Can you truly get rid of scales
Comments (70)About pests with rasping/sucking mouth parts. I have 4.95 lbs of Marathon, which is a granular product that makes the insecticide imidacloprid systemically available via the root pathway - essentially the same product linked to a couple of posts upthread. I won't use it again because of the negative impact on root health I've witnessed when using the granular vehicle. A better and faster acting product (still employs imidacloprid as the active insecticide) is Bayer Advanced 3-In-1 Insect, Disease, and Mite Control. Used topically (outdoors) in the early morning and left in the shade for a day, it's absorbed into the plant much faster than soil drenches and granular products that use the root pathway. It also contains a very effective systemic fungicide (tebuconazole) that works efficaciously on most varieties of fungaluglies. If you're concerned about bees, don't apply to blooming plants. There is nothing wrong (from the plant's perspective) with using imidacloprid that's delivered via the root pathway; however, I've found the 1.47% liquid soil drench used for trees and shrubs, diluted to 1 teaspoon in a qt/liter of water to be far superior to any granular product I've used, for reasons mentioned. Soil drench. Al...See Morehow to get rid of cottony cusion scale on my knockouts?
Comments (3)bmh, I would not use oils during the hot summer months. If you cannot obtain control with pyrethrin, I would spray with Orthene. Orthene is unbelievably effective against scale. please note however it will also kill beneficial insects, so try to limit the spray just to the infested bush and avoid spraying surrounding areas. left untreated, scale can and will multiply and suck the life right out of your plant....See MoreGetting Rid of Cottony Cushion Scale on my Lime Tree
Comments (3)I used organicide while my plants were outside, before coming in for winter. It worked very well. I divided the gallon that I made between two trees (Bearrs lime and Pink Variegated Eureka). The plants did however smell bad for a good two weeks, and they had to go through two rain showers and a water down by me. The smell did disipate after a while. My only concern was that once they came in the trees dropped their leaves. I'm not sure if the organocide had anything to do with this, but it might have. So depending on how you feel about the product, go for it. I would use it again... only not indoors, and I would leave them out for about 3 weeks after spraying... oh, and I only sprayed once! I also have been using dishwashing liquid in water and spraying the trees everyday. This helps also....See MoreHelp!! I have Fishwort I can't get rid of
Comments (1)I wasn't sure what "fishwort" was but I found the latin name, Yikes, "houttuynia cordata" or chameleon plant is very, very difficult to eradicate. It's considered highly invasive and it's rhizomes will regrow if you toss them aside. Do a gardenweb search on "Houttuynia" or "chameleon plant." (Get a glass of wine 1st...and a box of tissue:) I once planted bishop's weed, not knowing what it was. I thought I'd never get rid of it! And I don't think it's as bad as fishwort. Reportedly it takes several treatments of Round-Up to kill it. Even if you could spray it. The only other alternative is to dig it out. I know, I know! Either way, it's a major task. BUT...IF you choose to use an herbicide you can wrap the plants in plastic trash bags to protect them from the spray....all the way to the bottom of the stems. I really don't know how many sprays it will take to do a complete kill. Then you might think it's dead and it might rear it's ugly head again. Another thing, if you use Round-Up don't get the pre-mixed stuff. Go for the "super concentrate." Make sure you spray on a very hot day when there's no wind. I'd also use a "spreader sticker" to help the spray adhere to the plant leaves. Read about it here; http://www.plant-care.com/1271-wetting-agents.html You can find it in most garden centers. BTW, the Chinese name for the plant means "smelly fish." I also found this on the web. http://gurneys.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_11050 I wish you luck. Here is a link that might be useful: Houttuynia Cordata...See Moretopher2006
