This is the west end of the bed where Yvonne's salvia is. You can see the propane tank. YS is right in front or to the right of it. That is Purple Hyacinth Vine on the garden fence and, believe it or not, is just two plants. I was just sick it got frozen before I could harvest the seeds. I think I got 3 and they may not be mature enough.

The lime green edging is Jewels of Opar (talinum paniculatum). The blue is a self-seeded salvia, Blue Bedder or Victoria. The shorter red salvia is from self seeded plants, maybe Parks Tower series.

You can walk this path through east to the drive or turn at the Bird House pole and follow the east garden fence to the garage which would be the back side of the Drive Border.

More than you needed to know but I am always curious about the layout.

OH MY! Simply stunning! Now you've got me thinking flowers more... LOL! That Purple Hyacinth Vine is gorgeous too, will it come back next year on it's own?

Oh, man, that's right up my alley! I love "wild" looking areas (as opposed to the more manicured type). This is EXACTLY the type of look I'd love to do on our place. I'm taking notes. LOL

Liza, I think you'll love China Doll, particularly because of how many blooms it puts on...prolific doesn't do it justice. Poochella, in fact I did hope that the granite mulch might prolong the season a little due to the heat, and/or promote better growth. I have my fingers crossed that it won't get too hot. I also didn't want stuff that would grow weeds, as has been my experience with organic mulches. FYI, it is supposed to get black after a few rains. Penerosa, there are certainly similarities, but...I don't really think it looks like a waterlily. I could be wrong, but I think yours is a Formal Decorative. China Doll is 4" diameter on a 18-24" bush, what size is yours? Cheers, Russ

Woodyoak: The perogla is aluminum, the coth cover can be removed and I probably will this winter. I think it will take a pretty good wind; it has been tested once already. It was made to be anchored to either the wood of the deck or the ground but we felt more comfortable with it screwed to the deck. (The smaller part of the post goes all the way to the deck and is secured with very long screws into the joists of the deck.) I had wondered about the vines myself for I feel sure that the frame will outlast the cloth. Cameron: Yes there are pots in front of the two of the posts. We made the deck 12 x 16, the pergola is 10 x 10 and we purposely placed it towards the back of the deck. I had envisioned that being the front and I do want a path leading to it. Sue

I remember how difficult it is to get started when you have a bare, flat yard. I kept staring out the windows, trying to imagine what I could plant where. It helps if you have someone stand outside while you look out the windows. Have your helper walk around from place to place, waving his/her arms, and maybe even holding a broom up overhead. Try to imagine your helper is a bush or a tree. When your helper gets to a spot that looks good from the inside, make a note of the position, or have your helper plant a garden stake (much easier to move than a tree!) Then go stand outside, or across the street, and see if that really is a good place for a tree. Use pots of annuals which you can move around until you find a space placement that suits you. THEN dig a bed. You can always set out empty boxes, or laundry baskets or even chairs to find spots for a shrub. Anything of a similar size that's easily movable will do. Here are some general principals I've found helpful. If the front is your main entrance, plant things that you will be happy to see when you come home. Start planting close to the walk and steps. This will encourage you to expand. Take it slow. I read once that you should live in a house though one set of seasons before you do any major changes. I translated that into planting annuals at first...which will have to be redone anyway. Fall is really the best time to plant trees and shrubs, as then they will get lots of rain. And, they will be cheaper at the 'year end' sales. Plant evergreens and long season perennials in the front as you and the neighbors will be looking at this area every day. Don't be afraid to take out something you don't like. Try to transplant it, or give it away. If it lives, fine, but you don't have to put up with something you don't like. Bare ground will make you feel better than a plant that irriates you. Don't plant acid loving plants close to the foundation of the house or near the cement path or sidewalk. They won't thrive. I figured this out after losing a row of azaleas, one by one. You can buy spray paint that is specially made to be sprayed holding the can upside down, so you can mark the edges of the beds. Just make sure that it isn't 'clear' paint. (Yes, it does come that way - a friend did this!) Or take a container of flour out and use that to mark plant placement or bed edges if you want a very temporary marking. The front yard is your house's public face and a place to show off your gardening skills. Rather than screening off the street, plant so that people driving or walking by will have something pleasant to look at and your visitors will find inviting. And for safety reasons, you don't want to 'hide' your house. Burglars go for entrances that are screened off from the view of the neighbors. Re paths: Make sure you leave good access to the utility boxes. Make sure you can get a lawnmower and wheelbarrow everywhere they'll need to go. You won't want low branching trees too near paths, either. If you don't have a pleasant view out the windows, one small patch of bright color will draw your eye away from the eyesore. Try a few pots of color, just set out on the ground, and see how they draw your attention. You do want to 'hide' the foundation of the house with taller, more solid shrubs. This will help transition the house into the lot, and help it look 'planted' rather than just 'plopped' onto the lot. Place lower plants further away from the house, along the path and sidewalk. You don't have to have ANY lawn in the front, but you don't have to take it all out at once, either. Have fun! Daphne in Tacoma

Me? I'd buy a nice Horizons natural woven wood shade 96" wide. A rod, rings and about 6 pair of white sheers , inexpensive, Make the window "go away".....and give either of the bed sizes some breathing room. The full? Those 6 inches in width and 5" in length don't change much , so that's just preference. That said? The wallpaper ( Priano) suggests a different bed entirely - the object of lust shall we call it, feels too heavy, and too rustic for the paper, so feathery, summery, light, airy and feminine. "I'm not going for literal beach house" "This is a summer house on Cape Cod, not a full-time residence." But you're not going for everyone's rustic farm house either, wallpaper considered: ) I like the other bed ! ......with a different feel in the room. Garnet Hill below, comes in full and Queen. "Presence" without dominating a small room.

