Yucca Question

Hello there well Im new to gowing yucca from seed and I was woundering how long they germinate and if they are fast growers. I soaked them for 24 hours like the instructions said and sowed them 1/4" inch deep and that was on the 19th of april and nothing yet three of them in little mini green houses with litte moisture every week just to keep moist not wet. So im getting inpatient and scared two more seeds with a nail file and they are soaking right now. just woundering how long they will take to germinate. thanks We have alot here in Zuni NM all over the place but not these type of species they are spanish daggers or Spanich bayontte. well get at me if you can

Yucca seeds don't require any pre-treatment such as scarification or soaking. They just need to sit on top of a moist soil with warm temps. They germinate erratically though, so I could not tell you how soon to expect something.

I've had good luck with the two species I've tried, Yucca elata, the tall soaptree yucca; and Yucca whipplei, a California species with a huge thick flowering stalk.

As far as speed of growth, with direct seeding in the ground you can expect a nice rounded plant with leaves about 18 inches tall after 2 or 3 years. It must take many many years to form a nice trunk on a soaptree yucca. In pots in a greenhouse with fertilizer, etc... you can probably get better growth than this I imagine.

Hey thanks alot yeah so the one i sowed 1/4" deep it is germanationg good something is comming out. of the seed i was so curious and kinda moved the soil and saw that something was sticking out of the seed. so yeah they are getting ready to sprout out soon i hope. hahaha Im so inpatient when it comes to planting from seeds. Yeah and the other 4 arnt budgging so i guess ill have to wait on those. but thanks for the infromation. Cant wait for them to grow up to be 18 inches tall.

Toni - No, they certainly do not need to be air-layered...at least none of mine do. When they get gangly, I chop them up and put into new pots. I have a soft-leaf yucca that I've had nearly 30 years and have started well over 20 plants from it...can't find homes for them anymore, everyone now has one! This year when I trim, I will be plopping them down in the greenbelt behind the house! Jo

Hi Tom, Hard to say...I've had mine for about 3 years, and it has grown little in that time, so since I find Yuccas grow faster when watered more, maybe I'm just not watering it enough and it does indeed want more water than I'm giving it? I know they do well in the valley elsewhere - the DBG has a whole bed of them growing. Mine is just in the ground in my garden - it gets 2-3 hrs of direct sunlight, but filtered sun after that. I'd give it a full year to establish itself. Obviously it won't need water for quite a while with all the rain we've been having. About an inch a week would be about right (one deep watering) but you'd probably want to check the soil first by digging down a few inches to see if it really does need additional water. Larry

Check with Joe at Triple Oaks Nursery in Franklin. It may be a little off the beaten path for you in south central NJ., but he has a great selection of all sorts of palms, camellias, and overall unique not run of the mill things. I don't remember seeing trunking yuccas for sale but I could be wrong. He has his own message board so you can post and ask him. Regardless, it's worth a trip just because of the great selection. I've seen taller rostratas and other trunking yuccas in that area so they are getting them from somewhere. If anybody would know, Joe or Jim Kelly would know. Jim is a regular poster on the NE palm board. Great guy even though he roots for crappy teams that never win anything significant (hope he sees this). Also as far as yucca boards go, the Yucca Yucca board is the only one of significance although it has been dead lately.
