2010 pecan crop and prices

FYI - pecan prices are near record levels this year due to the increasing demand from overseas (mostly China). If you can find this years pecans shelled out that are of good quality for under $8.00 per lb, you are doing very well and should get them. If you can find good cracked natives less than $2.00 per lb or cracked papershells less then $2,50 per lb, you have found a great buy. (The shells make up 50 to 60% of the weight.)

The crop size was estimated to be large here in Oklahoma, but in the last month the estimates have dropped a lot. The quality is variable, and it will be hard to find good ones unless they were managed with at least a little effort this summer.

A good place to get some, IMO, is from Valley View Pecans just a few miles east of Shawnee and a few miles north of Earlsboro. They are the only place I'm aware of in Oklahoma that is a fully inspected and approved cleaning facility that can totally process pecans for resale. Their prices are good and quality seemed good to me, but prices across the state are going up as we speak. Valley View is the place we take a portion of our own crop for cleaning so that we can sell them here in the local Tulsa area at the holidays and next summer at a couple of small markets.

Good luck!