I love those hyacinth's. I think I'm going to have to get me some now! I have been wanting an arched trellis and that would be beautiful on it. Thanks for the idea and your flowers are just amazing!

You may be surprised, Glenda. Both my neighbor and I have grown Hyacinth Bean and it reseeds on its own quite prolifically. Course you are north of me so maybe it won't, but I usually find myself, and so does Ralph, pulling up seedlings.

Your flower beds are stunningly gorgeous! You should be very proud.

I simply love Hyacinth Bean vine. One year I grew it on the east fence of the veggie garden and it climbed from the fence to the 14' tall broom corn and made a spectacular jungle that stopped trafic. That was around 2003 or maybe 2004.

Sometimes I get some hyacinth bean volunteers from beans that fell before I collected seed (and maybe I'll get some next year because I didn't get the seeds collected before the first freeze hit). They aren't perennial in our zones so self-sown volunteers are your only hope of having the plant 'come back'....either that, or starting new seeds each year. Usually, I'll get a volunteer seedling or 2 or 3 in the spring if we had a pretty dry and mild winter. If we have a cold and wet winter, the beans rot and I don't get volunteers.

Melissa, It is a monster plant so if you are going to plant it on an arch you intend to walk beneath, make your arch 7 or 8feet tall or you'll get slapped in the head by drooping vines by the end of the summer. (Ask me how I figured that one out......and the answer is that my arch is only 6' tall and the heavy vines 'sag' and can become difficult to duck beneath.)

In looking for the salvia seeds, I found a damp package of the hyacinth been with two moldy looking seeds left. I think I will try to plant them next spring. I don't think any of mine even got to the filled pod stage except the two pods I harvested. I gave my sis a couple of those and have two left. That should be plenty. They were planted to hide the compost pile so they will find a good home if any did drop.

Now I am looking at those dead vines and wondering how on earth I will get them off the fence. They are like pencil sized wood...I can't even pull them off. I think pruners will have to be used.

I hate removing the dead vines. Sometimes I leave them on the woven wire fencing until they are exceptionally dry and cracking and then I use a stiff wire brush to 'rub' them off the fence. In a perfect world, the vines would merely dissolve in the rain...or the deer would come eat them. Unfortunately, it is not a perfect world.

My hyacinth beans reseed but mine aren't as pretty as yours. I had one in a pot last year that climbed a trellis; another climbs a metal arch. I need to give mine some compost.

I have been known to leave them and just plant a new crop right over them! I am a Ruth Stout kind of gardener!

I did pull down the scratchy cucumber vines though, they looked so ugly I couldn't stand it.

Helen, I do suspect it was the compost pile which is really just a pile of kitchen waste, lots of coffee grounds and little shovel or two of soil rarely tossed on only when the composting was getting a little ripe! Like with melon rinds drawing the flying things. I planted one on the corner by the birdhouse pole and it was not nearly as lush. I just realized why with this discussion! Use some of that manure pile your friend has accumulated for you; that should really get it going.

So my next question is if those are hyacinth bean vines, do they produce edible beans? Just wondering. I don't want them for the beans, just for the plant and flowers bcz I think they are beautiful!! My husband has a concrete business and so I'm going to see if I can talk him into making me some concrete planters and somehow adding a trellis into the concrete so it and the planters would more or less be one. That way the trellis won't be so apt to come out of the ground. It may not sound like a good idea to him, but it sounds great to me!! =)

You can eat them, more or less. In some nations they eat the hyacinth bean plant's leaf, flower, pod, seed and or root with no toxicity problems. However, the dried beans can have toxic side effects if not prepared properly. Proper preparation involves changing and discarding the water and I think you're supposed to do that several times.

In some places with ethnic groceries, you can buy them in the frozen food department.

Now, the question is, do you want to eat them? I don't. It is so easy to grow all kinds of wonderful beans that taste good and don't require all that boiling/draining of the water and then boiling again. Some people like the way they taste, but most people I know who've tried them really did not care for their flavor or appearance after all that boiling.

so ....ok, I've been reading and keeping up with everyone in between holiday preparations and this FREAKING BLIZZARD! ugh....

But if anyone wants seeds, I've got TONS! And I'll have starts for the spring swap too! I've collected them after a freeze and they still do well. Even had many, many volunteers. So far I only have a plentiful supply of the purple. I'm saving all 10 of the white for myself (selfish, aren't I? LOL).

Just send me an e-mail and as soon as it thaws, I'll get them to you!

Paula, I have never noticed any scent at all on mine. Maybe different strains have odor, but then I can't small my petunias that are supposed to be fragrant...or the nicotiana....maybe my smeller has retired.

I can smell the basil and lavender and sage though.
