Request for help for the PSA - Need Photos

I saw Ivysmom's message about not being able to find a list and photos of name varieties of plumerias and I totally agree with her. I am a member of the PSA society in Houston and this is one of the things that has been discussed. So, at the recent meetings a request went out for volunteers to help with getting this information on the website. We just had a training session on how to do this so I am just starting and really need help getting this done.

So for you people out there that take those amazing pictures of your plumerias, would you please, please send me copies that we could use for the website. We will give you credit for your photo. Also, if you can tell me where you live, ie. south Florida, north California, south Texas that would be great. This way we can show people how the plant blooms under different conditions - high heat and humidity, cooler temps, etc. I, however, cannot guarantee that someone would not use your photo if we put it up on the website as they did with James but we would definitely state that it is your photo.

Also, if you want to share the growing habits, we could also list that information and the smell would be great too. I have already done some research and have some info as regards to smell but it doesn't hurt to have it confirmed.

So people, this is a chance for you to help us make the PSA society a great resource for all of us but I really need help to get my part done.

You can email me with your photos and/or suggestions but remember, we may not be able to use all the photos received but will do our best.

Thank you so, so much. I know you have posted so many beautiful pictures and I hope we can use some of those. You are awesome for volunteering and I will make sure you are given credit for whatever we use!!!

You're welcome to anything I've got, no credit neccesary unless it helps w/ the format of your presentation. Sounds like a great thing to do and I'd be happy if I can help in any way. Please be warned I am incredibly disorganized and inefficient when it comes to filing/organizing photos and the bog is asleep (under blanket) as of last weekend. Anything usable that I've posted you're welcome to. Anything I can find I'll send to your address (no step by step but I think I have some interesting plant shots). Thanks for IDs! I thought both vilmorniana and attenuata were possibilities. It was not bothered one bit by frost (23F twice this winter (which makes me think it is not attenuata) & it is readily sending up pups, which makes me think it's not vilmorniana. Maybe it's some hybrid agave?? I bought it unlabeled at Lowes.

The pond one is unique and just getting started to be very desirable as it grows. There is plenty of room to let it free range. If you want to keep those two long branches they will have to be supported as long as you have the Atlas. Front yard specimen...really is out of its element to grow and become a nice presentation plant. There is no room for this to happen. If you don't have an area to relocate then you will have to selectively prune it to keep it in in confines. As it was not trained for much upward growth it has become a ground creeper and that area for expansion is limited. Anything that is staked for height get rid of. These are secondary branches that will not support themselves in free air for many years especially those driveway bound. The photos of this cultivat are not easy to decipher in regard to pruning for the most desirable look. Go for the obvious cuts first. That in turn should should help you decide on where to go next. Another thought I am getting is you don't think the branches should lay on the ground. Nothing wrong with this. and quite normal. The one growing over the rock is quite attractive and with this cultivar the only look that is possible because its growing habit has already been decided. Dave

According to all the major soapstone suppliers I called about this (I did a lot of research!), soapstone is so heavy it either needs no epoxy to hold it at all, or just something as simple as silicone. HOWEVER, my fabricator, who was not knowledgeable about soapstone, used a PERMANENT, rock hard drying epoxy. Francy what you wrote above reminded me of some research I did for a seam in my granite that had cracked. I posted a question on the stoneadvice forum, asking what the best solution would be for the seam. The responses indicated that polyester should be used rather than epoxy in my particular instance. The reasoning: earthquakes. Yes, I live in the Bay Area too. Here's probably way too much information, but it's relevant to the fact that your fabricator used epoxy to attach the soapstone to your cabinets. My fabricator repaired the cracked seam with polyester. Now, IF THERE WAS NO MOVEMENT EXPECTED, I think the proper solution to the problem would be to remove all the polyester, and re-seam with epoxy. But Antonio is correct in stating that if you did so, and the stone experienced movement (due to an earthquake, for instance)--the stone would indeed crack. The seam would hold, but the stone would crack elsewhere, probably within an inch or so of the seam. (We've done numerous lab tests to prove this). So you're faced with a conundrum--take a chance that there will be no movement and the seam will look good, but the stone may crack if there is movement; or use the "fuse theory"--just like a fuse blows in an electric circuit before there is more damage elsewhere, you can look at the polyester as being a fuse--if there is movement, the "fuse" (the seam) will break, but the stone will still be ok. Then you'd just have to re-seam. (posted by Mike Beckmann from Bonstone Materials Corp.) I hope this post doesn't add more stress to your life - if so I apologize. I hope you will consider letting us use some of your pictures. You have such beauties and maybe if your pictures are on the PSA website, maybe people will think twice before borrowing your pictures to sell their plants!!!

But if not, don't worry we will just contiue to enjoy them on this forum. I personally love seeing pictures of your plumerias.

Sounds like a wonderful resource and quite the project! Will it only include registered cultivars? I have some wonderful pictures of Thumbalina from JJ... but I don't think she's registered :(

Joan, do you need photos only of registered varieties, or any named cultivars? For instance, lots of us have good photos and experience with Penang Peach but it isn't registered.

I have very few photos and info but am willing to provide what I have.

LOL, I am only woring with the "un-registered" plumerias so I will have a blast finding good pictures of all the plumerias out there. I believe they number in the thousands so this could be a life long project! It will definitely be a challenge but I know the people on this forum have some great photos if I can talk them into sharing. So if you have a photo you would like to share, just send me an email with your picture and the name of the plumeria.

Just to clarify: you only then need photos of UNregistered cultivars? I too don't have lots of photos but will be happy to help contribute to this cool project.

May I also recommend that we include any historical data which could help place the picture in context if available.

i.e. when/where you bought it (such as PSA Sale in 2012), location and time of year/weather conditions of the photo ( such as "July in Texas" and "95 degrees, high humidity).
