Roll call - Have the Japanese Beetles arrived at your house?
Comments (45)The JBs have arrive here. I have had a few on one of my young peach trees. I have had a few on my rose bushes. I see a few holes in my beans and cruciferous vegetable plants. But actually I have seen very few. I applied Milky Spore last year, but then it did not rain and I didn't water it down to well, so I doubt it took. I think it was the late spring that has kept down their numbers. They are a social bug and seem to gather in numbers after a few arrive and find it hospitable. I am spraying early to get rid of the few in hope that the many do not arrive....See MoreSouthern California Roll Call!!!
Comments (115)I have two sides going so far--lots of seedlings going in the areas that look bare. side 1 (this was the 1st side I did back in March): And this is side 2 (I had a bunch of herbs and potatoes but decided to go above ground with those (I just threw together the wood planters from scraps we had laying around-now ISO soil): I have corn, greens, beans, and a few other sprouts coming up--I threw the straw down (from when I cleared our side yard in May) to give them a bit of shade and extra water---this side gets like 6 hours of INTENSE sun this time of year (especially this year). I have some raspberries to plant in the back corner on side 2--I'd love to have a little berry patch. But through research I've found very few varieties grow in a 10a zone (this part is all new to me) Those retaining wall planters are my next big project but the dirt is so compacted I can't even dig---but I'm thinking of just top filling it after I pull everything...just can bring myself to get rid of all my aloe and succulents that grow up in the shade. I'd love to do something vertical... (Side 1) (Side 2) This is the first year I'm doing this---I pulled the existing shrubs (2 10 year old hibiscus, a 10 year old rosemary, among others) all by hand and turned the soil myself---my husband's around to help but it's mostly a project I've taken on myself. I'd like to get a bit more organized as far as what grows where and when, more vertical growth, etc...one thing at a time I suppose. I've shown you mine--who's showing theirs? (I apologize for any typos, I didn't proofread this)...See MoreTo Potager or Not to Potager....
Comments (14)It is so easy to get overwhelmed. Afterall, I have a full time job, and when I get home at night I have dinner to cook and housework to catch up on, and I do want so relaxation time... But I find that I get a renewed burst of energy when I have half an hour to garden. Here are my little tricks for staying on top of gardening.... 1. Prep Time. When dinner is simmering on the stove, I pour a glass of wine and go to the garden for 10 minutes to pull a couple of weeds, plant a pack of seeds, or pick a few veggies... as the season demands. This is when I notice what needs doing most after dinner. 2. After Dinner Drink. When the dishes are done, I set aside half an hour for watering or another project like pruning, digging in compost or planting something I bought on the drive home. 3. Rescue. I always keep a watering can full of water nearby for quick rescues on the way to work, or when I first arrive home and find the eggplants wilting. 4. Prioritize. If I can fit a bigger project into one evening, I make sure I have supplies and a list of priorities handy. This means you have to plan ahead to have a bale of peat moss etc. but when there are 10 things that needs to be done yesterday, keeping a list helps get me started quickly when I have a moment instead of wandering aimlessly thinking how hopeless it all is! 5. Procrastinate. Save big projects like fencing, freezing/canning or major weeding for the weekend. You just won't get them done in one evening, so use that time for something else. So... for the most part, gardening can be handled in 30-45 minutes a day plus 4 hours each weekend. If things still get out of control, They do sell veggies at farmstands and you can always use your efforts for compost!!!...See MorePlease post pictures of your potager
Comments (49)I have soaker hoses on the perimter with quick disconnects so I can drag my 250 feet plus hose to each. While its being watered, I like to weed or deadhead. Then, I hand water the interior. One day (on the to-do list), I'd love to trench in some pvc-type piping underground from the faucet. Then there'll be no more near misses with running over my hose with the lawn mower. My mom always shakes her head and says, "Isn't a kitchen garden supposed to be by the kitchen?" Well, yes, but the sunniest spots were either where the garden is now or smack in the middle of the lawn the kids play on. And, so, I get to hose wrestle when its time to mow....See Moregirlgroupgirl
