Did you let your plants get dry for a while then water them a lot?
That will split the pods sometimes.
They try to make up for the dry times by sucking up too much water.

I have an auto sprinkler system set to water throughly (30min)every other morning at 6am. Day time temps have been in the 90's F with night time temps in the 80's so soil does dry out between watering. In addition over the last few weeks we have gotten several inches of rain, so mayby the moister swings have been too great. Should I set the sprinkler to water every morning instead of every other so that the soil never drys out?

Usually a watering schedule of almost any regular time and amount of water a plant gets used to.
If pods had already set then they got extra water-rain,the rain could have split the pods.
It might have been the extra water from the rain that did it.
The plants were just pigging out on the extra water.
Peppers usually do pretty good with less water than tomato plants for instance.
It's usually the extra water the plants aren't used to that splits already formed pods.
If your plants look healthy I'd leave your watering schedule alone.It must be OK.It probably was the rain that did the pod splitting.
Your peppers will be hotter and taste better with less water too.
I'd leave things alone as long as your plants look healthy.

It sounds like you are doing things all right to me.
I'd bet with your watering schedule there is moisture under ground even though the surface looks dry between waterings.
I'd only up the waterings if the plants started to dry out and look unhealthy.
