Why isn't my Hellebore fragrant?

I hope everyone who suffered in the ice storm is warm again. It missed us here for the second year--extreme eastern Ok.

I have a white hellebore that has been blooming for almost a month. It went through 18 degrees with no damage at all to the blooms. Wonderful to see something blooming in the middle of the winter. The only complaint is that it has no fragrance at all, and the first plants I ever saw--a bed of a dozen or so in Italy in midJan--were so fragrant with a wonderful gardenia-like scent that I could smell them from the sidewalk. And it was very cold there too--Northern Italy. Does anyone know anything about Hellebores and why mine has no fragrance? I love seeing them, would love to smell them too. Dorothy
