Becoming a Farmers' Market Grower

Be a part of one of the fastest growing sectors of Oklahoma agriculture as we meet the rising demand for fresh, locally grown products!

This is a free workshop for potential producers of fruits and vegetablesÂ.the products that are in highest demand at local farmers markets. Home gardeners, acreage owners and farmers, are all welcome to attend.

10:30 BreakÂEnjoy refreshments made with local and regional farm products!

10:45 Grower Panel, Hear about their experiences at the market.

11:30 Food Coops, Restaurants and Other Buyers of Local Produce.

11:45 Questions and Answers Visit informally with market managers, growers and other speakers.

This bill has NOTHING to do with socialism and EVERYTHING to do with capitalism. The profits of big agriculture are written all over this bill. I've spent weeks 'dissecting' every word in the bill and researching the co sponsors and the wretched politicians that wrote it , you should do the same. It does in fact impact farmers markets or any vegetable that is sold or meant for human consumption. It makes all growers comply with industry regulations ie insect control/pest nematodes,bacterial disease control and on and on. It hardly impacts the current agriculture monopolies and impacts the small farmers that don't have the resources to comply with regulations. Tom Vilsak (one of the bills authors) is heavily in favor of large industrial farms and genetically modified crops. Political spin confuses people, it is not about socialism per say , if we want to be intellectually honest HR 875 was born out of corporate monopolies infiltrating Washington with their money and influence. This bill is capitalism out of control,paradoxically the profit motive of corporate monopolies is behind this bill. They see the threat of small farmers and back yard growers and they want to stop it. This is all about $ business $....thats capitalism for you.

Crafts at a farmers market

Our farmers Market is a year- round indoor market. for the farmers it is a growers only market with a wide variety of meats eggs vegetables fruit and one dairy then we have food vendors that make fresh from scratch foods ethnic foods , breads and other bake goods, homemade pimento cheese, salsa ,granola etc. We have 2 free trade coffee and 1 tea vendor. Then we have craft/art vendors everything from earrings,aprons and clothing, knitted items, pottery, metal sculpture, photography, candles , soap, Homemade cleaning etc these are hand made items. This works for our market- making it the place to be on Saturday mornings. Customers can eat breakfast sip coffee talk with friends and get almost everything on there shopping list from local vendors instead of heading to "Walmart" . It is nothing like a flea market either! Being a year round market the non farm vendors help keep the market going all winter. After all how many people think about going to a farmers market after the summer is ended. We (with season extention) we are able to sell till at least Jan. but if we didn't have other vendors we wouldn't have enough farmers to draw people there in the fall winter months. I think we help each other not hurt. During the summer when berries and produce are plentyful people are there to buy fresh produce first and may buy craft items if they are buying for a special occasion and during the late fall folks are thnking about holiday shopping and come for the crafts and then realize there is fresh produce still avalable. Most of our farmers have tried to come up with craft type or value added items we can sell for holiday shoppers too.

The Market will run from May 3 through the end of October, every Saturday morning at the old MKT station, corner of Keeler and Frank Phillips Blvd. Vendors need to be a member of the Bartlesville Area Farmers Market Association. If you want a packet mailed to you, please reply (off list is OK) with your mailing address. The Vendors Meeting is March 27, 6:3o pm, at the site - you are free to come and sign up there. As usual thanks a lot for posting this article violet. I try to buy local crops when i can and feel it's more important now than it was last year even, because of tainted food showing up.(its olives now) I'm hoping Clarksville, AR will sell more things this year too,they've been sold out by noon before. vickie

Of course Arkansawians are welcome. Just a couple weeks ago a buch of okies went to Arkansas for an Organic Growing workshop. Seems like a porous border. LOL

David, you and me had the same response. I've been told that the Kerr Center is going to be doing an Organic Gardening workshop in the OKC area in 2008.

I attended this workshop today. Did anyone else make it? Someone mentioned a canning class on Dec 13.... did anyone hear any details?

Breasley I didn't hear any of the details about a canning class-but I wanted to say that the workshop Sat. was wonderful, amazing!!!!! There was so much info. offered and all of the speakers were great! Really got me pumped up to start market growing.

I sold at the Farmers Market in Norman for about 10 years and really enjoyed it. Got to know a lot of fantastic people. I still miss it.

The best growers at the market were always the hardest workers that took pride in themselves, their effort to make the market a success, and the product they offered.

There were a few retired people that did the market just for something to occupy their time and loved being a part of the market. They didn't produce a lot of veggies or fruit, but were just as valuable to the market as the big truck farmers were. They weren't always as busy and were great greeters and socializers that I loved being around them.

The one negative is how many times you have to handle your product and the gas you burn if you have to go back and forth very much over any kind of distance. Being able to gauge correctly how much to bring and selling out right at closing time is the optimal way to go. less waste and work at the market.
