He Says 'We'll Call it Cool'...

and I don't get it. The low here this morning was 54 degrees. The normal low is 39. It's beyond my understanding why a professional weather guesser on one of the OKC channels would imply that 15 degrees above normal is "cool."

Does the guy only go outside to get from building to car and from car to building? Or is he watering down the facts for others just like him?

In my mind weather has to be in context. Yes this mornings 54 would be cool if it were August 15th. But it's November 3rd. I would be hyping the lovely November weather and encouraging others to get out and enjoy one of the last nice days of the season.

Guess this is one of my major grips about PWG's. They live in caves with no windows and think everyone else lives in caves too.

I was out before daylight enjoying the beautiful morning today. Won't be many left like this one.

Randy, for those people who don't get out in the weather a lot, "cool" is when one needs a sweater in order to feel comfortable outside.

As for your second paragraph, yes and yes.

We are enjoying the wonderful weather, too. Fall is my favorite time of year. It just doesn't last long enough, even in Oklahoma. --Ilene

Well, our PWG's have been talking about how it is much warmer than usual during the day (and sometimes at night), so I don't have a bone to pick with them over that.

However, most of them keep mentioning how it is 'a little dry'. A little? We've had 22" of rain and ought to have had 32" by now and we are a 'little' dry? Now that the pastures have begun burning somewhere in southern OK/northern TX on a daily basis, the PWGs are finally beginning to talk about it being 'very dry'. Hello! Where have they been all year long???

I've already been out doing firescaping this AM. It is a gorgeous morning and we are going to be in the mid- to upper-80s this afternoon. I guess we have a few 'hot' days left before the next cold front arrives later in the week. It is still warm enough at night that the frogs are croaking from twilight on.

I love autumn and wish it would last forever.

I'm not much of a winter girl, although I do like snow. (Snow, by the way, hardly ever falls here so that's probably why I love it so.....because we don't have it but once every 3 or 4 years.) And, half the time, what we call snow is really a winter mix of sleet, freezing rain and some grainy snow pellets. REAL snow without sleet or frozen rain mixed in is fairly rare here where I live.

If you have room in that cool laundry - could you pot up the dwarf Iris? I'm guessing reticulata. Make it a seriously gritty mix, perhaps with some leaf mould in the basic potting mix (NOT a peat-based mix, though). And barely moist. I'd use something like an azalea pot just for this season. Plant so the bulbs are barely covered with mix. What is likely to happen is that some (even several) will be 'blind'. They'll come up, have miserable leaves and be rotten to the core. Pull them out and discard. (Happens even when you plant at the 'regular' time. :-((( ) Hopefully there's a bit of root emergence on your bulbs along with some pale green sprouts already. They need good light but be wary of too much heat (no more than 45F) because they won't have the roots there to supply moisture to the leaves, yet. Don't be surprised at the end of the grow season to find that the bulbs have broken up the way fritillaries do if they're too shallow-planted. Just keep them and let them grow on. When there are leaves after the flowers feed them every two weeks or so with a good 'flowering houseplant' fertiliser. They'll probably come right for you though it may take a couple of seasons. The Corydalis. I'd be wary of too much damp. Persnicketty little creatures. They don't like dry, either. Again, if you use a gritty mix with, perhaps, some good loamy soil in the mix, and leaf mould so it has that 'free-draining and moisture retentive' mix beloved of garden gurus. Keep them cool with indirect light. I'm looking forward to enjoying your 'brag' pictures... Good luck!

After seeing what my parents have been through, I am very, very frightened of the impending doom of old age. I don't have the resources they did. Many of my friends and I say repeatedly that we will not go through what our parents have gone through, and we will not be warehoused in nursing homes. But what's the alternative? A suicide kit? For now, I'm healthy - thank God. Should that change, and the odds are it will, I do not know what I will do. Everything seems to come down to greed and money. And no one seems to be able to have a constructive discussion about politics anymore - just blind, deaf vitriol for anyone on "the other side."

That was written last night just as the library was closing, so I ended more abruptly than I intended. Our story was more give and take and a real discussion, less abrupt than the way I ended it here. It seems to me that we have as a society become more self-centred, less concerned with the welfare of others and of the community than was true in earlier generations ... and "locations", possibly, as I grew up on a farm near a village and our village and church was mainly long-term residents, so it had become somewhat like larger, or extended family. As a farmer I learned of the importance of being in tune with the earth and using resources carefully and with discretion, not wasting them. The fact troubles me that while small, single-horse-drawn covered wagons delivered milk, bread and ice to homes in cities, about 70 years ago, that they began building refrigerators about 60 years ago, that a substantial percentage of the ones that they built 50 years ago lasted for 40 years ... but that a substantial proportion of the ones that they build today last for about ten years. I feel doubly troubled: that we're wasting precious resources, of petroleum and iron ore, smelters, cutting and shaping machines and trucks to haul the parts ... including plastics, which are also sourced from petroleum. It took millions of years to produce it, and we've been using a major portion of the earth's supply in the last less than 100 years. It seems to me that our grandkids will be angry with us for our wastefulness, our profligacy. Secondly ... when the engineers, who haven't become stupider in the last 50 years, build a fridge and sell it to me with a smile on their face, that'll last about a fifth as long as they could make it to last ... ... I feel cheated ... sort of like being mugged (without a gun). That's without making reference to all of the pollution and global warming that are being generated by these wasteful ways that we've developed in recent years. And are guaranteed to become more acute, as millions in various parts of the world become more prosperous. Dad taught me that when I was doing a job ... that I should do it RIGHT! (And when I didn't ... I had to do it over again). Plus ... when you work with folks scores of thousands of whom have left their former lives and become refugees in another part of their war-torn country with nothing but the clothes on their backs, as you learn how the small things of life become precious to them, you learn of the value of all aspects of this, what I believe to be God's world, that S/He's entrusted into our hands and expects us to make use of as responsible stewards. ole joyful

Ugh, this is turning into a nightmare. I can't even begin to articulate the headache I've endured with this kitchen remodel. As far as the counters go, I purchased through home depot. The quartz I wanted was discontinued, so I had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get HD to approve a switch to a different stone that they don't normally carry. Now, this fabricator has already ordered the stone. I don't know what i'm on the hook for and what I'm not. I called up HD tonight and complained that I thought the fabricator was lying to me to cover up his obvious lack of skill. We'll see how far that gets me.

Dawn,

They finally cut and bailed the pasture to the north of the house which is always a huge relief. I actually mow about 8 feet of pasture to give me a bigger fire break.

I'm a beach bum at heart. I could thrive in 50-60's at night to 80-90's during the day all year round.

I guess fall has always been special in that it brings a change from our wonderfully warm summers. There are very few things nice about winter. Give me a few days, I might come up with something.:-)

I'm glad they got that pasture cut and bailed. I wish they'd cut the one south of us. It is 45 acres and hasn't been cut and baled since we bought this land in 1997 so I know it has a lot of thatch.

I like the same weather you like. Winter is hard on me because I hate being cold.

The only part of winter I like is when it is nice and warm inside and big fluffy snowflakes are falling outside. I don't want to be outside in the snow, just watching it from the warm indoors. Oh, and I love thundersnow, but mostly just because it is such a novelty.

The best part of winter? When the seed catalogs arrive!

Randy, it is cool in my house! I haven't lit the furnaces yet. It's a little sad when I have to open up the doors and windows to warm up the inside of my house :)

I'm enjoying the fall weather. Even though it's rainy and cool today, it's been a pretty nice fall. I still have flowers at my house. The roses are loving the cooler weather.
