Rooting sago palm pups question?

Hi I recently got some sago palm pups. I read on a website to let them dry, then soak in fungicide, then in rooting solution before planting.

Do I need to use fungicide, I like to garden organically as possible, are there any organic fungicides?

What do you use - techniques, products?

Any input appreciated.

I'd like to know too...I read somewhere they take a long time to root.

Let the pups suberize for less than a week, and plant in well drained medium w/ light watering.-

Should be okay, but here are some factors to consider: 1.) Your plant has been grown indoors and has not been hardened off to any degree of cold. 2.) Are your plants big or tiny? Size matters and large ones (in bigger containers) will be more cold tolerant. 3.) Is your soil excellent draining? If you get into a cold, wet period, you might have a problem as cycads may rot. 4.) Be sure to keep in a shady outdoor position once you initially put outside (maybe for a week or two) until plant is more accepting of direct sun. 5.) Keep in mind, plants in containers have much less cold tolerance than a plant or tree in the ground but the ground (especially if mulched) is MUCH warmer than an uninsulated container of any kind. Mine have been out for about 10 days now but they are large and have been kept cold but frost free (in the garage) since December. Generally, I get them out once temps stay above 32 F (But I don't worry if temps fall into upper 20's.) If your plants are small, I would hold off until minimums are in the upper 30's. Keep them on the dry side until it warms up (been too cold here of late!) P.S. I've had mine over 20 years! Good luck.

Hi Dave; Thanks for answnering my question. No, These pups were not in the sun at all. As far as the roots go, I just pulled a few out of the bag and those had no roots at all. They feel hard and not rotted. I just keept taking the pups off my other large Sagos that I had to leave behind but as I stated, I made a small area in my old yard and they all seemed to do quite well, fronds and all. I was just wondering about the roots and if I did plant them, will a new set of roots form. You sound like your quite knowlegeable about Sagos. I'll go out and dump the bag out and see if any on the bottom have rotted, I'll trash the ones that I know are mushy. If you think the others will form roots, I'd be happy as a clam! I have a Male and a Female Sago both about 4 feet tall. Both of them regularly (more from the male) sprout "Pups". I take a sharp spade (small shovel) and get as close to the parent plant as possible and then put pressure until the Pup pops off. When we vacation, I have sometimes had to remove up to 20 or more pups from the male sago. The wounds always heal with no care and the parent plants always do fine after. The males trunk is a little deformed from all the surgeries to remove pups :) Difference between male and female..... Males have a large pollen stalk that grows out of the center - later dries up and falls off. Females have what looks like a large pregnant belly that is holding all of the red seed pods. This belly opens up and has TONS of seeds!! These eventually move to the bottom as more fronds grow and then they fall on the ground. Here are pictures of the male and female plants.....

If the sago pups in question are of the king or queen variety they are very easy to grow.I agree with Merrill.Keep indoors or some where fairly warm since you are in zone 7.No long hard freeze exposure.The one big concern with this variety is the asian cycad scale problem.You may want to treat them with a pestcide for "armored scales" just as a preventive measure.Since they are just pups they will not need much.Just drench pot soil good.When spring comes the new growth will suck in pestcide.I recommend to keep up periodically.This way if you are unfortunate enough to get the scale the sago will be poison.The asain cycad scale is a hard thing to beat once you get it.It is airbourne.It is a worldwide problem.Just read the other day that sagos as far north as North Carolina have it.I use one made by Spectrcide.Active ingredient -dinotefuran.

My two large Sagos were subjected to the teens in February, and unfortunately the frost cloths I had secured over them were blown off by 40-50 mph wind gusts. They came back last year, and one has already started in with a growth "flush"; however, both trunks are covered with something fuzzy---almost like insulation material. I haven't noticed this before. Is it normal or is it some kind of fungus?
