Ho Ho Ho Windmill sporting it's Xmas light

Just thought a would post a picture of my Windmill, I know people may get sick of looking at it. I put it's Xmas light on it not so much for Xmas but just for a little bit of extra heat.

This is it's second winter without any protection other than these xmas nights. Not sure if they even help but it makes me feel better.

Here it is when it was a small Palm, I think this picture is it's second year in the ground, however it was protected then, kind of nice to see growth rate.

Very nice looking palm. it encourages me to see how healthy your Windmill palm is even though you only used christmas lights on it over the last winter and now again this late fall.

I have some windmill palm seeds trying to germinate on top of my fridge. They have been covered in a moist medium covering the bottom a quart sized freezer bag. It has been about 4 weeks since I first put them there. Once some of these do sprout I hope I can manage to grow them large enough to plant outside and then take care of them well enough for in the following years for them to end up looking as nice as the one in your photos

How many years have past from the time the bottom photo was taken until you took the top photo?

OK, then, imagine cutting your accustomed assets in half and think about it again. Four choices.....1) with him the same 2) with him but better...if you can get him to wake up to it...and assuming you still like him 3) alone 4) with the other guy...or some other guy...who, I would assume, could bring his 1/2, assuming similar to yours, with him. Haven't even touched on family/friends, but there it is, basically. Come on back and say how it looks to you.

Hi Mellie... I get asked that question soooo often from other GW people..I got it at Bed Bath and Beyond..but I haven't seen it there lately. Your best bet is to look online for something similar...Good Luck! KA:)

Arts and Crafts houses are gloomy even on bright days in Southern California. I don't think there's any way to be really true to the handcrafted style without. It's lighting lighting lighting, as you already know. I don't think dark counters will really make it that much darker--that is, even with light counters you'd still need lighting lighting lighting, so go with what you like ;)

Lauren, I may cause a few heads to explode but I water often. Plants are on multi tiered plant stands with a t5ho fixture mounted under each shelf. Heat from the fixture drys the plants above. Most are in 4" plastic pots, a 50/50 mix of C&S mix and perlite. I use Schultz Cactus fert 2-3 times a month. Schultz is a very weak fert and is recommended to be used every time you water. 8 month old cuttins Much different for the sameplants outdoors. I water those every other month when it's below 45-50*F. In fact I just watered the outdoor group a few days ago, first time since new years. A few finger jades looked shriveled and sickly but plumped right up in 24hrs. Back indoors, I keep it around 66*F, lights on from 6am to 8pm. I water based on the weight of the plant, much lighter when dry. A healthy plant can dry out a 4" pot in 48hrs in my environment. I'm doubled up on a few Aloe hybrids, I've withheld water on some to see what the difference would be. Night and day, the watered Aloe have much plumber leaves and grow much faster. If I did not have the heat from the light fixtures I would water much less, it would take much longer for the plant to dry out. Plants on the bottom shelf (no heat) get 1/3 the water. More Jade cuttings, 6-8 months old. Largest cutting I've rooted, it formed roots very fast and is the best grower in the house. Liz, it's been under t5ho since I recieved the cutting. I'll see if I can contact the evilbay seller I bought it from, I want another large cutting from her, nice healthy plant.

I don't think the lights do anything but they do look pretty!That is an awesome palm!Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lovethosepalms- your palm amazes me! I can't believe the growth rate, and I'm really impressed that you don't give it any protection in Kentucky! What city are you in? What kind of soil is that palm planted in? Does your ground freeze?

As you can tell I don't visit here as much as I use to, but I will try to answer your questions.

Island I did nothing special when I planted it I only added add some potting soil when I dug the hole, and really not a lot of potting soil. Yes the ground does freeze here to give an example I think water lines must be installed three feet below ground so that should give you some idea of how far the ground freezes.

Kat, I think it has been three years from the second picture to the first. I am kind of loosing track of time with it. I really need to go through my digital camera and get the dates off the pictures I have saved most of them I think.

It has been colder than normal this late fall for some reason, however I think it going to be in the 60's tomorrow so that will make the palm happy.

I have one Windmill that I have grown from a seeding and now it is about a five gallon size and I am going to plant it in the front yard,in the spring which is not really good spot because the house will shade it early in the morning which I think help the plant in the picture to help it warm up a little with the first morning light.
