August Plumie Gatherings/Events in So Cal?

Hey Everyone,

Not sure if this is possible, or if I'm being too selfish, but I'd like to propose a gathering or maybe get input as to if there are any Plumeria type events in southern California during the last half of the month of August. I'm doing the whole wedding and honeymoon thing the first half of the month, but the second half is pretty open. :) It's really neat that alot of us put up pictures of ourselves, but I'd really love to do a hang-out session before I head back to teaching those "cheeky little whipper-snappers" (AKA junior high kids) in September. Anyone have any suggestions on this? This was actually my fiance's suggestion to "hang out with your plumie friends," and I'm running with it! We could just hang out and talk, bring plants/seeds/etc. to swap, or whatever! I'm in Cypress, which is Orange County. Where's everyone else, and what could be a central location?

sounds great, but sadly I live in the opposite direction. I live in the San Fernando Valley, about 20 plus miles north of Los Angeles. Orange Country is too far for me to come..dern

Rodney is right. Only the last meeting of the year is for members only (usually in October) At the OC Farm Supply, which I was at today, Chris Roy said he will have many products for great discounts and will go over what products are best for what. Chris is really knowledgeable and has a big collection of plumies himself. He told me he put Growmore potassium sulfate (0-0-50) on this plants at the end of last season and had no losses in the frost. He was colder than my house so I bought a bag. At the Sunday meeting at Murdy Park Clubhouse on Norma off Goldenwest just north of Warner there will be many rooted plants for sale and usually a number of outstanding door and raffle prizes. Last year I won a beautiful pink windmill and quite a few cuttings. There will also be some flowers on display to help with identification and usually books for sale too. Anyone is welcome. It was amazing how many plants were gone is such a short amount of time, as evidenced by the long checkout. I chatted up the sellers rather than stand in line, and got some great tips. The Peebles had a really informative display of seedlings' flowers from a single pod - every one was remarkably different. My little car was crammed with Mexican White, Samoan Fluff, a Celadine and Kaneohe Sunburst. One the way home, I stopped at the incredible 99 Market for whole snapper (it was suitably awesome on the grill, wrapped in banana leaves), and from the plant vendor in the market hall - a 5 gallon Michelia Alba. There were certainly some astonishing plants and flowers at the sale - well worth the drive... =^,,^=

For those in the San Diego area, I just thought Id mention that the Armstrong Nursery on Morena Blvd (by SeaWorld Drive/Tecolate Road) has some great tomato varieties. They started offering more obscure varieties last year (than you would usually find in a nursery around here) and the plants look great. I was just out there last weekend and they have Black Krim, Cherokee Purple, etc I picked up a Sungold plant there last year which did great in my garden. And I did same thing this year. I usually plant about ten varieties from seed and this year I decided not to do Sungold from seed because I could just pick up a plant from them thats about 18" high, healthy, and only pay $4 for it. Last year they also had Kelloggs Breakfast which did really well in my garden. I didnt see it last weekend but may do a drive-by tomorrow to see if its back.

I would be okay driving as well...it doesn't HAVE to be in Orange County! :)

Hello Mark: I'm in the Pasadena area and would luv to meet and learn from other So Cali Plummies! I'm willing to travel, but maybe if there were a more "central" location more would be willing to attend. Thanks for suggesting such a good idea. Gloria
