Well, I grow them, but nothing I have is that size, wish they were as they are quite valuable, but my suggestion would be to leave the snow now and when temps rise above freezing remove it. Snow will actually insulate plants from the colder freezing temps., in fact, I have seen snow actually save a palm or two from freezing to death. Maybe someone else can give more and better advise, but that is my thought. They are cold hardy but like to be dry for sure. Good luck!

I would keep the spear (growth point) dry. When It stays above freezing for a good amount of time, spray it with a fungicide/bactericide.

I have one in the ground about the same size as yours. I have a just put clear plastic over it to keep it dry. I saw one guy north of me has a rostrata about the same size and it made it through winter fine but got crown rot in the spring when it started to thaw and get rained on. To much moisture.

I would appreciate it if someone could post a pic of rostrata seeds i think i got ripped off.

topher, they are very small,very hard, very black, flat and not always uniform in size, kind of like tiny flat black rocks. I have found them to be inconsistant when germinating but only have used one suplier thus far. I may have 35 out of 150 seeds germinate to date.

Topher I tried sand mixed with peat. I've tried peat in a baggie. Best I have done is potting mix with sand 50/50 and seeded in 36 count cell trays and left on my shadad patio in mid to late spring. I think the thing with these is to variate the heat like you do bananas, meaning maybe 16 hrs 80 to 85 and then down 8 hrs. to 65 to 70 deg. They've been tough ones for me. You might try raising the humidity with a cover too. Like I sais earlier, I'm not sure I have fresh seed either. Plan to try another source this next year.Maybe someone here has it all figured out and can assist with them. Merry Christmas to everyone!

I have germinated a couple before The temp has to be constantly around 85f-90f. They germinated for me in 3 1/2 weeks.

all mine have rotted :(
but since i just had surgery i may try some more thanks guys !

Thanks for all the responses. It looks like we're gonna be thawing out the next several days, so I swept the snow away from the base yesterday morning. It only got a little snow in the crown, but that has since melted and dried. Luckily I have it planted right up against a brick wall underneath an overhang, so it really doesn't get rained on unless we have strong winds blowing the rain.
