2. I've got them soaking in water now and will go back out and pot them in a little while. It's amazing how few real looking roots there are on a small blueberry bush.

Actually I have 3 now. 2 more came today. I have a Sweetcrisp, and the other 2 are a Patriot and I'm ashamed to admit it....yes...a KaBluey from Gurneys. I had a $50 credit from Gurneys, figured 'what the heck' and decided to use it. I found out that the KaBluey, even though the name is silly, is A-257 selected at the University of Arkansas, so I'm optimistic that it will do well. I just took a look at the roots of each. The KaBluey looks healthy but was so root bound that the roots were a solid mass of very fine hairs. The plant looked like it came out of a pot 4" wide and about 10" deep. Thanks bboy - good article. Interesting that one of the big name brands of transplanter solution contains 15% phosphate which this article suggests should be avoided! Guess I'll save my money and do without it...

80 isnt bad... how cool will it get at night??? a recovery period is the key .... not the peak temp at 4 in the afternoon in October ... i would probably just plant them.. they are just arbs.. not some foo foo exotic .... otherwise.. moisten some potting media... and pot the whole wad together in one pot ... and keep them as cool as possible.. and never let the pot itself be in sun ... no need to pot individually.. you are just HOLDING THEM OVER .... and if there is an extreme day or two while potted ... put them in the cool basement.. but not for 2 weeks... no pail of water nonsense for more than a day ..... they are not aquatics ... will check back in tomorrow morn ... ken ps: any idea how to plant them.. ??? native soil.. etc????

Thanks guys. I wouldn't purchase it until the spring, so cold weather shouldn't be an issue. I'm not even sure if I could get it in the ground now if I tried, it might be frozen LOL. Plus since Wednesday we got a foot of snow total.

Yea,I think this winter wants to be even worse than last year,I just hope it ends earlier and we have a nice warm spring!!!it looks like our first sub-zero weather is coming in this weekend, Ouch

I ordered two Windmill Palms in October 2007 bare root and they stayed outside for two days with lows going to 30 both nights. Then in February 2008 I order two more and they were shipped in some of the coldest weather last year. They were sent to Lexington, Kentucky where I was living at the time.
